playoff tiebreakers (1 Viewer)

the CBS "guru's" have been talking about this a bit the past couple weeks and it seems to be their discussion topic of the month. so i wanted your opinions since theirs have been limited to high seed wins and bench scoring.

i understand there really are not alot of other options to decide these matchups but i am sure there are more than a few unique ideas here in the shark pool to decide playoff tiebreakers.

i personally feel that bench scoring is about a stupid as any argument for a tiebreaker ... why would you ever be judged on players you aren't starting? it is fair to say that people would make different choices on which players to have on their bench if they knew it was a tiebreaker

i think highest seed is definitely a fair and valid argument since it puts emphasis on the season and who was the better team up to that point

for me, the best tiebreaker is to judge something in your starting lineup that your scoring system may not judge ... maybe your defensive scoring stops short of judging a defense on net yards allowed or points given up? whatever gets decided, though, it should decided ahead of time and it should not be based on bench players

In my league I require each playoff team submit 2 additional bench players or team defenses (on the league message board for all to see) whose bench score will be used in conjunction with our tiebreaker rules. This way it is not some random bench player. Each team needs to designate, in advance, which players they want to be considered in case of a tie. If they do not designate any bench players and their opponent does, they will lose. Our tiebreaker rules are such:

* 1st - The two (2) additional players or team defenses will be totaled for an overtime score, highest total determines winner.

* 2nd - If the playoff teams still remain tied, the highest individual score of all four (4) tiebreak players determines winner.

* 3rd - If the playoff teams still remain tied, the team with the best overall regular season record - not necessarily the higher seed - will win.

I do not rely on CBS to handle our playoff tiebreakers. I make the adjustment after going through this process. I have never had to do this in 8 years. In fact, in 8 years we've only ever had two regular season games end in a tie. (2 of 630 total games.)

Wow seeing this post is too funny. I'm currently in the middle of a rather huge disagreement in a CBS league. Casual work league (wifes) so nobody went crazy and picked apart the bylaws. First round of playoffs I tie with the team i'm playing. Only rules in place we have are "standings tiebreaker" in which winning pct is #1 criteria. I win on that. He says that shouldn't count and proceeds to nitpick our rules left and right (the ones that were sufficient all season) After more than a day of back and forth, it has been decided that a coin flip is the "fairest" solution. :lmao:

I hate bench scoring. I don't have a deep enough bench (only 6 slots vs. 8 starters). So it's full of RBs because I have studs at QB and WR. I'd hate to lose to a guy who'd been playing QBBC all year, made the "wrong" choice for the week but won anyway because his backup went off.

In the divisional playoff rounds, we use top active scorer (so if your best guy got 25 points and his got 19 you'd win), which isn't that great either, but it suffices. We only do that for one player, if there's still a tie (25 & 25), win goes to the higher seed.

In the championship, since seeding came from different divisions, we just use top scorer, then next, then next, etc. until we go through the whole lineup. If all the guys score exactly the same, split it.

I kind of like a non-standard scoring element, especially defensive... kick return yardage, fewer first downs, or sometimes kicker related (longest FG if you don't already do bonuses).

I've always used the following:

1. TOTAL TD'S scored by starting roster

2. TOTAL YARDS of starting roster

3. Highest scoring DEFENSE

4. Highest scoring QB

5. Highest scoring RB

6. Highest scoring WR

7. Virtual coin flip

In 15+ years, I've never had to go past #2.

I don't use this but an interesting alternative would be turnovers.

Team with fewer Interceptions and fumbles wins.

I've always used the following:1. TOTAL TD'S scored by starting roster 2. TOTAL YARDS of starting roster 3. Highest scoring DEFENSE4. Highest scoring QB5. Highest scoring RB6. Highest scoring WR7. Virtual coin flip In 15+ years, I've never had to go past #2.
mine is similar to the above:- Total # of TD's scored by that week's Lineup (including DEF)- Total # of Yards gained (QB, RB's, WR's, TE)- Total # of FG's scored- Longest FG- Coin Toss

We submit 2 players for tiebreakers from our bench.

Then TD"s scored by starters.

Then Points on Bench

The Coin Flip

decimal system all but eliminates ties..haven't had a tie this year with playing 2 games a week. In case it does happen, our rule is highest seed advances.

Our league does a combination of 2 things mentioned in this thread:

1) Total TD's in starting lineup is the 1st tiebreaker

2) Highest individual score in starting lineup (whoever has the highest scorer between the 2 teams wins)

3) If it's still tied, it continues to 2nd highest scorer in starting lineup, 3rd highest, etc til a winner is declared

The reason I don't like requiring owners to post their tiebreaker selections is because it's easy to forget, and it seems like there's always one guy who does. Having it automatically be the highest scorer in a lineup makes more sense, IMO.

thanks for the advice. i have been playing fantasy football for 8 years and i have not seen a tie, much less in a game that mattered. scoring with decimals helps put an end to this before it starts.

it is just a good idea to plan this stuff ahead and have it in your back pocket in case you actually need it, you don't want to be unprepared.

i like the idea of breaking things up by best scorer, and i like the idea of most TDs. it will be easy enough to put it up to a league vote for the #1 tiebreaker or which one is the best.

i just did not like having my options being: sacrifice bench integrity, or having a season depend on bad bye weeks.

great work as always, and again thank you.

Our league uses decimal scoring so hopefully we won't have a tie in the playoffs but in case we do we resolve it this way...

Create a second playoff scenario. All prize money is halved. One of the tie teams advances in the first playoff scenario and the other team advances in the second. If a different team comes out on top then you have co-champs and the first place prize money is split. You could have a team that comes in first in one scenario and second in the other. They would get (1st place money / 2) + (2nd place money / 2). The best the two tie teams could get his 1/2 of the first place money.
