Aug. 16, 2006) -- I have spent the past two weeks visiting camps and watching preseason games. From what I've seen thus far, I'm sure we can look forward to another exciting season of close games and even closer divisional races than in 2005. There also will be great competition for the wild-card spots, of course.
If past history means anything, preseason results still are as important as ever in determining which teams make the playoffs and how far they advance. The past 10 Super Bowl champions went a combined 29-12 in preseason play. Five of the past six had winning preseasons -- two were 4-0 and three were 3-1.
None of the four teams in the 2005 conference title games had losing records (Pittsburgh was 3-1).

So, if preseason records seem to be some vague predictor, aren't players performances predictable? At least to a certain degree? It'd be interesting to see how players do in the preseason vs. the regular season and see if there is indeed a correlation. We can all give examples of guys who stunk in the pre and regular seasons and we can all give examples of guys who were lousy in one but great in the other. I wonder how accurate our perception of preseason games really is.
