Potential Bears Starting QB in 2008 (1 Viewer)

According to Dan Pompei in the Chicago Tribune, the top candidates (outside of Griese and Orton):

•Derek Anderson: The Browns quarterback who threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns in Week 2 is scheduled to become a restricted free agent.

•Brian Brohm: The Bears probably would have to be drafting high to get a shot at the Louisville quarterback. At this point Brohm looks like the only prospect you would even consider starting as a rookie.

•Daunte Culpepper: He could be the most talented quarterback available if he proves to be healthy in Oakland. Culpepper will be an unrestricted free agent but might not fit the Bears' offense.

•Josh McCown: The journeyman will be a free agent and the Raiders are likely to let him go.

•Donovan McNabb: It's unlikely the Chicago native will be traded or cut if coach Andy Reid remains in Philadelphia, as expected. But the Eagles did draft his potential successor this year, Kevin Kolb.

•Chad Pennington: He could be the best fit for the Bears' offense, and the Jets might be willing to trade him if Kellen Clemens shows he can be an NFL starter.

•Jake Plummer: The 32-year old is retired but under contract with the Bucs. If he decides he wants to play again for a team other than Tampa Bay, the Bucs probably would demand a second- or third-round pick in return. The Bears made a run at Plummer when he was a free agent in 2003, but he chose Denver.

•Tony Romo: His contract is up after the year, but the Cowboys aren't likely to let him get away. If they don't sign him to a contract extension, they will franchise him.

•Chris Simms: He's in coach Jon Gruden's doghouse in Tampa and a candidate to be cut or traded. But he hasn't proved anything.

•Billy Volek: The Chargers backup will be a free agent, and there are some who think he has the ability to be an NFL starter.

The best 2 options are the ones that won't be going anywhere on their respective teams.

Griese's as good as the others, plus has the experience in the system. Maybe get a QB early the draft. I really really do not want Pennington if Griese's already here.

No Woodson? I think he's by far the best talent at QB in next year's draft. The kid looks fantastic and makes great decisions (as witnessed by his new NCAA record for passes completed without an INT). That's what Bears' fans need - a good decision maker.

He may be ahead of Brohm by year's end. Given the Bears' track record at the position, they should move up to the #1 pick and take Darren McFadden to play QB.I wonder what kind of insurance Jim Miller, Chad Hutchinson and Jonathan Quinn are selling now. Heck, a thread on the most embarrassing Bears QB of the last twenty years would take years to resolve.

Done. Locals think he's dropped even behind Orton. But you never know.
What about Orton?? He was weak as a rookie but who isnt as a QB. I think if the Bears drop a few more games it may be time to give him another chance. Time to see what he has learned in the last couple of years. Seems like he got burried on the roster yet hasnt been cut. Any thoughts?

the Bears dont want another young QB. The D is aging and thier time to win is now. Pennington sounds like the only real fit.

They should keep Griese in 2008, and draft Andre Woodson out of the University of Kentucky. He should fall to mid-late 1st round this year. Let him sit behind Griese in 2008 to groom him and start him in 09.

I agree....see what Griese can do, let a youngster mature on the bench learning the system and speed of the game.

I could see Pennington or Leftwich as options. Pennington in particular would be a good fit IMO because with the Bears defense they need a good game manager at QB and not necessarily a gunslinger. Pennington is a solid game manager. I doubt they will be picking high enough to get one of the top rookies.

Watch Woodson soar up to a top 10 pick after he works out. Bank on it.

Top 5 IMO. No chance the Bears get him.Chad Henne could be a good midround selection. He's a pretty decent fit for their team and should slip a lot more than we would have hoped.Ok, so he probably wouldn't start as a rookie until later in the year. Forgot this was only for 2008. ;)

Orton will never be more than a serviceable backup. I don't think his performance blew his chances as much as the fact that while he was struggling, instead of hitting the film room or practice field he was photographed extensively back in West Lafayette drunk off his *** with a bottle of JD and his shirt off. Not what you want to see out of your starting QB.If he matures, he might get another shot, but that's a big if. I did like him in college.I don't think the Bears will have a chance at either Woodson or Brohm. They may need help at RB too as Benson hasn't done anything and the Bears' track record of RBs is getting almost as bad as that with QBs - Salaam, Enis, A Train...
