portis looks like he's in big trouble this season. how good of a runner is betts? if portis continues to be ineffective or goes into surgery (seems possible with 2 spurs in each leg), betts could be a fantasy boom.

hoping betts does take over as I snagged him as the last player in our draft. He should get some carries in garbage time this week or even more if Portis is limited. He's subbed pretty well in the past for Portis.

He's subbed pretty well in the past for Portis.
Not really anything special. In 2006, after Portis was on IR (hand injury, IIRC), Betts had good end-of year stats:245 carries, 1154 rush yards (4.7 ypc), 445 receiving yards, 5 total TDs. Most of that production came after Portis went on IR. That is the best stretch of his career. For the rest of his career, Betts has averaged under 4 ypc (3.7). He will get receiving yards, but he doesn't score TDs much.If Portis gets hurt, he will put up more points than otherwise, but he won't (IMO) be a fantasy stud.

Right now Washington sucks even with Portis, I don't see them improving without Portis.
Agreed, if Portis were to be out, they would likely be succesful this week against Detroit, but it's not going to help them in the long run. Betts is a decent back-up, but he's not as good as Portis.

Is Portis going to play tomorrow?
It's looking like he'll be a game time decision (or at least, a game day decision), but if I had to guess, I would say yes.
Agreed-based on his past history (and on Zorn's comments), I would expect Portis to play. The only concern I have (& it won't stop me from starting him if it's comfirmed he is playing) is that if the Skins get up big, Portis might see less time late in the game. However, based on how they played against StL, Washington getting up big is in no way a given.

I'd expect Portis to play tomorrow but I'd be shocked if he does not miss games this year. After week 1 he was complaining how he felt very sore which considering his usual lack of playing time in the pre-season is really not a big deal. I think the bone spurs in both ankles however could prove to be an issue all season long.

A very long discussion occurred in this forum yesterday discussing Betts value if Portis were out. I'm of the opinion Betts value would be very high. I'm not going to get into it all again but in short in a PPR league I would prefer Betts with no Portis in the lineup more than I prefer Portis right now with his injury and coming out on third downs. But that's just my opinion and I'll note that Redskins fans seemed to come out in droves to tell I'm wrong. Personally the only way I think Betts would not very productive is if in fact he's not the clear cut handcuff and it became a rotation of Mason/Betts.

This is what ESPN's Stephania Bell had to say about his injury:

Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins, (Q): This scenario sounds like it could be more problematic for Portis fantasy owners over time. Portis, who did not practice all week and is listed as questionable, has bone spurs in his ankle according to coach Jim Zorn. Zorn did tell the Washington Times that he expects Portis to play Sunday, but his acknowledgment that Portis is dealing with spurs in both ankles hints at this being problematic all season. Spurs don't disappear on their own and while the pain can certainly fluctuate, their presence will not. It will be important for the Redskins to manage Portis' workload, both during practice and during games and it may change from week to week depending on how he's feeling. Fantasy owners need to be aware that the role for Ladell Betts could be increasing.

Portis is a drama queen but he'll play....with the Detroit matchup you would be nuts not to start him! Betts is avg at best - the Betts owner has been dangling him but I'm not overpaying for insurance. If you had to start Betts your team is in big trouble anyway!
