I like:

John Edwards 30-1 BET

Bill Richardson 50-1 BET

George Allen Jr 7-1 BET

George Pataki 75-1 BET

Mitt Romney 25-1 BET

So where are the good names?
Certainly not under the democrat list...
Yes, and the Republicans chose such a winner last two elections. :lmao:
Sure did and look who is in the White House...
Wow, you must be the one guy who's actually still proud of that. :lmao:

John Edwards 30-1 BET

Bill Richardson 50-1 BET

Joe Biden 30-1 BET

Evan Bayh 35-1 BET

John McCain 8-1 BET

Mitt Romney 25-1 BET
I like the above bets. Edwards has a decent shot at the nomination. He has to improve as a candidate and broaden his message to win, but he's not a 30-1 underdog.

Richardson is way underpriced at 50-1. He's a stronger candidate than Edwards. He's a steal.

Biden would make for an excellent candidate if the Dems wanted to offer up a centrist with good national security bona fides. He's their best candidate, IMO, so I would be comfortable taking him at 30-1.

Bayh is another good centrist candidate, and he would probably do better on the campaign trail than Biden. My only reservation about Bayh is that he can come across as an empty suit at times. He's a little underpriced at 35-1.

McCain is going to win the presidency in 2008 IMO. A fair price would be something like 3-1, so I think he's a great bet at 8-1.

Romney is intriguing at 25-1. His Mormonism will cause a problem, but he's kind of like Bayh in the sense that he's done well in a state dominated by the other party, so he does have some electoral appeal.
It's not that the Republicans chose such a winner. It's that the Democrats picked such losers.

I think Romney, Pataki, and Giulianni would have to be the GOP favorites, no? Giuliani is a terrible bet at 10:1 to win it all though.

Geez, I really don't want a McCain/Clinton race.

Can I bet against Bill Clinton and W? Anyway, eliminating the noise, we come down to a much smaller list. I guess of these, I'd like to see George Allen face off against Bill Richardson.

The above are all sucker bets. (I'm ignoring people going off at more than 100-1). Hillary -- Not electable. Even the lefties on this board don't want her to win.

Daschle -- Dems don't like losers. No chance at the nomination.

Dean -- Hasn't gotten any saner or more electable since 2004.

Clark -- See Dean.

Allen -- How he's favored over McCain is a mystery to me.

Jeb Bush -- Anyone with "Bush" as their last name stands no chance of being elected in any of our lifetimes. Except possibly Reggie Bush, but he's not old enough to run this time around.

Rudy -- Too liberal to get the nomination.

Pataki -- Like Rudy, only without the personality and credentials.

Powell -- Please.

Cheney -- You've got to be kidding.

Frist -- Teri Schiavo would have voted for him, but most registered voters will not.

Ridge -- Very forgetable tenure at Homeland Security.

Gingrich -- I think he's the only person who thinks he has a chance.

Schumer -- Would get blown out in a national election. I'd probably lay every cent to my name against Schumer even at 75-1.

Couldn't you have said in 1968:Nixon -- Hasn't gotten any more personable or likeable since 1960?

That's true. I've just never seen either of these guys as serious candidates, though. Clark has no experience with government whatsoever and capably proved that he's poor on the campaign trail. Dean governed one of the smallest states in the nation for a while, and vaulted into notoriety only by bomb-throwing during the run-up to the primaries. Nixon had quite a bit of government experience, a clear nation profile as at least a serious person, and had almost beaten JFK in 1960 (as opposed to flaming out during the very first primary).

I understand your point, but I don't think either Clark or Dean compares well to Nixon. FWIW, this is why I'm not listing Kerry as a "sucker bet." Generally, Democrats have been brutally unforgiving to their losers, but I could see Kerry getting another shot.

I'm actually a big fan of Dean. I don't think he can win, but I very much support his role with the Democrats. I'm sick and tired of Bob Shrum's "0-fer" record.Dean's rhetoric is much more leftist than his actual positions, and as a doctor who both balanced budgets and provided child healthcare in his state (regardless of its size) I have to respect him.

But hey, he was never a mostly ceremonial figure in Texas politics that didn't even have veto power or the ability to appoint a cabinet beyond sec of state, so... :P

This prospect really scares me, though. In 2004, Kerry's campaign slogan was basically "I was in Vietnam." This got insufferable really fast, culminating in that laughable "Reporting for duty" line at the convention.

In 2008, Kerry's campaign slogan would probably be "I told you so." Like, every commerical of his would end with "I'm John Kerry, I paid for this ad so I could remind you that I told you so." His convention speech would open with "I told you so four years ago, but did you mother-####ers listen? NOOOOOO!!!!!"

I don't know which will be harder to sit through.

did IvanK just quote himself?
No.Actually, I just wanted to go off on a little Kerry riff, and since I saw you were posting, I didn't want to edit my earlier post to do so.

:lmao:
We might laugh now, but I could see a major GOP strategy in 2008 being that the Democrats were dwelling on the past and lack ideas to move forward. The GOP is a good four years into their "The Democrats have no ideas" mantra, even though the GOP's education and prescription drug plans sucked, and they have no idea what to do about Health Care. In fact, it's almost safe to say that under Bush, the GOP strategy has been to mess things up, and then mock the Dems for not knowing how to clean it up (see also: Iraq).

I was just trying to cute, but the GOP nominee is almost certainly going to appeal to this theme, especially if its somebody from outside the current administration (like McCain/Allen/Romney/Warner).The Democrats would love to make the 2008 election a referrendum on the Bush administration (understandable). The best way for the GOP to deflect that would be to try to frame the race as "Okay, here we are; how should we go forward from here?" That leads naturally into the more negative framing you mentioned.

Here.

Picking between Biden and McCain would be awesome. I think those are the two best guys from both parties.
