The People's Pope. About to land at Andrews.

I think the most interesting part of the trip will be his address to Congress. Will be interesting watching the Republicans squirm a bit.

It will also be interesting to see how much he will get out with the people.

There is also some controversy over the missionary (Serra) he is about to canonize in California. Maybe some Californians (Tim?) know more about that?

I don't agree with new Pope on everything but I think his heart is in the right place and I really like him.

Avowed, life long, athiest.

People sure love to come out and see the Pope. I bet it's because they think if they see him it will somehow give them a leg up on getting into heaven.

I'm sure it is purely coincidental that he isn't visiting Minneapolis/St. Paul on this trip. it's not like this archdiocese couldn't use some good news for once.

Here's the info on Juniper Serra - the missionary he is going to canonize:

To Pope Francis, the 18th-century priest Junipero Serra was one of the United States’ founding fathers, a missionary who brought the Gospel to the New World.

To Valentin Lopez, the chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band of the Costanoan/Ohlone Indians, Serra was the architect of a brutal mission system that enslaved and terrorized Lopez’s ancestors in California.

Now, even as the fierce controversy over Serra continues unabated, one of Francis’ first acts during his visit to the United States will be to make the Franciscan friar from Spain a saint.

“We’re disappointed but we’re not surprised,” said Lopez, who plans to cut his hair as a sign of mourning. “The church has ignored indigenous people for over 500 years.”

Serra already has a freeway, numerous statues and a shopping mall in his honor. I think it's good if his canonization causes people to re-examine the impacts of the Spanish missionaries on the indigenous population. But Serra and his colleagues help advance Catholicism in the New World. There are certainly other saints who have acted less than saintly at times.

In June, Pennsylvania Catholic schoolteacher Margie Winters was fired for being a lesbian, sparking controversy after some parents discovered she had been married to another woman for eight years. Her termination triggered an outpouring of support from students, parents, and the local community, who helped her petition for reinstatement at Waldron Mercy Academy. But vindication for Winters — who taught religious studies and remains Catholic — seemed a long way off, as the Catholic Church still refers to homosexual relationships as “objectively disordered.” Frustrated, she told reporters she would “love to get the ear of the pope” during his visit to the U.S., a near-impossible prospect given the crowds of people who typically flock to the pontiff.

But in a surprising twist, Winters found out this week that she might just get that chance: She has been invited to the White House to meet the pope.

According to the Associated Press, Winters was officially asked to attend the welcoming party by the Human Rights Campaign, joining a slate of pro-LGBT religious dignitaries such as Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop; Mateo Williamson, former co-head of the Catholic LGBT organization Dignity USA; and Aaron Ledesma, an openly gay Catholic blogger.

Some officials within the Vatican have reportedly voiced unease with including LGBT representatives in the reception, worried that photos of Pope Francis with inclusive people of faith might be “interpreted as an endorsement of their activities.” Invited guests such as Gene Robinson have expressed surprise that Francis would balk at the possible meetings, since the pontiff has met with gay and transgender people several times during his papacy and famously responded to a question about gay priests by saying “who am I to judge?” However, neither the White House nor the Vatican has officially rescinded any invites.

Winters’ presence at the White House shines a spotlight on the growing issue of Catholic employees fired for being openly LGBT, a practice that has become increasingly common as the United States embraces LGBT rights. Several teachers, church workers, and diocesan employees have lost their jobs in recent years when Catholic employers took umbrage with their sexual orientation, sparking several large, ongoing protests and demonstrations among community members.

Church officials typically justify the firings by pointing to the so-called “ministerial exception,” a legal provision that allows religious institutions exemption from nondiscrimination policies when they hire and fire people for positions they claim to be “ministerial.” The exception traditionally applied only to clergy, but a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court case expanded the definition to include virtually anyone a religious organization deems to be a “minister,” granting them broad powers to discriminate in hiring.

A photo-op with Winters and Francis would a bit awkward for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the religious group ultimately responsible for firing her. The Archdiocese is hosting this week’s World Meeting of Families, a large Catholic conference which the pope will also attend, but has barred pro-LGBT groups from speaking and invited several presenters who promote ex-gay therapy.
Panties will be in a knot.

Has this pope turned all of the known pedophiles over to the authorities yet, or is he ok with it too?
Appears he is still ok with it for the most part.
Among the 2% who are paedophiles are priests, bishops and cardinals. Others, more numerous, know but keep quiet. They punish without giving the reason," Pope Francis was quoted as saying."I find this state of affairs intolerable," he went on.

Last year Pope Francis strengthened the Vatican's laws against child abuse and earlier this month begged forgiveness from the victims of sexual abuse by priests, at his first meeting with victims since his election.
Yeah not so much.

Yeah not so much.
So he's real sorry, but he's still hiding them from authorities in churches that people bring their kids to? Swell.

I don't think he is hiding anyone. I think there is a lot of resistance to him doing anything about it on the ground. High level people have been demoted and run out of positions of authority over hiding priests but he can only do so much so fast. I think he is trying and I think he is truly angry and sorry. Would I like it to happen faster and see these guys in prison? Absolutely but we have to acknowledge the reality of what he is dealing with.

I could not possibly care less about the pope or what he has to say.
Me neither. I left the Catholic Church years ago. Buncha BS. I'm still Christian but I do not subscribe to the catholic way and I do not care for this particular pope.

And what is that exactly?

A very large organization resistant to change with people in positions of authority actively fighting said change.

As a new atheist as former catholic who can't stay his old faith, I agree. This guy is great.

I expect a lot of accolades from secularists and the media about his thoughts on climate change and economic social justice and pretty much zero attention to his words on things like abortion and redemption.

I like this Pope, and I'm not just saying that because he blessed my niece's son a few months ago.

That is cool!!!
Yeah, was a big thrill for everyone in our family.

My niece and her husband are big fans of Pope Francis. They're also Jesuits and teach internationally - China 3 years, Palma de Mallorca last year, central Spain this year - and I cannot express how much it meant for them to have Pope Francis lay hands on Xavier.

Ironically, I come from a family of Methodists. My sister married a Catholic; her other child is a headmaster at a small parochial school. My ex-wife married a Catholic, so my son (now 17) was raised Catholic - though apparently Nietzsche recently cured him of that. My mother, R.I.P., converted to Catholicism in her mid-60s, largely because of her grandchildren.

This Pope seems bent on genuine reform and making the Vatican the servant of the Church. I think he is most strongly influenced by how he, as a South American Cardinal, was treated by Rome. I'm not a religious person but acknowledge he has wide influence, and generally speaking I think there is much good he can accomplish while he is still in power. Given his age (79) you wonder how long that might be.

Well, for me, his words are meaningless until he actually gets something done. I'm sick and tired of hearing what he has to say to tell the world about how they should be living their lives until he cleans up the organization he runs. Instead of visiting an achdiocese that is suffering through a large scale conspiracy that victimized hundreds if not thousands of people, he's going to cannonize another people who doesn't deserve it and tell America how they should treat the environment.

I'm going to judge him by his apparent priorities, and based on that, it's just more of the same as far as abuse goes.

So they will just pick and choose what they want to hear. Just like Catholics.

Of course we are going to have disagreements. I disagree with him on many things. But where we agree surely we can give our support. And he is the first Pope I can remember agreeing with anything on. And he is the first Pope that seems less worried about himself than his flock.
