PRIEST HOLMES INJURY UPDATE (1 Viewer)

HOLMES NEWS NOT ROSY: Two weeks ago we reported that Chiefs running back Priest Holmes was meeting with renowned spine specialist Dr. Robert Wadkins to determine if the injury to his spinal canal has subsided. The news, however, was not what was expected. Multiple sources close to Holmes told FOX Sports that the injured area has not healed like they had hoped it would. Initially, the player was told that the spinal canal would hopefully heal within 30 days and he could then resume his career. Instead he was informed that the area has not healed sufficiently and the doctor wants to re-examine him in another three months. Holmes, according to teammates, is getting antsy regarding resuming his career. A one-month injury has now turned into, at a minimum, a four-month injury. His teammates do not believe he will return to the playing field, due to the area of the injury. In addition they believe it wouldn't be worth it for him to risk further injury to his neck just to fight it out with rising stud Larry Johnson at camp next year. We are not reporting that Holmes has decided to retire but such an injury has to weigh heavily in his decision-making process. On Saturday against the Giants, Johnson had his seventh consecutive 100-yard rushing game. He also scored two touchdowns, giving him 16, the third highest total in club history. Considering the Chiefs have the fourth most money against the salary cap next year, having Holmes retire may be the best thing for the team, especially since it's hard to pay two franchise backs

Huh? Do you have a source? Priest was on local KC radio the other day saying they found nothing wrong and he'll definately be back. I would think that worst case he's the RB2 and 3rd down back since LJ is a horrible pass blocker and is getting Green killed.

I'm no doctor but 30 days seems too quick to me. I thought this would take longer, didn't you guys?

Chiefs Notebook: Priest is welcome, Peterson says

The Kansas City Star

As Priest Holmes’ career-hinging tests draw near, Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson wants Holmes to know one thing — that he will have a spot on the team regardless of the salary cap and the fact that Larry Johnson will start at running back.

“He’s earned that right,” Peterson said.

Holmes will undergo tests within the next week to determine whether he’s neurologically sound. He has seen noted spinal specialist Robert Watkins since a helmet-to-helmet collision in San Diego at midseason.

Last month, new coach Herm Edwards told Johnson — who ran for nine straight 100-yard games — that he would go into training camp as the No. 1 running back. But Peterson and Edwards have said they would also welcome back Holmes, the franchise’s all-time rushing leader.

He must really love the game, but he is playing with fire if he decides to return. Nevertheless, that is why they pay him the big bucks.

Thanks for the update.

I remember when Bert Jones retired because of a spinal injury. He also could have chanced it, but decided that walking was more important.

Chief's trying to spin it like they are the good guys here. If they cut Priest, I think it costs them 1 mil against the cap.

Anyone know what happens if he retires? Do the Chiefs get any cap relief?

The only reason I'm bumping this thread is to remind everyone how serious this injury was to Holmes compared to now. In light of recent events, I think it's easy to forget.

Hasn't he made enough money that he doesn't need to chance a hit that will put him in a wheelchair the rest of his life? I just don't see where the reward outweigh the risks. Someone like Bert Jones knew this and chose walking. He just might be able to play without problems, but would you take the chance? I thought Holmes was more intelligent than this.

Nice way of saying you wish you had picked him up off waivers before you knew he was making a comeback.

Actually I did pick him up in 2 leagues (fantasy legends II and III), and could have had him in our league (I have the most fantasy $$$ to spend), but I chose not to go out on a limb for PH. That's not the point behind the bump however. The reason is that I can't believe he would put his health at risk, not to mention what one hit could do to his family. Sometimes I wonder if Holmes knows just how serious of an injury he had
