***Pre-Game Thread*** Green Bay at Chicago (2 Viewers)

So in Summary Bears fans think the Bears are better and will win and Packer Fans feel the Packers will. We also have the usual suspects who feel repeating themselves to those who will not listen will overcome that resistance.Me, I'm excited and nervous. No outcome will surprise me. If my team prevails I may act as if it were inevitable, though I know right now that is not so.
Well said. It's just too bad we don't have Finley and Ryan Grant.
And if the Saints had M. Jenkins, C. Ivory, P. Thomas vs Seattle. But in the end every team has injuries and who plays is all that matters.

:lmao: THISI'm pretty much skipping the back and forth posts that just re-state the same tired arguments or insinuate that one team has a clear cut advantage over the other one at this point. The buildup for this game is unlike anything I've ever experienced in my lifetime as a Bears fan. Here's hoping both teams step up their game for the big stage this Sunday; and regardless of who wins that they manage to come out of this contest relatively healthy for the Super Bowl. Just have to remember to pace ourselves, there's going to be a lot of alcohol as well as adrenaline flowing for 3+ hours this fine Sunday afternoon.

This thread seriously needs to get locked and flushed from FootballGuys. Yes yes, it's more important to us than the actual Superbowl.

But you're right, GB fans. Bears are bad. You completely crushed them in week 17 and they gave their all that game. You don't have to worry about them. Heck, you don't even need to practice this week. Just go to Disneyland now and come back sunday morning in time to trounce them on their porous field. They have zero chance of winning! You don't need no stinking plan! Just toss darts at your playbook and beat them like the Cubs that they are.

At first I thought you got it. Then you typed that 2nd paragraph.

yeah, I know. Internet civility just isn't in human nature. I tried...and then I got dragged back into it. It's what happens when your superbowl comes a week earlier than expected. And it's not even that I know the Bears could lose to GB next week, it's more because I know it'd be a lifetime of never living it down if that possibility happens.

It's also too bad Chicago didn't land Lebron...then the Bears would win by sheer presence of his awesomeness.

As opposed to the "manifest destiny" crap the Packer fans are thowing out.

The Packers are empirically the superior team, and have been almost every week. It's just that that hasn't stopped the Bears from winning games in the past.

As a life long packer fan who like's cheese and camouflage I am disappointed with my fellow Packer fans. and wish we could act more like the cool and sexy Chicago fans.

Will be lucky if were just down by 3 scores at halftime. sure Rodgers is equal to Jay Cutler but we dont have a running game like how Chicago does. I have much respect to Bears fans ,would be honored loose to the Bears and will root for Chicago in the Superbowl as they begin a new dynasty.

I see both teams start at zero. The Packers p!ssed the first game away with dumb penalties and that James Jones turnover. The Bears had the full personnel in the second game but in all honesty nobody can say that was a full-out effort. I still don't get how letting Cutler absorb six sacks helped anybody but there you go.

I'm stepping away from the Interwebs before, during, and after this game. The meltdowns from the losing side will be out of control.

Trash talking back and forth happens. But this thread lacks content.

Keys to the game:

-Clifton/Bulaga vs Peppers/Idonijie

Clifton/Tauscher didn't allow any sacks to this pair in the first matchup but they did allow multiple penalties.

Clifton/Bulaga didn't allow any sacks and were better in the penalty category.

Whomever wins round three will be key.

-Side note on the Bears pass rush. Tommie Harris hasn't been the same player for years in Chicago and will likely won't return in 2011. However, he has 3 sacks in the past 2 games. So he could be a wildcard in attempting to slow down Aaron Rodgers.

-QB play

Both QB's are playing well right now. However, these QB's don't play well against one another and i'm not sure people realize that. I averaged out the past two seasons stats for each QB playing each other(Cutlers two seasons in the NFC North). Now I know that many other factors are involved, but the numbers are surprising.

