Please explain Matt Millen to me.. (1 Viewer)

Fair & Balanced
When Millen came to Detroit he promised to build a franchise somewhat in the mold of the Steelers..a pounding run game, great defensive play.

First thing he does is fire Gary Moeller a smashmouth coach who the players loved and took a crappy team to a 9-7 record and a 53 yard FG by the Bears knocked them out of the playoffs....then hires a soft WCO guy in MM, fires him brings in another soft coach in Mooch, then brings in a hard ### in Marinelli..except the hard ### has to deal with 4 out of 5 drafts with WRs as #1, I love CJ..but we were getting production out of Furrey..and now McDonald..then we bring in Mike Martz..who is great for FF teams, now we throw 40-50 times a game, have a soft defense, and unless KJ gets back a weak running game and really no direction as a team.

Some fool will probably hire Martz as a head coach and the Lions will have to rebuild again. This team has no idendity.

You don't draft Wr's and then play smashmouth. The decision to keep drafting Wr's means you have to throw the ball on offense and showcase your talents. If he was going to do otherwise, he'd have drafted big linemen on offense and defense.BTW.....you know he really doesn't know what he is doing. At best he's learning as he goes....but I think it's in very small increments.

If only a fool could be so lucky. Imagine the Lions without Martz - you'd have a lousy defense *and* a lousy offense. Millen needs to quit firing coaches, which then requires major overhauls of personnel to fit new schemes.

The offense is not the problem... it's the defense
:( Most of the time, when you have a struggling team...this is the case. The Lions are actually getting by with a bad defense and flashy offense. The game was nearly 42-28 at halftime. It's amazing that you can allow 42 points in the first half and still have a shot to win (until the Eagles buried them in the second half, of course).

The problem is the Lions have paid and are still paying 4 WRs first rd money on the cap.Rogers a #3 overall, and BMW a #11 overall

Can't explain him, he shouldn't have a GM job, but he does.

Bad thing is the Lions may have a 7-9 year and he will keep his job.

:rant:The big problem for the Lions is that they haven't been able to stock the defense with Cover 2 personnel because they've been too busy stocking the offense with Martz personnel. The current coaching staff is doing well with what they have to work with. Hell, this is probably the best Lions team of the Millen era.The Lions are only a few players away from really having something, but they won't be able to get them because Millen manages the cap so poorly. There are way too many overpaid players on the roster.

I wouldn't be complaining just yet. The Lions aren't a great team, but they're good enough to beat everyone in their division and they're better than they were 2-3 years ago. I think they're slowly headed in the right direction. They will need to find a QB of the future though.

Or the Lions may have a 2-14 year and he will keep his job.
