Dan Pompei, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith has contacted former NFL head coach Mike Martz about their vacancy at offensive coordinator, according to a source close to the situation. The two have not had any substantive talks yet.

Great news for Cutler fans, the worst of news for Forte owners

 
IF, the Bears can find some talent for the right side of their offensive line(Williams/Omiyele have some potential to be solid on the left side for a few years), I love this move. If the line protects Cutler(or doesn't) like it did this season, Calab Haine had better be ready.

Either way, this is very good for fantasy owners and the Bears offensive talent...

:confused: If Martz is the OC, then pass protection is the question. Cutler will get a beating if the 2010 o-line plays like the 2009 o-line. And while the Bears like Hanie, they need to get another QB in, one who has actually played a game in the NFL. However, Angelo has ignored the backup QB position in the past (backing up Grossman with rookie Orton), and he could do so again.As far as Martz goes, he's got to be an upgrade over Turner. And I do like the idea of someone who isn't necessarily associated with Cutler coming in as the OC - gives him a chance to learn from someone else and hopefully Martz will hold him accountable for his play.
 
Martz running the offense would have the following effects in my opinion:

Value Up-Cutler, Hester

Value Down-Forte

Value Gone-Olsen

 
1. As mentioned above, pass protection gone = Cutler getting hit more = bad

2. Is Martz bringing Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, and Torry Holt in their primes with?

3. Wha kind of success did Martz have in Detroit and SF?

To me, just looks like another Lovie bringing one of his buddies in for the last ride. Martz will be looking more to move in as the next HC rather thn just be the coordinator. Shows also again, that not Jerry Angelo, but Lovie Smith runs that organization. Fortunately, its only a year or two to go.

Disagree with this. How do people think Forte's value goes down? Martz gave Faulk a boatload of receptions, and the same for Frank Gore. He was in the process of doing the same for Kevin Jones, except Jones got hurt too much. Check his stats at the time of injury though...guy was lighting it up.The Martz factor puts the offense in better situations to score, so even if he does tend to throw it more, Forte will have more scoring chances because the offense will move the ball better. And he'll get back to throwing the rock to Forte a ton.Cutler's value would go way up, because he's a perfect fit for Martz...rocket arm, good ability to elude the pass rush with his mobility, and paired with an OC who isn't terribly worried about throwing 20+ interceptions.Agreed on Olsen though...his value would be nil under Martz.
 
I really don't think the CHI OL is nearly as good as the STL OL was in protecting Warner (who did get his share of hits) so this might not be Jay Cutler's wet dream come true.

 
I am a Bears fan first and foremost, so here is why I hate the Martz idea so much. Yes, they will be throwing all over the field to everyone, but as has been mentioned, the Bears O-Line is just not that good, so Cutler will be left vulnerable more often with 3 and 4 WR spread sets. Also, for all of the great passing numbers Martz offenses had when he was O-coordinator in Detroit and SF, as a whole those offenses ranked 19th, 22nd, and 23rd respectively from 2006-08 in total offense. They didn't or couldn't run the ball. Those teams all had turnover ratios in the negative because the QB's threw 19, 22, and 22 INT's. Do we think Cutler will throw for 5,000 yards but throw 30 picks? Might be good for fantasy but not good for the Bears, that's all.

You are correct. Martz's offense does not fit Chicago's personnel. It will end badly.
 
This would be the best possible thing that could happen to Forte, he's a much better receiver than runner. With Martz tendency to completely ignore the run, Fortes carries might drop, but at least he might break 4 yards per carry

totally disagree, Martz offense asks for the QB to be very accurate and make quick decisions. Cutler is neither. At least with his mobility Cutler might not get killed in the offense, but his INTs and sacks will still likely go up.

I'm no gambler, but I'd put everything I have on the fact that Cutler's INTs go down next year.

Martz sucks. Has no clue how to use a TE. He continually looks dumber every job he takes. Jimmy Raye turned V. Davis into a stud yet Martz couldn't do antything with him. That should tell you the skills of Mike Martz.Az-Hakim can't wait for him to get a job....and shaun McDonald too.

:towelwave: he uses TE to max protect. and the only reason az and shaun were ever even a blip in the nfl was because of martz.everyone in chi goes up. olsen goes down.

No, the Martz offense doesn't ask for the QB to be accurate. It helped a ton that Warner was deadly accurate, but that's why they had a legendary offense under him. Kitna threw 42 interceptions in two seasons under Martz, yet remained the starter. He also took a ton of sacks and got knocked around a great deal. However, he also threw for over 8,000 yards and 39 TDs while completing a higher % of passes than he ever had before while throwing it almost 1,200 times. It could be argued that Cutler possesses the most natural talent of any QB that Martz has worked with to this point.And for those saying Martz was horrible as OC in anyplace he's been, please go and check the stats for the respective teams he took over for in the seasons before he got there. Just because Vernon Davis wasn't a top-3 TE under him does NOT mean he failed there. It's well-known that he doesn't utilize the tight end...that's just because he uses EVERYONE else.

 
Oh, there is no doubt that a Martz offense puts up huge stats. The problem is that Martz is too stupid to adapt to the team he has. He still thinks he can make any QB Kurt Warner and every WR Isaac Bruce & Torry Holt. He was spoiled by that and hasn't figure it out yet.

He failed to utilize Calvin Johnson in Detroit, Gore and Davis in SF. He will fail until he learns how to adapt.

 
Martz will make everybody better. The Bears don't have the depth at receiver to not use Forte and Olsen. Forte could be Marshall Faulk Jr and Olsen can be split out wide. I'm more worried about Cutler being able to make this offense work. He has an arm but does he have a brain?

Yea I agree, I dont see how anyone could say this is a bad thing for Forte. His strength is in the receiving game, and with a more aggressive pass game his YPC should increase.