Rodgers- 22/31 227 1/1 2 sacks allowed 4 rushes 13 yards

Cutler- 19/35 218 1/2 4 sacks allowed 2 rushes 15 yards

Rodgers is more efficient, Cutler is sacked more and averages one more INT. But the difference isn't that great statistically. Whomever has the better, mistake free game will probably win.

-Bears OL

This OL has played much better down the stretch. Will it keep defenders off of Cutler? GB got to Cutler 6 times for sacks and disrupted many more passes in week 17. This unit did help spring a good ground game of Matt Forte down the stretch, to the tune of 6.1 vs the Packers. Can they duplicate that? Chester Taylor has been non-existent this season(most thought the FA signing would be productive) he had 10 carries for a 4.4 yard average vs the Seahawks last week. Keep an eye on him. If Chicago wants to win they need to run the ball and a double dose will help that cause.

-James Starks/John Kuhn/Brandon Jackson/Dimitri Nance/The Ghost of Dorsey Levens

Starks had a good game against the Eagles and a sub par game versus the Falcons. Which Starks will show up in the biggest game of his very young NFL career? John Kuhn has been successful all year for GB, although Chicago shut down his GL attempt in week 17. But will the BJ Raji GL project help his cause(I think it will). Brandon Jackson has been disappointing all year, however he has shown glimpses. This unit has to produce something to help out Aaron Rodgers. I don't think Rodgers can just sling it around and run all over the place to be successful. Some kind of a balance will greatly help his cause.

-Side Note James Starks hasn't played much all season and seems generally quicker than defenders. This is called fresh legs late in the season. Will that allow him to spring any runs by the veteran trio of Briggs/Urlacher/Pisa who might be slowing down late in the year. We will see.

Dom Capers vs Mike Martz

-Do I really need to type anything here? Everyone knows they both have plenty up their sleeves and will use it all in a game like this.

Special Teams

-Chicago has a huge advantage here with Hester, Gould, Maynard pins it deep, and Corey Graham who is a pro bowl snub.

-However, GB played very well on Special teams in week 17 and made this phase even throughout the game. If they can do that again, it will greatly improve the odds for GB.

-Side note: Tim Masthay has played very well lately(in the Chicago game he played great) if he has to punt, haha. However he is only 23 years old, will the pressure get to him? It is his job to neutralize Hester.

Charlie Peprah and Sam Shields have played well this year. However neither has a lot of experience, nor highly touted. With GB scheme of blitzing and keeping Woodson as a nickel type of player, these two will need to keep up the solid work.

Lots of talk here. However you sort of gloss over the fact the Clay Matthews is the NFL defensive MVP (voted by 3 different bodies so far). He's the best player on the field when he's out there. To not even mention him shows you have just a bit of bias. But good writeup otherwise. He's played better than Peppers, Urlacher, or Briggs. He's the definition of a game changer. And then there is also Tramon Williams. He's playing phenomenal football. He's basically ended two Pro Bowl Qbs season in the past two weeks. He made "Matty Ice" look like Vanilla Ice. He turned Mike Vick's cinderalla story back into a gutted pumpkin. He's going to pick Cutler off at least once.

First off, I am not a fan of GB or Chicago, so I have no bias. I just like stirring things up at times(hence the Rodgers link, which I thought was funny and heard him discuss on ESPN radio today).I got sick of reading this thread and fans bickering. Provide football content or get out.I provided 7 points that I thought were significant. I also didn't talk about Urlacher/Briggs/Charles Woodson/Nick Collins. I discussed the matchups/keys I felt would make the biggest difference in the game. Clay Mathews has had one sack versus Chicago all season, they will scheme to stop him IMO. Will the OLB(whomever starts) opposite Mathews be effective on sunday. Welden had 3 sacks in week 17, I think it was Zombo(too lazy to look it up now) got to Cutler in week 3.We could also discuss Charles Woodson vs Earl Bennett. Woodson will guard the slot generally and blitz off the edge as he did successfully in week 17(blitzed 16 times I believe). Rashied Davis is a ST player that played the slot in week 17 when Bennett was resting his injury. Will Bennett playing make a difference? Will Woodson see as much success as he had in week 17 blitzing? Or will Capers dial back the blitz as he did in Atlanta and Philly?

