I know theres a thread going on but lets try to talk about the Fantasy Aspect. How long do you expect him to be suspended / shutdown this yr.

A couple of notes,

*he admitted everything to police and Grand Jury but also said he does this routinely

*1st Grand Jury refused to indict him

*there will be a media uproar over the pics on Monday

*legal action will most likely be pushed off until the off-season

I'll be surprised if he sees the field again this year. After the Ray Rice fiasco, Goodell cannot afford to go soft on this one. Child abuse should get a longer suspension anyway.

If this is anything other than "indefinite", then Goodell should be fired. 10 games for Gordon still even though under the new drug policy he will not have failed. NFL is looking like a joke by the day, and Goodell is the head joker.

New policy is approved yet

In all honesty, regardless if you believe in the charges for either Rice or Peterson, I do not see how the league can not go as heavy handed as they can to show that they will not tolerate these types of actions from its players any longer. The NFL is dealing with high profile faces of its shield doing harm to a child just a few days after the Ray Rice video. I life terms not good for all involved but in fantasy terms, you better hope you at least grab Asiata if you took a high pick on Peterson. How could he play again this year and not have outrage at every moment he steps on the field?

I originally voted indefinite (thinking 8 or indefinite pending the investigation), but interesting post here by MOP. What if this gets handled by the local system pretty quickly?

Anyone see AP as being back in say ~6 games?

No chance. Public perception means a lot to the NFL right now, and they cannot be perceived as having gone soft on a child abuser. Goodell might as well pack his bags and start sending out resumes now if he goes soft on a child abuser after his bungling of the Ray Rice case.

the NFLPA is going to get Rice reinstated, their planning a lawsuit according to NFL network. They can also push that AD punishment comes after his day in court

There's no way this ends up being less than a full year imo. Not that there's ever a good time to beat a small child, but the timing couldn't be worse for Peterson.

I'd be surprised if anything happens quickly. The guy is going to have his day in court, where I'm guessing he'll get off lightly, being force to take parenting classes, maybe a few weeks in jail, fine.

That said, I'm not sure what the NFL does here, tough spot. It wouldn't shock me to see the vikes suspend him, but I also wouldn't be shocked to see him on the field next week.

If this is 2013, he's likely playing all year, until his court proceedings are final, at which point he's looking at a few games, max.

Predicting suspensions from the NFL is a complete unknown right now.

That said, there is close to 0% chance Peterson gets suspended more than 8 games.

This is totally divorced from reality.

I'm not saying he definitely will, or even weighing in on whether he should, get more than 8 games. But to think there's not a very high probability of a very lengthy suspension is silly, given everything that's just happened with Ray Rice, etc.

have you seen the pics? They are not good. Same level of evidence imo as the ray rice video

I always wonder why people say thing like this when its pretty obvious that it is not a 0% chance.

There is still a plenty large contingent that believes that's acceptable punishment. I'd vehemently disagree, but there are plenty that seem to think it's at least somewhat acceptable.

Hell, the Roddy White tweet proves this is an ENTIRELY different situation than Rice, where the whole league was pushing for a ban.

I don't see anywhere near the pressure on goodell to act in this case, as there was with Rice.

Yeah, pretty sure he was taking some liberties there and likely didn't mean it in a literal sense, right? Simply stating that he strong believes the punishment will be lighter than many expect...

NFL = No Fn Logic when it comes to these punishments.

Beating a 4 year old with a stick is at least the equivalent of a left hook to an adult female. At least. To me it is significantly worse.

That may not be the way it plays out, but I'd have a hard time rooting for Peterson if I were a Vikings fan.

I can't see them trotting him out there for a good long time. If I'm not mistaken the presence of a child during an incidence of DV is considered an aggravating variable...violence directed at a child has to be a step further.

isn't the new policy written to wait for the legal system to run its course? I don't know if child abuse falls in there or not but I don't believe the new policy allows for immediate suspensions from the league. I don't expect him to get much time either way. I think the texts he sent actually help him because they 'somewhat' back up his story about it being an accident and he showed remorse. hard to say though because the timing is the definition of awful.

