3 of the top 4 preseason RB's are probably still sitting on waivers in your league. Normally, you can't put much stock into preseason stats, but with their current situations, do any of these guys have at least a shot to make a name for themselves in 2007?
"Joe" Echemandu - 35 carries/153 yards/4.4 avg - At 5'10" and 225 pounds, he is built to carry the load. He is entering his 4th season and has only 8 regular season carries in his career. He hasn't blown by Lamont Jordan in preseason (26/108/4.2), but he has stayed on par with him. The OAK backfield is crowded, and Dominic Rhodes will be coming back after his 4-game suspension. Joe is likely battling Justin Fargas to be RB3, and I think he has pulled ahead at this point, making him RB2 until Dominic returns. Michael Bush may be the future of the running game in OAK, but does NN2 (Nigerian Nightmare 2) have any real value in 2007?
Danny Ware - 38 carries/150 yards/3.9 avg - At 6'0" and 215 pounds, his 22-year old frame has room to grow. Thomas Jones got dinged up early, and the NYJ staff has been pretty quiet about the extent of the injury. If the injury is worse than the team is letting on, there will be some early season carries to be divvied out. Leon Washington seems to be on the smallish side, and may not be built for full-time duty. Leon and Danny are the only 2 RB's so far to have more than 5 carries this preseason (not counting TJ's 8 in week 1). Leon is a great 3rd down RB, but his rushing line doesn't look so good (27 carries/88 yards/3.3 avg). Could Danny be the one to get the bulk of the work to start the season if TJ isn't ready?
Ahmad Bradshaw - 20 carries/131 yards/6.7 avg - At 5'9" and just 198 pounds, he is not a big RB. The Giants seem to want to evaluate their RB corps quite a bit this preseason, giving 4 RB's at least 14 carries each (21 for Jacobs, 20 for Bradshaw, 17 for Droughns, 14 for Grant, and even 9 carries for Derrick Ward). It's no doubt that they want Jacobs to be a workhorse, but are the Giants coming up with plan B if Brandon falters? The top 2 RB's are not lighting it up so far (Jacobs at 3.9, Droughns at 3.0). Ahmad has broken at least a double-digit run in all 3 preseason games. The thing is, Ryan Grant is also quietly impressing as well, and also has at least a double-digit run in all 3 preseason games. Grant is built a bit bigger (6'1", 218 lbs), and may be better suited to carry the load. I guess what I'm asking here is, IF Jacobs falters, who becomes #2? Seems like there are 4 guys who have somewhat of a shot (Droughns, Bradshaw, Grant, and Ward).
I am not a homer of any of these teams, so I would like to hear some thoughts. Thank you.