Sweet post, you sure showed him.

I also think Tramon Williams is more important than Charles Woodson to that defense right now. Having Tramon literally shut down a WR allows Collins to focus on the other side of the field.

Thank you tdmills, for trying to turn this into an actual football discussion. Seriously.

Wow, It's Tuesday and I'm already sick of "GB sucks, CHI rules!" and also "CHI sucks, GB by 40!"

Sigh......Please people.....let's try talking about football for once.....

Ah...so you are a troll.

I need the Bears to win simply because I don't want to listen to Packers fans all season.

I just want to see Forte or Chester absolutely light up Clay Matthews on a blitz for a deep 6. Preferably on the Bears first series.

What an embarrassment of a thread.

I'm a Packer fan and hope my team wins. I have Bears fan friends and they hope their team wins. If the Packers play like last week, they have a good chance of winning. If the Bears play at the top of their game, they have a good chance of winning. This is often the case for every other matchup, week in, week out.

Regardless who is better "on paper" (as if that's worth anything), the team that is coached better, plans better, plays better, executes better, and gets a lucky bounce or two is often the winner - despite any and all expectations otherwise. Just ask New Orleans and New England.

I can't believe people get into pi$$ing matches about who has the best chance of winning. Take it somewhere else kids. Grow up.

Where else would you take it? This is a football discussion board. What should we discuss on here if not football?

I must say, I've been very impressed with Tramond Williams' play in the playoffs. He's not just "some other guy across from Charles Woodson." He's played very well and gives GB a pretty good duo at CB.

Many have stated even before the playoffs that Williams is the better pure cover guy right now.

I said it earlier in the year and was blasted for it during the Miami game when Marshall was having a good day. People finally came around to it.Nice article about him on Yahoo yesterday.

:hifive:
 You call this "discussing football"? Laughable. Looks like amateur hour to me. But perhaps your bar isn't set as as high as mine.

I must say, I've been very impressed with Tramond Williams' play in the playoffs. He's not just "some other guy across from Charles Woodson." He's played very well and gives GB a pretty good duo at CB.
Many have stated even before the playoffs that Williams is the better pure cover guy right now.

I remember you saying this. I didn't post at the time, because I was thinking,..Williams, blah..blah..blah, wait until Harris gets back. But then when the coaches let Harris go, the coaches saw something in Williams that was far better than Harris (of course Harris coming off the blown knees). It sure has worked out for us as of late.

Now, to back down a bit, I didn't meant to sound like I was evaluating the guy as great.I think part of what I was saying then was that the coaches were talking about how good Williams had been and he was emerging as their best cover corner.

Horrible schtick

Nah dude. I didn't take it that way. In fact, though I respect yours and others opinions on this site, I leave the player evaluation to the coaches. You know as well as I do after spending a lifetime playing and watching football, you've seen thousands of players come and go. What I hope is that the coaches recognise the talent and can coach them up to play outside theirselves even if it's for one day (Superbowl - aka Andre Rison). If he is even close to great, we will see him perform the same next year, or it's just another player who peaked at the right time for a GB win.

Many Chicago fans already won the first battle of the NFC Championship game. Jim Cornelison will be singing the national anthem instead of Fox backed American Idol guy. So, as is tradition when Cornelison sings the anthem for the Blackhawks, expect tons of cheering during his rendition same as during the Seahawks game.

Side note: I was at the Cubs-Sox game the day of the Blackhawks victory parade and a lot of fans began cheering during the anthem. I think this Blackhawks tradition could quickly grow into a Chicago sport tradition. I know tons of people think it to lack class and possibly patriotism but I love it. Not as much as I believe it is Vancouver whose fans sing their anthem themselves, but I still love it.