The thing is that Due Process does not need to occur since Peterson has admitted he did it. The pics speak for themselves of the severity of the beating he gave the child. The texts he sent acknowledge that he knows he went too far. Even though his intent at the start of the punishment may not have been to physically hurt his child he admitted he went too far, he let his rage get the best of him. He lost control. Because of that he will be punished both by the courts and by the Vikings/NFL for his actions. I don't believe a lifetime suspension will be in order but a year long one certainly coupled with a heavy dose of counseling.

New Policy, domestic abuse=6 games, why would that not apply here?
Why didnt it apply to Ray Rice and why is he suspended for more than 6 games? Not defending Ray, but just wanting to point out that the league can do what it wants. So surprised over the years that some have not come to that realization yet. But maybe in time that will change.

As soon as the texts, pictures, and alleged statements to police are verified the Vikings will decide to cut or suspend him for the year. The only question is whether the league will suspend him indefinitely before the Vikings take action on their own.

Will not fall under the domestic abuse policy IMO.

I will be shocked with a suspension of anything more than 4 games and my vote was for 1-2.

Pretty much sums up what I think winds up happening.

It's not like this is AP has an unblemished track record here, either. And, he wants to go play in Texas, so there's that.

The Vikings are likely doing their due diligence to confirm all that they see, consult with legal, consult with the money guys, and the come out (rather soon, I would imagine) and announce they are parting ways. New regime.

And, the NFL has no choice but to suspend him indefinitely (I would assume under the personal conduct policy, over which RG has max authority). I imagine AP will be required to get his head screwed on straight about child abuse and demonstrate as much in a public forum before reinstatement and becoming a representative of the league again.

Can we take some friendly wagers on this. I'll leave the finer points of the debate to the other Peterson thread but I think these predictions of the Vikings cutting him and an indefinite suspension are INSANE.

I think it's MUCH more likely that Peterson is on the field next Sunday than it is that he will be suspended for 6 games or longer.

Not sure how it can be anything but 'indefinately'.

Pretty sure that if you took a poll it would be 100% that this is worse than Ray Rice's one punch KO of his now wife.

$25 donation to the above charity.

I say he doesn't play another down this year. If he does, I donate $25. And, for the love of god, if he plays next Sunday, I will donate $50.

You say he will be on the field next Sunday, but I'll give you even more latitude. You donate $25 only if his suspension > 6 games.

Deal?

Must agree to post confirmation of donation here. No room for Roddy White-esque welching on bets.

FYI...I can pull photo after photo from Peterson's Twitter and other social media feeds that show him time and time again doing wonderful things for kids that are not his. I'm not condoning or forgiving him but as mad as you are at him and rightly so, let's also not forget that Peterson does a lot of good for disadvantage kids and has an awful lot of photos taken of him making a difference way before these recent charges. In general he looks like he takes the time with a lot of young NFL fans. I don't believe in my heart that Peterson thought what he did was wrong. I still believe Peterson should be punished and at the very least the new 6 game mandatory domestic violence consequence should be upheld by the Commisioner who implemented these new punishments.

What are we talking here? Are folks thinking that Peterson should have his children taken away or lose parental rights? Think about what you are suggesting in regards to all the other kids that are not Peterson's but victims of domestic abuse by a parent. Where do these kids go? Some folks seem to be under the misguided notion that adults are just waiting to take these kids in. Maybe a few of you would instantly jump to take in this child but understand that most of the time social services does not want to break up families. There are a lot of unwanted kids in this country with no parents to take care of them, I hope some of this outrage sparks a few of you to adopt some of these needy kids from abusive homes.

I cannot forgive AP for torturing his kid because he heavily publicizes all the positive activities he has done with other kids. But, where you and I probably agree, the foster and adoption systems are not where they should be. That said, abused children do need protection. Parents who abuse their kids should have no legal right to abuse them again. Thus, child protective services, while imperfect in so many ways, becomes the lesser of the two evils.

I think Peterson has played his last game for the Vikings, bad p.r. to let him back, with his salary(highest paid RB in the NFL) and the wrong side of 30 next year, most homers really didn't except him back next year anyway. The rookie RB may make everyone forget Peterson quickly anyway, the rook had a 147.5 SPARQ score (players athleticism) with 140 being elite. I think Calvin Johnson has a 150 score.

He'll be on the field next Sunday
I hate to say this, but I almost agree here. NFL was not involved in ADP being de-activated. I could see Vikes using the time to craft a PR strategy to justify his reinstatement and pass the buck over to the NFL where we'll hear more about due process...even though he's already admitted whipping the kid.

