Players you are targeting in every draft (1 Viewer)

Tempest

Footballguy
Who are some of the players you want to get in every draft no matter what price tag they carry. These can be your sleepers or established players that you are sure will have prominent role and very good stats at the end of year. In other words, your favourite players for this season.

Here are some of my targets:

QB
Matt Ryan
Russell Wilson

RB
Andre Ellington
Devonta Freeman

WR
Michael Floyd
Cody Latimer
Cordarrelle Patterson

TE
Heath Miller

My dream was to come out of drafts with a healthy dose of Montee Ball, Andre Ellington, and Michael Crabtree after the first five rounds, together with two guys who are just acknowledged studs.

It worked out in 4 out of 5 drafts, the only outlier being the one where I drafted too early and Montee fell before it came back to me. I've been reaching on Ellington and Crabtree because I think they both have 1st/2nd round production this year.

Since the guys I loved the values on were so far toward the top this year, I'm either going to be very, very happy or very, very doomed by their performances.

Others of note: Patriot D, Steeler D, Kenny Britt, MJD, Heath Miller, and Colston all found their way onto multiple rosters for me. But Montee, Ellington, and Crabtree are the Plant Your Flag guys for me this season. (Apologies to Matthew Berry.)

I, too, have been targeting Latimer as a last pick sleeper. Other than him I've subconsciously targeted Foles, Joique Bell, Fred Jackson, and Gronk/Cameron in nearly all my leagues. I love grabbing a stud TE, for the consistant point advantage each week. IMO it's super valuable. ( especially when you have the TE only slots in your league)

Interested to see others, cool post.

Pierre Thomas in PPR

I see myself taking Romo/Cutler as my QB, like the offense style and stud receiver options.

Locked up Cameron, take him over Gronk. Especially if Johnny Fussball takes over, rookie QBs typically use their TE often.

I can almost always get Bryant as my kicker. Lot of shootouts, and questionable red zone efficiency for Atl.

Harvin

Seattle's staff thinks really highly of Harvin, they traded away 1st rounder for him and they crafted the gameplan in the New Orleans playoff game around him despite him not playing all season He's as good of a receiver as anyone in the league. He was elite with Christian Ponder and the imaginative offense Minnesota ran in 2012.

Wilson has shown he's a great QB when asked to throw, Seattle's defense probably takes a step back from last year, and Bevell and co are looking for ways to get the ball into Harvin's hands.

The injuries are a concern, but he's a top 5 WR when healthy and you can just grab Doug Baldwin later to have a respectable WR3 maybe WR2 when Harvin is out.

Boldin

SF probably has to throw a lot more because of the defense taking a step back. Much is made of Crabtree as Kaep's #1, but Boldin saw a similar amount of targets in the playoffs (more in 2 of the 3 games.)

Ben Tate

Was as good, if not better, than Arian Foster the past 3 seasons in Houston. Shannahan wants to run, the defense is good enough to keep games close, the staff probably doesn't trust either QB in the red zone, and when Manzeil takes over a running QB is great for a running back. Tate is pretty much in the same spot as Alfred Morris last year except that he's a much better pass catcher.

All of my drafts I've had earlier picks (#2,3,4) this year, so I've gone stud RB then targeted these guys with success:

TE:

Gronk smash

Heath Miller

Late RB:

Mark Ingram

Knile Davis

Value WR:

Roddy White

Andre Johnson

I keep ending up with RG3. Not targeting him, and frankly, don't even like him that much. But he's taken a literal and figurative beating this preseason. It feels like it's gone a bit too far.

I really like these guys--I target them in all my drafts and I usually end up with at least some of them:

Roddy white--no tony gonzalez, a bit of a sketchy running game, and Julio occupying the opponents best defender should open things up for him

Jeremy Maclin--if he can stay healthy I see a big year from him. A dynamic offense that lost desean jackson. I don't see chip kelly suddenly turning to a run heavy offense. I see Maclin picking up much of the production that desean provided last season--which was a fantasy treasure trove.

Tony Romo-- I can see him putting up video game passing numbers on a train wreck team. Plays in a division with other high scoring teams that don't have elite defenses--so I see lots of shootouts. He very easily could be the 4th-6th best qb in fantasy football this year.

Fred Jackson--I love his value for his ADP. Seems like buffalo just doesnt know how or doesn't want to use spiller in a way that maximizes his strengths. Just seems like there could be solid rb2/flex value here that can be got for cheap

Jonathan Stewart--carolina has a real lack of wr's--I like benjamin--and olsen is solid--but i don't see any reason for them not to go run heavy. Deangelo has not done anything in the preseason to lead me to believe that he's the guy to own in carolina. JStew on the other hand looks like the better runner to me. He's also a bit fresher as he's missed lots of time the last couple of seasons due to injury--so if he can manage to stay healthy--I think he could be a solid steal where he's at.

