Keep Austin weird*

*well, you know, weird for Texas anyway, which means don’t wear khaki pants and a golf shirt today. Get weird!

Didn't know what it stood for exactly but knew it was related to a music/tech festival thingy in the southwest somewhere.

Kind of a big gap between answer 1 and 2 don’t you think? I am not an expert on it but know more than a little about it

living in Oregon you would think I wouldn't have a clue about this...

BUT!  SXSW is a frequent answer in the New York Times crossword so I learned about it that way.

I have heard of the "South by Southwest" event.  But with absolutely zero context to the abbreviation of "SXSW" in the OP I had no idea what those letters were representing.

I know it’s like a festival in the Austin, TX area but that’s about it.
I put you in the middle category. You recognized the four capital letters "SXSW"? Or you knew what "South by Southwest" was by the full name?

Maybe a big gap. For you, either answer works.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_by_Southwest

South by Southwest (stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By) is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days.

I did know the full name, yes. I listen to Alt Nation on Sirius quote a bit.

Late 40’s. Heard of it, but not the abbreviated “sxsw”. Figured it out without google. Thought it was mostly a music concert.

This thread is the first I've heard of it. So, it's apparently a music festival near Austin? Why in the world would people think that's common knowledge?

The poll results would indicate it’s mostly common knowledge.

To be fair, I had never heard of it until I moved to Austin in 2006, and I consider myself pretty music-savvy.  So yeah I dunno.  Maybe folks are more savvy these days and/or it's reached a higher level of popularity in 14 years.  Very well could be the case.

It’s definitely grown in popularity the last 14 years as have all things Austin. Also the ability to spread and access info/entertainment has increased the last 14 years.

I just got this in my email inbox from the Chicago Tribune.

SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, canceled due to coronavirus concerns

SXSW arts and technology festival canceled due to threat of the coronavirus outbreak

SXSW has officially been canceled, amid growing fears over the spread of coronavirus. As of Friday afternoon, there have been 17 confirmed cases in Texas, where the annual entertainment, music and technology festival takes place.
If this is such an obscure music festival that some of you claim to have never heard of, why does the Tribune think it's important enough to send out a breaking news update to their entire subscriber list?

also note that SXSW is mentioned 3 times. They never even bothered to call it 'South by Southwest' because everybody who doesn't live under a rock knows what that is.

Good news for many of you - the event you never heard of will not happen this year.

BREAKING: Austin Mayor Steve Adler says #SXSW is cancelled this year.

From SXSW:

March 6, 2020: City of Austin Cancels SXSW March Events

The City of Austin has cancelled the March dates for SXSW and SXSW EDU. SXSW will faithfully follow the City’s directions.

We are devastated to share this news with you. “The show must go on” is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation.

As recently as Wednesday, Austin Public Health stated that “there’s no evidence that closing SXSW or any other gatherings will make the community safer.” However, this situation evolved rapidly, and we honor and respect the City of Austin’s decision. We are committed to do our part to help protect our staff, attendees, and fellow Austinites.

We are exploring options to reschedule the event and are working to provide a virtual SXSW online experience as soon as possible for 2020 participants, starting with SXSW EDU. For our registrants, clients, and participants we will be in touch as soon as possible and will publish an FAQ.

We understand the gravity of the situation for all the creatives who utilize SXSW to accelerate their careers; for the global businesses; and for Austin and the hundreds of small businesses – venues, theatres, vendors, production companies, service industry staff, and other partners that rely so heavily on the increased business that SXSW attracts.

We will continue to work hard to bring you the unique events you love. Though it’s true that our March 2020 event will no longer take place in the way that we intended, we continue to strive toward our purpose – helping creative people achieve their goals.

From what I read yesterday, it was a game of chicken. Sxsw wanted to cancel, but to ensure insurance didn’t fight the claim, the city needed to be the one to shut it down. I’m sure something got worked out in the background.
This is not accurate.

That online petitions are stupid. And interfere with real information like updates from public health officials. Pretty sure that the opinion of EssentialOilMom1983 from the Internet had nothing to do with this.
I imagine you're wrong, but neither of us will be able to prove it one way or the other. But I think it's fairly ingenuous to think that they voice of the residents of Austin didn't play any part in the city's decisions or actions.

I had never heard of it until I moved to Austin a few months ago. At least that I can recall. I asked my wife and she had. I guess she found me under a rock..

I generally agree with your points that you've been making, but SXSW is such a huge media event, and we know how the media loves to cover things that affect news institutions. It's a natural thing, sure, but potentially explanatory regarding why it's such big news as news outlets are treating it.

SXSW is to music as Sundance is to film ... kinda hard to reckon folks don't know from it, or either.

I'd like to invite everyone to a livestream as @Capella and I facilitate a dialogue on where this cancellation places the Idea Space, whether we're in the middle of a paradigm shift that was fated to happen or if it was forced by Man, and what any of this means for the Future of Identity Freedom.

We just ask you to download the link in the text you just received, Accept all, agree to everything,  and prepare to be a few levels ahead.