Probably not. But, even so, legalities did not provide the foundation for what the Ravens and the NFL did in kicking Ray Rice to the curb.

And, while it's difficult to rank disgusting acts on a food chain of worse and worser, what Peterson did to his 4-year-old child is worse than what Rice did to Janay Palmer.

Not according the child's doctor or the grand jury that indited him.

Just a hunch, and this does not necessarily jive with my POV or level of outrage, but I think Peterson misses no more than the six game first infraction penalty. Goodell can't keep changing the rules based on popular opinion polls or what's trending on twitter.

Torture usually involves prolonged agony like the agony Christ endured at the post with cat o nine tails and also being nailed to a cross and left hung to die while bleeding out over the course of many hours.

Obviously I am trying to make a point. Peterson beat his kid, he whooped his kid, he manhandled the kid, he bullied that kid to some degree, not sure I feel he tortured this child. Now if we found out there was strong verbal abuse prior and after for an extended period of time then perhaps yes. Maybe you were trying to make a strong point by using that word but I don't believe Peterson in his mind made a conscious effort to torture his son. He was trying to teach him a lesson. He(Adrian Peterson) did a very poor job of teaching his son but I don't believe he intentionally wanted to torture his son.

I teach and I have students who are tortured at home and never have a hand laid on them. Because over a long period of time, parents who might be alcoholics(example) torture their kids even when they are not physically abusive. How about the delayed torture a child will experience in life and throughout for not being properly disciplined to function in society as a child? That's a form of torture you won't see discussed in here.

But I digress and I don't want to argue with you over the definition of a word. You want to use it, fine. I just think that word mixed with social media makes for a wildfire that forces the issue even worse and becomes a vice for others to speak out against.

Right. I keep hearing about it being "legal" in Texas.

What he did wasn't legal in Texas. That's like saying driving a car is legal. Driving 100 mph in a school zone is not legal.

This is a world of trouble for Peterson. I have no more insight than anyone here. And predicting league suspensions has now become almost impossible.

I would expect the league to hand down a minimum of 6 games. Maybe much more. But again, this is just speculation on my part.

J

The only thing he admitted was disciplining his son, he did not admit to child abuse.

One side is saying discipline that went too far, while the other is saying child abuse.

How long until this gets resolved? A week, 5 weeks, a year?

Because if it’s discipline than the punishment will be small is any, but if its child abuse than its more significant.

Only a Texas court can determine if it was legal or not. Until then, we are all guessing.

We actually don't even know if or how he's going to be charged yet.

But this is about more than the legal system. Texas courts do not determine his availability to play in the NFL. Ray Rice beat the legal system.

I don't believe Peterson thought what he did was wrong either. That may or may not make the situation more disturbing. I don't know.

But his intent really isn't the issue. His decision and subsequent behavior is. To use Joe's analogy, I may not mean to be going 100 mph in a school zone, but all that really matters is the 100mph.

I have no idea what he and the childs mothers arrangement is, but it certainly doesn't seem as if we are discussing displacing a child into the state systems. If he actually caused the injuries I have seen, and if what has been reported proves accurate, I would have no qualms about restricting his parental rights.

I agree and understand that there is a larger societal context and problem. In fact far worse things happen to children every day in this country. It's horrible. I don't have the solution to that.

But, in this particular instance, limiting Peterson's contact with the child isn't really that tough a leap.

He admitted to doing something that is legal in the state he did it.
Not according the child's doctor or the grand jury that indited him.

Only a Texas court can determine if it was legal or not. Until then, we are all guessing. We actually don't even know if or how he's going to be charged yet.
But this is about more than the legal system. Texas courts do not determine his availability to play in the NFL. Ray Rice beat the legal system.

Phrasing.

I'll say SHOULD be given the season off to get his life in order, and WILL miss the first half of the season.

With an outside chance he gets traded to the Cowboys at mid year. WILL be a Cowboy next year.

As long as we are in the prediction business.

i think he is done for the year. Cannot see how he can come back.
Oh my and for what? He loves his kids. He thinks thats whats good for them. He's done this many times before. You act like he got drunk and killed someone.

Ever get paddled at school? No? Ever see what marks that leaves? And this is government sanctioned.

Do any parents actually ever discipline their kids anymore? With what? What sort of marks does that leave?