Kyle rudolph-- Sure--he's not going for cheap--but I don't see any reason why he can't finish the season as the 4th best te in football. After graham, gronk, and julius--I would put rudolph right there in that Jordan Cameron range. The beauty of rudolph is that his offense has patterson and AP--guys that other defenses cannot ignore. I see rudolph being a major red zone threat--and by default--I don't see teams being able to focus on stopping him like they can on Cameron.

Terrance Williams--primarily the same reasons why I like romo. I see this team playing in lots of shootouts--and playing from behind a lot. I can see opponents really focusing in on dez and this could open things up for terrance (especially with witten and demarco occupying some defenders)

Knile Davis--if Jamaal were to get hurt-which is a distinct possibility..keep in mind we are looking at jamaal who will have a very heavy workload behind an OL that is not super strong. Knile has an awesome skill set and would be an immediate rb1 if Jamaal would miss some time. I see some major potential here.

Dwayne Bowe-- KC's defense dropped off the latter half of last season into the playoffs. I don't see their defense as being so elite that they can almost abandon their passing game. The fantasy world has pretty much given up on bowe and I just see a risk/reward draft pick that makes sense here. We are looking at a guy that could be the primary wr on an average to above average team--that is getting drafted at wr4-wr5 territory. He certainly has bust potential--but even if he does bust--it's not the roll of the dice on him costs that much.

There are some more that I like, but that's just a few to start with.

Moreno, miller has been given every chance to succeed and failed. He stays healthy he plays way more than miller and think he a is a stay rb2 in that lazer offense.

Somehow managed to grab Ridley in all 3 of my big money drafts. Absolutely hate his prospects as a RB but he kept ending up on my squad after falling a couple rounds past where I thought he should be taken.

He may surprise me.

Gronk + Julio + Foster in a lot of drafts that I got the later pick

Cutler + Kaep + Romo + Matt Ryan since I like to wait for QBs this year

Andre Johnson + Percy Harvin + Roddy White....all these 3 are available in the 3-5 rounds

Eric Decker - always there in the 7th and sometimes 8th round. The dude caught 10+ TDs with freaking Tim Tebow throwing the ball (and Demaryus Thomas was injured that year so he had double coverage/best CB every game).....there is no one who can catch the ball with the Jets and Geno had some decent games last year....he will get the rock to Eric a lot....as a WR3/4 he is money in the bank

Ray Rice in the 5th round; Ben Tate in the 6th round; Steven Jackson in the 8th/9th round and Jon Stewart in the 15+ rounds.....great value plays on players that are proven and are falling but you can get them as RB2/3/4 and reap great rewards

Target might be the wrong term, but here's the guys I keep getting likely because I'm valuing them higher than others are:

Matt Stafford

Chris Johnson

Emmanuel Sanders

Kenny Britt

Zach Ertz

Matt Prater (before he was suspended)

Broncos DST

ETA: Ertz, Prater detail

In PPR:

Seems like I have Woodhead and Dexter McCluster on everyone one of my teams this year. Love the value on both of them. Woodhead in the 8th round, McCluster with one of my last picks. Woody is in line to rack up another 70+ receptions, and McCluster 50+ if he is used in the same role in Wisenhunt's offense in Tennessee.

As stated above these are more players I seem to get as I value more than their ADP

Alex Smith

Ellington

Foster

Bradshaw

Andre Johnson

Roddy

Reed

Rams

Based on my actions, Julio + Gronk + Harvin + T Williams + Wilson + Hyde + Sproles + Latimer + Freeman + L Green + Kelce + M Lee. Variables seem to be rb, wr2/3, and my other qb. Vereen or Gore seem to be a common theme though.

Hope to get Graham in my last one, willing to reach, just haven't been in the right spot to get him.

Larry Fitzgerald -- ADP 4.04/WR16. Year 2 in a pass happy offense. Really wouldn't be surprised if AZ leads the league in pass attempts after finishing 17th a year ago. Difficult schedule + a defense that's lost significant pieces this offseason (Dansby + Washington + Dockett). Best thing to happen to Fitz is the emergence of John Brown who gives them a legitimate downfield speed threat to really open things up. Something the Cardinals desperately desperately needed. Fitz is going to be in the slot A LOT and he's going to be single covered due to the Floyd/Jo.Brown. I have Fitz down for 90 receptions. Really wouldn't surprise if it neared 100. He's going to be amongst the most targeted WR's in the game this year. Expect him to be back up in the 150-160 target range. I expect his slot usage to increase from the 48% (PFF) from last year. My guess would be close to the 60% figure that Arians gave for John Brown's usage. It's a spot that's produced a 95 catch year from a 33 year old Hines Ward and 106 catch year from a 33-34 year old Reggie Wayne. Offense made great strides 2nd half of last year in Arians's 1st year. Expect them to be even better in Year 2. And don't be surprised if Palmer's sets another career high in pass yardage this year. Have him finishing as a WR1.

