Players who wear #1 (1 Viewer)

Players who chose to wear the #1. Sign of an alpha or total “look at me” move?

Did you ever wear #1? Would you? Why? Why not?

I wore #1 in hs and college. I was a little Coqy.... but i was pretty good too.

You chose number 1 or it was assigned?

chose it

So because you were good or because you wanted to be silly?

Did you feel like it brought more attention? Was it positive, negative, a little bit of both?

Did it make you a target and did you invite that?

The last question above is why I chose it (when #22 wasn’t available) I wanted to be the target/heel and attract people who would be fiery and emotional to compete against. It also puts some added pressure on them. I operate best when under extreme pressure so it was nothing to me.

I want all the smoke

It’s funny because I am not really a “look at me” type of guy.

I was a center midfielder, and I think it brought a little attention, but not a dramatic amount. I liked that because I was a high assist guy, so when dodging, I wanted to draw the 2nd and 3rd slide to hit my open teammates.

Isn’t #10 a thing with you footy guys? Or is that a recent trend?

My HS football number was #1.

It was assigned to me my Freshman year. I wanted to change it my sophomore year when I was on the JV/Varsity squad, but my best friend (was the QB in my class) talked me into keeping it.

I'm sure some people thought I was cocky, but it wasn't a "look at me" move at all...just sort of happened.

It ended up being retired about 10 years after I graduated when my school had a 3x all-state kicker that wore #1.
I tell my kids I had my number retired in HS.

I believe 10 and 9 are the playmakers in soccer. I played Lacrosse.

Lacrosse is such a great sport. I wish I played. Even though I was born and raised in Maryland, I didn’t watch a single game or pick up a stick until after HS.

 mecca.

the summer after my freshman year in college, one of my hs teammates and coach represented the west coast in the allstar game (played at Hopkins). I was in NY with another good friend at the time. we went to watch the game... so fun. also met the gate brothers at that event (syracuse).

My buddy at work played at a pretty high level in Rhode Island. He told me he came to Maryland for a tournament and knew his playing days were over. Great guy and good athlete too. He just said the dudes here were “different”.

In soccer, #10 is a revered number for certain clubs or countries - typically a quarterback type playmaking role - not a recent thing at all, goes way back. The jersey #1 in soccer is always a goalkeeper. There are exceptions, but a team's starting goalkeeper almost always wears #1. Many positions or roles in soccer are associated with a certain specific jersey number, but its not a rule (like linemen in football).

In rugby, every player wears a specific number according to his position, but it gets a bit confused during the games as substitutions come and go. The #1 in rugby will always play loosehead prop.

Never considered wearing 1 a look at me in baseball.... 69 in beer league yes. 1 in baseball no shrug

I wore #8

For Cal?

Aren’t you a basketball guy too?
Honestly I don't recall why I chose 8 but it was my number from like 10 years old into post college. I wore 10 for bball. Was goalie for soccer I don't recall having an actual number
The equipment guy told Roy Hobbs that #8 was unlucky.

its often a goalie's number, and goalies are generally a little cockier and stranger than most other players

Ja'Marr Chase is the legit ****. Other than that, I never think of "1" as it was exactly like Don Quixote described on our youth teams. Smallest jersey was #1. That or the goalie's number. Nobody really wore it on the field unless they were tiny.

I actually broke a serious hockey rule by wearing #99 as an adult in a reasonably competitive area/league. I loved doing it. Total LAM move. Put such a bullseye on my back that I knew I needed to be that much better.

I used to be an *******, too.

I have never really thought of a number as being anything as a statement. The only exceptions would be #10 in soccer (Pele) and #99 in hockey (Gretzky). Those two numbers are so indelible to the players that they should almost be retired in their sports.

I have never thought of a number by itself as having any meaning just certain sports/player combo like the two I listed. I find it weird that #1 is thought of as anything because it doesn't have a player associated with it to give it a meaning.

I feel like growing up on a lot of my teams, there wasn't a #1 jersey to even choose from. Coaches may have wanted to avoid that mentality. I never would have volunteered for it anyway. I liked the number 3 so it was almost always 3 or 13 for me.
