Player suspensions....who "reduces" them...? (1 Viewer)

We have seen that many suspensions end up getting reduced. Who decides this and what is the process? Obviously the player and his reps appeal it and state their case, but to who? Is there a committee or something that can basically overrule the commish's office? And if so, who is on this committee?

I think Emperor Goodell likes to set a suspension, have players have to come to his office, crawl across the carpet, grovel, kiss his ring, and then he reduces it by a game or two.

Big power tripping joke if you ask me.

Set a suspension that's consistent across cases and be done with it.

ETA: But I really don't know anything about it. Just my visceral response to the whole inconsistent suspension subject.

This is exactly how I'd do it if I were him.

How would that be broken down? You get arrested for ANYTHING and you get 4 games?

A felony = X games? A misdemeanor = Y?

People are going to find something to complain about no matter the structure. And somebody is always going to think it's unfair.

I do believe a different means of appeal should be in place, though. Appealing to the same person who handed down the suspension is process for the sake of process and nothing more.

"No, no, no, no. I strenuously object."

It's like here, really. My GB Bob Sacamano got the boot for using wholly PG-rated words you'd be likely to hear in any grade school health class, despite the fact that the stated standard here is to maintain a PG environment. But the boss gets what the boss wants, and he's that right until somebody takes it away from him. I fully expect the union to push him to the point that he loses control of the appeal process, but it'll become a bargaining chip, no doubt.

I guess the one that gnaws at me is Matt Jones getting 3 games for snorting coke sitting in a car out in public where any cop could wander up and catch him and arrest him. Some other poor schlep tests positive for pot and gets 4 games. Why doesn't Jones get 4 games for the coke and at least another 4 for being so damn stupid and doing it out in public?

What's the greater show of stupidity: Doing coke in public where you may or may not get caught or smoking the pot at a point in the year when you KNOW there's a good chance you're going to have to pee in a cup? This authority is granted completely separately from the drug testing program. Apples and enemas, really.

I guess that it what I was getting at....if it's the same dude hearing the appeal.....what changes from the first time to the second time....why is it all of a sudden not as bad when they met with you the first time....

waste of money/time,etc....what's the point..?

What's the point? Ask Jared Allen. He had his reduced 2 games.Goodell tells them what they need to do to come back in harmony with the league. If they do those things they get suspensions reduced.

so again I ask....whats the point.....why not give them the suspension which includes what they need to do to "come back in harmony with the league" and just leave it at that....?...then you would only need to meet again if you need to increase the suspension for any further issues that come up.....