Emmanuel Sanders -- Have him ranked WR17 (going as WR25/5.09 by recent ADP). Going to be an every down WR. With 3 concussions in last 10 games, I expect them to scale back Welker's load even more. He's a perfect fit in a timing based offense.

Colston -- ADP 6.10/WR29. Really don't see him putting up much different #s than the guys drafted Round 4. I prefer him to all the WRs that get taken late Round 4/early Round 5. After he returned from injury last year, he was a high WR2 by PPG. If healthy this year, I really don't expect much difference from that.

Fred Jackson -- ADP 9.05/RB35. Completely ok with him leading an RB2 committee. Nothing's changed. Goalline + 3rd down back. Where do I sign up?

Kelvin Benjamin -- ADP has now risen to 8.07. Even so, it is very very difficult for me to see him not reaching 70+/850+/8+ TD and finishing in that mid-low WR2 range. Cam literally does not look at any other WR on the roster. A guy IMO that is likely to help win a lot of leagues this year if healthy.

Aaron Dobson -- ADP 14.02. Likely being eased in first couple weeks, but easily NE's most gifted WR. Perfect bye week WR (IF no setbacks, should be back to near every down WR when they do roll around)

Mohammed Sanu -- ADP 19.05. Should be no worse than a WR4 while Jones is out. (And I believe there's quite a good chance it's beyond the targetted Week 5 bye). Reports very good this offseason. And he's looked very good on the field this preseason. Like Dobson, Sanu would be a nice bye week fill in if Jones does happen to be out longer than expected.

The 2 guys on most of my teams are Jordan Matthews and Joquie Bell. Also have Randle and Cooks on a couple. Those 4 offer good value for where they are going in drafts. Bell, IMO, could easily be the #1 RB in Detroit this year and is always going after Reggie Bush. I grabbed Joquie in the 5th, 5th and 6th of my drafts I have him in.

Matthews has late round appeal just because of the Eagles' offense. With only Maclin and Cooper ahead of him, he definitely has a chance for early PT. Nothing but good reviews of him from OTAs and TC, so I think he'll surpass his value. Was able to get him after the 10th in every draft.

Randle could certainly be a worthy WR3 this season. Was able to nab him in the 9th in both leagues I have him in. Cooks plays in a high power offense and will get looks with Sproles gone in NO. Maybe not right away, but Cooks is definitely not a bad WR4 to own.

I have been targeting

1) at RB, Fred Jackson and Pierre Thomas......both nice RB3 or RB4s to have at their prices

2) at WR, Mike Wallace, Jarrett Boykin and Harry Douglas. Wallace has a reasonable price tag and is a great WR3 to have....one who can have a huge game due to his big play ability. Boykin and Douglas will hold bye week WR3 value and their value skyrockets if one of the GB/ATL starters goes down.

3) at QB, RGIII. His ADP has fallen a lot, and is an injury risk, but at QB11 or QB12, his upside is high. Just make sure you draft an Andy Dalton or Ben Roethlisberger as your backup.

Not sure it was on purpose, but I ended up with Gronk in 3/4 drafts. Just seemed everyone else kept letting him fall to the point of decent value for me.

In the same boat. Have him in two leagues and really wishing I didn't. But he should play way better than he did in the preseason. With all that talent on offense he can't be that bad.

Man, am I glad you're not in any of my leagues. Apart from T-Will and Freeman, I own every name on your list in multiple leagues. And, true to a prediction I made in another thread last month, Gronk and Harvin have been my back-to-back 3rd and 4th rounders in every one of my four drafts (including FBG's MBSL survivor league).

I haven't seen Cam Newton's name mentioned - while I haven't been targeting him, he's fallen to me in every 4-pt pass TD / 6-pt rush TD league, usually at QB11 or QB12. There's virtually no chance he doesn't outperform that ADP if he plays a full 16 games.

Think RG3 will stil be fine this year. I wasn't targeting him in one league, but QBs went quick and he was the 13th taken. I couldn't pass up that kind of value on him. He has the potential to be a top 5 QB. We've all seen him do it before. The offensive fire power is there for him to succeed. I wouldn't guarantee him a top 5 finish, but top 10 is certainly doable.
