Police: Thief Stole 86 Lb. Bucket of Gold Flakes Worth $1.6M (1 Viewer)

Police in New York City are looking for a quick-thinking thief who stole an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes worth nearly $1.6 million off an armored truck in Manhattan.

The unidentified thief swiped the 5-gallon metal bucket off the back of the vehicle on Sept. 29 when a guard briefly went to the truck's cab to reportedly retrieve his cellphone.

The incident occurred in broad daylight on West 48th Street in New York City's Midtown section. Police say the suspect likely didn't know what the bucket contained.

Police say the thief lugged the gold flakes up the street, taking an hour to complete what would normally be considered a 10-minute walk. He then hopped into a white van and fled.

The suspect is believed to be hiding out in Florida.

Video.

This guy better turn himself in or leave the country immediately or they are going to find him dead and without that bucket.

This is all sorts of crazy. I mean, who just grabs a giant bucket off the back of a security truck? And once he realized it weighted 86lbs, why in the world would he keep going with it if he didn't know what was in it? And when he finally opened it, did he become elated, or did he crap bricks when he realized that he stole a ridiculous amount of gold?

What can he do with it?  Can he melt it down to bricks?  Can he sell it easily?  Teach me your flim flam ways

The video is pretty awesome.  It's like the guy had been practicing stealing 24 packs of Busch Light off beer trucks and decided to try his hand at stealing off a Brinks truck.  Run Forrest!!!

Assuming that he doesn't get filmed by 18 cameras this is pretty untraceable.  Drive to Colorado and sell small amounts.  Melt it down, sell it locally.

Gold is pretty darn easy to get rid of.  I'd probably generate a sand cast of an ingot and melt it (just because it started out as flakes).  Probably easier to sell as flakes, though.

5 gallon buckets are pretty standard, but one weighing 86 lbs would surprise you.   I would guess a bucket taken out of a armored vehicle  has something valuable in it. Could have been someone with inside info.
I would have thought it was full of pennies.
