Game notes

Gibbs said RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) and CB Shawn Springs (abdomen) are the only players whose availability is in serious doubt for the opener. "Most of the other guys are ready to roll," Gibbs said

Mabey Duckett is the back to draft

History says that Gibbs will know how to use Duckett

The biggest surprise thus far in "Joe Gibbs, the Sequel" is that it took the coach this long to get a big banger to round out his running game. Something hasn't looked right in that Redskins' backfield over the past two seasons, with shifty Clinton Portis darting around as a one-man show. The thunder has been missing, the tough-yardage guys we remember from the old days of the Hogs. Rock Cartwright is the team's current fullback and he gives it an effort, but at 5-foot-7, he averages out to be little more than heat lightning.

Enter T.J. Duckett, the newest Redskins acquisition. He comes over from Atlanta, and a lot of people will have you believe it was strictly an insurance move to cover Portis' recent shoulder injury. But Gibbs has always loved the battering-ram types, the ones who can hack away at the middle of a defense and control a clock. And he's always gone for reclamation projects, scrap heapers, to fill those roles.

During Gibbs' first season in Washington (1981), he inherited an aging John Riggins (6-2, 230 pounds) and jump-started the Diesel into the most celebrated stretch of his 14-year career.

Four years later he would take a chance on the troubled George Rogers (6-2, 228), a drug casualty. Rogers repaid him with 31 touchdowns in three seasons.

In ’89, Gibbs swapped for a couple of retreads named Earnest Byner (5-10, 215) and Gerald Riggs (6-1, 232) to fix a ground game that had collapsed to 25th in the league. Byner and Riggs juiced it back to 14th.

And there's one more connection — all of these big fellas left D.C. wearing Super Bowl rings, so you get the feeling the formula works.

Which brings us back to Duckett. At 6-0, 254, he fills out a uniform and can bring the kind of thunder Gibbs is looking for. When he's geared up to play, the bodies go flying and it's an impressive thing to watch.

The reclamation work will be Duckett's disappearing act. One series he's breaking off facemasks and eight-yard runs; the next he's the invisible man. He has one 100-yard rushing game in four seasons. So far, you can stamp his pro career as a disappointment, and Gibbs has little room for loafers in his Super Bowl recipe.

If Duckett performs, then once again we'll hear the boom of the Redskins' offense charging toward the postseason. And how will we know if Gibbs is dissastisfied? Well, the unbroken silence over Washington will give that away.

Clinton Portis has bust written all over him. The guy just doesn't bounce back from injuries.

This is the only time he missed a game due to injury in week 4 of 2003 season. He came back to get over 200 yards combined in week 5. Other games he has missed were late in the season being rested with nothing to play for.

So what are you talking about?

He has no clue what he is talking about here.

Betts is the play of Portis can't go.

Duckett is a goal line threat, nothing more.

Wash had a rash of injuries in August at RB. That's why they got TJ.

Really? Not sure if I agree with this. Maybe week 1, as Duckett hasn't had much practice time with the team, but Duckett seems like the guy to me if Portis goes down. Why would they go after him for only a GL threat? Portis has proved he can punch it in. I read that as, if Portis isn't healthy we aren't confident in Betts as our primary RB.

I agree. Hasn't Gibbs always preffered the bruisers who push the pile forward for four or five yards? I could see Duckett splitting with Betts, but getting the majority of carries in the process.
