Printing Player Names on Address Labels (1 Viewer)

If you can download a list of players with team and position from somewhere in Excel (or CSV) format, you could use Word's "mail merge" feature to put it into a standard Avery label format.

I've been trying this since I posted the thread. Can't seem to get it to work. I have a list of all players names color coded by position. I only have first and last names though. Does it need more fields than that to work?

If anyone wants the file, I can email it. Just PM me your email addy or a mod can attach the file to this thread. I took the names straight from the VBD app. Labels have player name, position, and team/bye. They're also color coded by position and listed in alphabetical order by position.

Sent to the two that requested it via PM. Again, I haven't actually tried to print them on actual labels yet so if there are any issues with it, please let me know.

I'm waiting until 5:00 to minimize the audience at the printer. :pickle:

I used to do this for the Footballguys when we still sold draft boards. Depending on the type of printer you are using, I have some pointers for you.A). If it is a multi-media printer (one that can be used for printing on card stock/picture paper), you'll be way better off than if it is a paper-only printer. I had to buy a special multi-media printer that could accomodate varying paper weights/thicknesses - but I was printing 20-50 sets of lables at a time. If it is a printer that is used for only paper (a lot of printers are just for 20 lb, 92 brightness 8.5 x 11 paper), you're probably going to have to manually feed in the label paper one at a time, through the slot designed for non-standard paper (if there is one). Look for label sheets that aren't curled at the edges or curled up around the individual lables, other wise the labels will peel off the sheet and stick to the rollers in the printer (major headache). Also, be aware that you are likely to need to clear jams if you are using a printer designed for 20 lb paper only - familiarize yourself with how to do this in advance of printing.B) calibrate the printer to make sure it is printing precisely where it is supposed to be printing on the page - otherwise, you'll run into registration errors (the names printing half on and half off of the labels).C) even after calibrating the printer, you'll still have some registration errors, so check each page over after printing - you'll probably have to reprint some of the pages (in my multimedia printer, I had approx. 10% registration errors - the professionals who ran off large lots based on my proofs were around 5%-8%, depending on the run).D) printing labels takes a ton of black ink in an inkjet printer. Make sure you have a new ink cartridge for the printer to hand in case it runs out while you are printing. E) If you have a ton of problems printing the labels, I'd seriously consider handwriting with a black permanent marker - you can go buy multicolor labels at a business supply store and it may, in the end, be less time consuming to handwrite, depending on your printer resources and how it/they responds to the label paper. Good Luck! Sincerely,Mark Wimer

That doesn't sound good.

FWIW, it's a pretty heavy duy corporate color laser printer. It has a non-standard port and should print on these labels okay (Avery 5161).

The registration errors is what worries me.

One way to avoid registration errors - first use center justification rather than Left justification. You can just highlight the entire file and use the format justify command. If you have spacing issues - top/bottom you can add a blank line on top, depends on how much of the label you are using for the name. if you are space limited, you can make the firsst name smaller than the last (putting last name first if you can) also team name and position can be smaller.Oh yea, you may want to go in and edit some of the longer player names ie TJ and shrink the size of their name so it fits easier. this is done with the font button on Word 03 and in the format ribbon in Word 07.

I can add some space between the top of the label and the name. I already have all of the info centered on the label. Using 14 font so there should be plenty of room.

That will make your life a LOT easier. The printer being designed with allowance for non-standard pages is a key with addy labels. Let us know how it goes.
