I give a bit here and there. In a few cases it's because I like the candidate. In most cases it is in opposition to the other guy.

I've only donated to 3 campaigns.

1 because I believed the candidate represented a good direction for the future of the party.

1 because I believed the candidate was a good person who had good sense and would lead well.

1 because I felt Andy D. is a solid poster on these boards and has good ideas that would serve his constituents well.

I don't care enough and have never been close enough to a campaign.

Plus, where I live, there is rarely an election where individual votes matter.

It's hard to say why I won't donate.

I have volunteered on several campaigns, Dem & Rep, and I think if someone believes in a cause or candidate or that the race is important, this is far better.

But I really don't donate I think because I have seen too, too many candidates up close and have seen that they have clay feet, they always disappoint as individuals. I also believe that no candidate ever 100% represents my views, so I much more feel that every issue and stand should be supported or opposed, not the man or woman.

My reason for not giving is that I so pessimistic about our system that I think no matter who they are before they get elected, they won't be that person 6 weeks into holding office. Whether they are lying about who they are to get elected, or whether they change afterwards doesn't really matter to me.

Gary Johnson

whoever is running against Michele Bachmann

I might give to Wendy Davis depending on the level of Greg Abbot's bat-####-craziness

If you answered yes and didnt vote number 5, you're probably a little nutty.
I don't know about that. I've had two instances where I have donated to a campaign. One was a friend of mine and another was a friend of the my parents. I supported them and donated.

My wife, however, donates every year to a couple of PACs in her industry. She earns a fair performance bonus annually and her contributions come from the bonus. She's never donated to a party or campaign.

I have given money to Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union. With the exception of a close friend of mine who ran for city council, I have never contributed to a political candidate.

Huge waste of money IMO

1) They may lose

2) The money you donate probably makes no difference, unless it's $50K+

3) They may not govern how you want, may be ineffective in office, or not be much different than the alternative

Just can't put my money behind something with that many risks of no benefit. I'd rather give it to charity.

Other: I am not a wealthy man, and I don't have a lot of disposable income to give away. If I were to give money to a politician, it would have to come from causes I believe in much more than politics.

Did any of that work out for ya?

Hell no. They can all suck it.
Exactly.

Potential candidate for a house seat stands in the building and says 'I want to do the right thing', Passer by, who works there, says 'you are in the wrong building' - True story.

Corporations and special interests give to campaigns because it buys them influence. Outside of that scope, contributing is a waste of money in the current system. For individuals, it's the equivalent of throwing cash in the fireplace.

And there you have it.

I will add that rather than bandying about campaign limits in arguments, and we can all say what we think is a right limit for people and corporations, it would be far more effective if the government actually prosecuted for quid pro quo more.

We all say that money buys influence, Demo, Repub, president, Congressmen, local officials, you name it, but in reality if a politician allows campaign financing to buy influence , that is against the law. It's a crime. We've all gotten used to it but it is a crime.

I agree. If you have a cause you are better off giving the money to a special interest group that lobbies for that cause.

Unless, of course, you have enough money to buy influence directly.

Agreed, but the shark move for personal gain is to not donate during the campaign, then use the money you would've donated to bribe whomever wins. Cuts out the uncertainty.

Andy lost. :kicksrock: You'd have to ask him if it helped at all.

I do donate. 80+% of my donations go to races at the city or district level where I usually know the candidates personally.

Generally I donate to causes, not to candidates or to a party. When I have donated to a candidate it is because I have a personal relationship with them.
