I'm headed to China tomorrow morning, I will be there all week (I will be observing Labor day once I get back).  I want to take up a good book to keep me entertained while not at the factory.  I have a Kindle Fire, so I'm looking for suggestions available there.

I'm not much of a reader - haven't sat down and read a whole book in forever.  Anyone got any suggestions for new stuff?

Millions of books to choose from but since you're going to China and aren't a big reader, I'd recommend Night Heron by Adam Brookes.  It's a spy novel set in modern China that manages to avoid most of the cliches of the genre.  Brookes was a BBC correspondent in China and creates a believable (to me) setting that might make you paranoid about the guy who seemed to be looking at you in the hotel lobby yesterday morning.

I used to buy dozens of books and audiobooks a year on Amazon for my Kindle. Then I found out my local library offers tons of  e & audio books for free and I can load them onto my Kindle.

Please allow me to humbly recommend HOSTILE TAKEOVER    :headbang:

Suspense thriller. A former corporate raider and his wife enter an exclusive rehabilitation facility in the desert of New Mexico. Quiet. Isolated. Miles from civilization. But when participants in the program start dying...I'll leave the rest for you to read.

Full disclosure...I wrote it. :bye:

Left the world of corporate finance last year to do some dream chasing. Fortunately, reviews have been great (phew!).

Flattered to have received the following from Anne Hillerman (New York Times bestselling author who actually lives in New Mexico where the book takes place): "Derek Blount knows how to build tension with the best of contemporary thriller authors. His storytelling is rich with essential details, but the descriptions never overshadow the action."

And also received this review from humorist Anne Taintor:popcorn:

Anyway, it's available on Kindle or good old-fashioned paper

If you want to test drive the writing (before investing your hard-earned $3.99), feel free to check out this story published in MENSA Magazine last year or this short story which won an award earlier in 2016. [And don't let the Mensa thing fool you, my writing is pretty much on a seventh-grade level...you'll be fine.]

Most importantly, remember that by purchasing Hostile Takeover, my children will be able to eat for one more day. No pressure.  :P

And if you do buy it (and read it), then thank you!  :thanks:

Have a great trip!

Bought it.  If it sucks you're refunding my $4.00 (the extra $.01 for my trouble)!

I've done those long tired flights.  If you want something interesting, but not too heavy, non-fiction, I reco:

The Wright Bros by David McCullough

Devotion by Adam Makos

Both come highly rated on Amazon for a reason.

If you want something light, I recently read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.  It was a fun read and not too deep.  Spielberg is making a movie out of it.

https://www.amazon.com/Ready-Player-One-Ernest-Cline/dp/0307887448/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472859463&sr=8-1&keywords=ready+player+one
this is good to know.  I think I'd like to read a book that they eventually make a movie out of so once the movie comes out, I can be pretentious about it and talk about how I hope the movie captures this and that... and explain to my wife what is going on for a change.

The book sucks.  Pass.

Go with Sconch's recommendation.

Plato's Dialogues.

Two volume The Open Society and its Enemies by Karl Popper is also some light, casual reading.

Added to my Amazon list.

Ready Player One was a great little read that brought back lots of good memories for us older dudes.  I wholeheartedly disagree with your "the book sucks" comment.
I would vote Shuke's way on this one too.  Should have been in my wheelhouse, but I could barely get though through the book.

My sentiments exactly.  I spent plenty of time in arcades in the 80's and I love futuristic fiction.  I couldn't wait to read this book.

Thanks for the pick up @Mr. Ected. Hope you enjoy Hostile Takeover:thanks:

The answer to your question about Kindle Unlimited is "kinda".

The way the Kindle Unlimited program works (for authors) is that all books included in the program are lumped in a giant pool. Amazon then tracks the number of "normalized pages" read for each book and figures out each author's % of the total page count. For instance, if the total pages read in the giant pool of books was 100,000 pages and my books had 3,000 pages read that month, then I'd have 3% of the total pool...though the total pages are astronomically larger than that (and my actual percentage of that number is microscopic).  :nerd:

Each month, the "Global Royalty Fund" for Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners Lending Library is assigned a certain dollar amount (in July 2016 it was about $15 million). The fund is paid out to each participating author based on the % of total pages read. Numbers aren't published but say Stephen King accounted for 1% of total pages read, then he earned $150,000 for the month of July. Good for him.

How much do I earn out of that big ol' global royalty fund? Well, I went to a sandwich shop for lunch today.  My total July earnings from the fund probably covered my iced tea.  :headbang:

So it's naturally better for any author when his/her books is purchased directly (on Kindle or paperback). HOWEVER, there's a very valid reason to participate in the Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Library programs (particularly for a never-heard-of-this-guy author like me). Exposure. My hope is that you read the book for "free" through that program, then hopefully: (1) tell your friends about the book, or maybe (2) write a positive review on Amazon or Goodreads, or ideally (3) buy another one of my books in the future. Any of those things make the program worth it.

More than you ever wanted to know about how all this stuff works.

But seriously, thank you for picking up the book and I really hope you enjoy it (let me know what you think!).

And thank you @moleculo and @James Daulton and @ditka311 too!! Much appreciated!!   :thanks:   :hifive: :thanks:

Hope you find Hostile Takeover worth your time and hard-earned $3.99!  :coffee:

OK, thanks for the explanation. So if I don't like it, I should flip thru all of the pages so you get credit for a whole read?

I have started it and am just a little bit in. (slow reader - usually read a chapter or two before falling asleep at nite) It's very good so far, will post more as I get in!
