President Rudy Guiliani (1 Viewer)

As you may know, Rudy Guiliani will win the Presidential election in 2008. What are your opinions of him?

he can't count on the support of ny republicans. what makes you think he can be the candidate for the rest of the GOP?

with his performance during 9/11 he managed to obscure his rising unpopularity as mayor. his modest support as a senatorial candidate in the election versus a polarizing carpetbagger like hillary ought to tell you something. he's a basically good man who will be a tough sell to religous conservatives.

If he gets elected at the objection of the religious right, I'm all for it.

I'd love it if I had to choose between whichever Democrat emerged and Guiliani. I don't think that you'd be to happy with that choice though, BGP.

for the party that was reviled by the thought of naming a dyed-in-the-wool right-winger like McCain* for President, how is the nomination of a pro-gay, pro-choice guy like Rudy going to happen?

* As I've noted here many times, I have great admiration for McCain personally, but there's no question he's very conservative.

I remember a certain President whose extramarital affair galvanized the right so would it be hypocritical for the same base that chastised Wild Bill to support Rudy? I know way different context but cheating is cheating. Although I admit a RUDY chant would be cool.

seriously. rudy behaved really rather poorly leading up to his divorce, while he was cheating on his wife, too. his ex-wife is no shrinking violet and withstood the initial attack from the new york press. he and the GOP do not want her making the rounds nationally talking about how awful he was, how terrible he was as a husband and how she thinks he was a terrible father to their children.

I don't think I could vote for Rudy in the primary. If he makes it to a general, though? Id take him over most Democrats.

If McCain gets the nomination, I'm leaving for the convenience store to get a six pack of PBR and some Cheetos White Cheddar Puffs.

Better hurry. You've only got two years to learn to spell his name correctly.

Oh, and in case it matters to some of you. I met him during the last Senate race in New Jersey. He's got a big head. Not huge big, but compared to the rest of his body, he looks like a cartoon up close.

He's not a WASP.He won't win.
:goodposting: A pro-choice guinea isn't exactly going to "energize the base".

Plus, he's kind of a weenie.
Not to mention his Catholicism. There are (unfortunately) large numbers of the Religious Right who hold larryboy type views of Catholics.

Three strikes for Rudy: his last name ends in a vowel, he's pro-choice, and he's Catholic.

Jerry Falwell's head would explode if Giuliani got the Repub nomination.

I'm warming up to Rudy quite a bit, now that I think about it.

I would support Giuliani in a Republican power struggle. I would figure that people like Giuliani would represent the socially liberal, fiscally conservative branch of the Republicans against the bible-thumpers.

I've read stories from his days as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York that cast his personal and professional ethics in a pretty negative light. That said, he seems like an effective, charismatic leader; so he might not make for a terrible president.

How nice would it be to have four candidates...one for the middle-right, one for the biblebangers, one for the rational left, and one for the dingy uberLeft? But then I guess Congress would end up picking our president... :kicksrock:

More reasons why Rudy with the nom would be great.

Without those bible-thumpers, it's not even a party. More of a get together.

I agree.I think he would be a formidable candidate against any Democrat.

But, he has to win the Republican nomination first and I don't think that will happen.

He won't win.

I loved Rudy for a while - he is a GREAT general. Not so great peacetime leader. Unable to build consensus except for time of extreme duress. When he has to go under the scrutiny of a national campaign, I don't think his misteps will pass muster (his affairs, the way he handles business). There are some things New Yorkers may not care about that the nation as a whole, especially for President, will. Very very much an ends justify the means guy as well.

That said, he did immeasurable good for the City of New York in completely cleaning up the City and getting through 9/11. But once things started to settle down, his weaknesses were becoming more and more apparant.

For those that do not know, Guiliani has pretty much been polling as the top choice of voters ever since the 2004 race ended. He's getting more favorable numbers than McCain, and would whip anyone the democrats offered.

I would vote for Guiliani and be happy with it. Next question?

Polling has shown for years that Guiliani would beat McCain for the GOP nomination, so I'm not sure what you mean? I don't see any way McCain wins the nomination, but maybe he goes third party.

If McCain gets the noimination, I swear to you I'm voting for Hillary Clinton. McCain would be far more corrupt.

that says as much about the desperation and current state of affairs in the GOP that he's your #1 candidate at this point....

Socially yes, but he doesn't have a libertarian bone in his body and he's left of most of the Party on too many key issues like taxes and illegal immigration. Guliani doesn't have a chance.

I couldn't go that far. I just couldn't. There is an implant in my brain that prevents me from even contemplating another Clinton in the White House.

Interesting. The only dislike you have for him that you clearly stated was that you think he is "unable to build consensus".You have no issues with his policies?

Sorry, I really don't read your posts much so I have to ask this.Do you consider yourself a leftist? Are you posting in response to my question to leftists?

The problem with Bill Clinton was that he lied under oath. He committed perjury. He committed a crime. He became a criminal at that point. His law license was suspended and he paid a large fine. He should have resigned or been removed from office. I have zero respect for him in how he clung to power and any decent human being who believes in the rule of law should not have an inkling for respect for him, either. The Left attempted to spin the issue by saying it was all about family values and having an affair, which it was not. If the Left had its way, everyone would forget the perjury.

But running against a Hillary nomination will. ;)
If Hillary gets the nomination, I'm leaving for Costa Rica or Thailand.
You go to Costa Rica. I'll go to Thailand.

I wouldn't worry about Hillary. She has no chance to win the election. If I vote for her over McCain, its strictly a protest vote because McCain is absolutely corrupt and believes in nothing but power. We don't need that in the Oval Office. McCain would be Nixon II. But he would defeat Hillary.
