Much better mid-tempo.No, but we did cover The Replacements' "Bastards of Young"
I put you in the middle category. You recognized the four capital letters "SXSW"? Or you knew what "South by Southwest" was by the full name?Zow said:I know it’s like a festival in the Austin, TX area but that’s about it.
Maybe a big gap. For you, either answer works.JoeSteeler said:Kind of a big gap between answer 1 and 2 don’t you think? I am not an expert on it but know more than a little about it
Yep -- that was the intent.I have heard of the "South by Southwest" event. But with absolutely zero context to the abbreviation of "SXSW" in the OP I had no idea what those letters were representing.
South by Southwest (stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By) is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days.
I did know the full name, yes. I listen to Alt Nation on Sirius quote a bit.I put you in the middle category. You recognized the four capital letters "SXSW"? Or you knew what "South by Southwest" was by the full name?
35,000+ But Austin Mayor Adler said this am that cancelling the event would not make us safer. The petition to have it cancelled was up to 17k signatures earlier today.

music, film, and tech festival. it's a pretty big deal. why would anyone know anything I guess. This thread is the first I've heard of it. So, it's apparently a music festival near Austin? Why in the world would people think that's common knowledge?
The poll results would indicate it’s mostly common knowledge. This thread is the first I've heard of it. So, it's apparently a music festival near Austin? Why in the world would people think that's common knowledge?
To be fair, I had never heard of it until I moved to Austin in 2006, and I consider myself pretty music-savvy. So yeah I dunno. Maybe folks are more savvy these days and/or it's reached a higher level of popularity in 14 years. Very well could be the case. The poll results would indicate it’s mostly common knowledge.
It’s definitely grown in popularity the last 14 years as have all things Austin. Also the ability to spread and access info/entertainment has increased the last 14 years. To be fair, I had never heard of it until I moved to Austin in 2006, and I consider myself pretty music-savvy. If this is such an obscure music festival that some of you claim to have never heard of, why does the Tribune think it's important enough to send out a breaking news update to their entire subscriber list?SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, canceled due to coronavirus concerns
SXSW arts and technology festival canceled due to threat of the coronavirus outbreak
SXSW has officially been canceled, amid growing fears over the spread of coronavirus. As of Friday afternoon, there have been 17 confirmed cases in Texas, where the annual entertainment, music and technology festival takes place.
You were saying? The treatment of online petitions as real news is a symptom of the dumbing down of America.
That online petitions are stupid. And interfere with real information like updates from public health officials. Pretty sure that the opinion of EssentialOilMom1983 from the Internet had nothing to do with this. You were saying?
Getting canceled, just heard.
My sources are on point. You may have gotten bad info. They added musical acts today,
This is not accurate. From what I read yesterday, it was a game of chicken. Sxsw wanted to cancel, but to ensure insurance didn’t fight the claim, the city needed to be the one to shut it down. I’m sure something got worked out in the background.
I imagine you're wrong, but neither of us will be able to prove it one way or the other. But I think it's fairly ingenuous to think that they voice of the residents of Austin didn't play any part in the city's decisions or actions. That online petitions are stupid. And interfere with real information like updates from public health officials. Pretty sure that the opinion of EssentialOilMom1983 from the Internet had nothing to do with this.
Agreed. Major economic impact for Austin.tough call. I have no idea whether it was the right one.
I generally agree with your points that you've been making, but SXSW is such a huge media event, and we know how the media loves to cover things that affect news institutions. It's a natural thing, sure, but potentially explanatory regarding why it's such big news as news outlets are treating it.If this is such an obscure music festival that some of you claim to have never heard of, why does the Tribune think it's important enough to send out a breaking news update to their entire subscriber list?
SXSW is to music as Sundance is to film ... kinda hard to reckon folks don't know from it, or either.I just got this in my email inbox from the Chicago Tribune.
