Huh.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 3m

NFL eliminated traditional AFC-NFC Pro Bowl matchup; will be replaced with Pro-Bowl fantasy-like draft, per ESPN sources.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 1m

Now players will be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft (really). Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will be draft captains.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 2m

No more kickoffs in Pro Bowl. Rosters will consist of 43 players per squad. Game will be played Jan 26 in Honolulu.

Edit to add: See post 4. Still will be voting, but not by conference. Results are then drafted onto teams by the top vote getters. Rice and Deion will assist.

If I had to come up with ONE system that's actually worse than the current pro bowl voting system...it would be this one. So now Deion and Jerry are the only votes?

Or is the traditional voting still in place and they just draft from those names?

If so, being a pro bowler still means nothing.

This seems incredibly dumb either way.

While I agree the concept is dumb - don't be surprised if the draft gets better ratings than the game. This is just one more televison ratings event for the NFL.

2014 Pro Bowl, Presented by McDonald’s, Features New Format for NFL All-Star Game
Major changes include elimination of AFC vs. NFC format, fantasy football-like draft for team assignments, rules and roster changes;
Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders to serve as alumni captains
The 2014 Pro Bowl, presented by McDonald’s, will feature a new format for the NFL All-Star Game based on major changes proposed by NFLPA President DOMONIQUE FOXWORTH designed to make it the ultimate fan-friendly celebration of the game, the NFL and NFL Players Association announced today.

Gone is the familiar AFC vs. NFC match-up that has existed since 1971. Instead, players will be selected without regard to conference in voting by fans, coaches and players. For example, the top six quarterbacks following voting will earn distinction as All-Stars, regardless of how many are from AFC or NFC teams.

Players will be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft, in which two leading vote getters will join two NFL.com fantasy football champions – who will attend the Pro Bowl – to draft players. One of these champions will earn their spot as part of Lenovo’s Fantasy Coach of the Year program, which provides NFL.com fans a chance to be rewarded for their fantasy football skills. The other champion can compete for a Pro Bowl role by playing at NFL.com/fantasy.

The fantasy football champions will have Hall of Fame help. Pro Football Hall of Famers JERRY RICE and DEION SANDERS will serve as alumni team captains, assisting the Pro Bowl team captains and fantasy football champions in the draft process.

“As players, we wanted to keep the Pro Bowl to honor excellence in individual performance and connect with the fans in a different environment,” Foxworth said. “To do that, I worked with a group of players to map out new ideas.”

The Pro Bowl player draft will air on Wednesday, January 22 on NFL Network. Players will practice with their teams on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The coaching staffs will be from the losing teams in the AFC and NFC Divisional playoffs with the best regular-season record. The 2014 Pro Bowl takes place on Sunday, January 26 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, and will be televised by NBC.

“We were very receptive to the ideas that Domonique and the players put forth,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “From there, our office worked closely with him in developing the concept. The players made it clear that they wanted to continue the Pro Bowl and were committed to making it better than ever. We think these changes will enhance the game for both fans and players.”

In addition to these changes, several other aspects of the Pro Bowl will be new in 2014:

  • Game within the Game – A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. This will increase the opportunities for quarterbacks to direct “two-minute drills,” which are especially exciting for fans.
  • No Kickoffs – The coin toss will determine which team is awarded possession first. The ball will be placed on the 25-yard line at the start of each quarter and after scoring plays.
  • Rosters – The rosters will continue to consist of 43 players per squad. The kick return specialist will be replaced by an additional defensive back.
  • Cover Two and Press Coverage – The defense will be permitted to play “cover two” and “press” coverage. In previous years, only “man” coverage was permitted, except for goal line situations.
  • Stopping of the Game Clock – Beginning at the two-minute mark of every quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the clock will stop as if the play were an incomplete pass. This rule will make the team with the ball attempt to gain yardage toward the end of each quarter.
  • Game Timing – The game clock will start after an incomplete pass on the signal of the referee, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.
  • Play Clock – A 35-second/25-second play clock will be adopted instead of the typical 40-second/25-second clock.
  • Sacks – The game clock will not stop on quarterback sacks outside of the final two minutes of the game. Currently, the game clock stops in these situations outside of two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

The NHL has done this the past couple of All Star games, except the team captains are active NHL players and it's a live draft with the players sitting in the stands. Entertaining to watch and see who ends up being the last picked.

This won't make me be any more interested in watching the Pro Bowl, but I'd definitely be interested in watching a live fantasy draft with real players... Haha

So just to restate post #4...

There is still voting. It isn't Rice and Deion who do the draft. It's the two top vote getters who captain the two teams. Rice and Deion "assist" them, along with a pair of fantasy football winners from NFL.com's fantasy site.

I'd prefer the draft captains have advisors. The FPC champ and the FFPC champ.

If you're going to do a fantasy draft, then reward the best of the best for that year.

Imagine the thrill of meeting all the players, etc.

To the victors go the spoils!

I'm all for the overall format change, as this is a stagnant concept that nobody cares about, so anything could help.

But what the heck is up with the clock management stuff? Just...why?

And at least we'll get to see a game with the ball randomly being placed at the 25 yard line like a pickup football game, so everyone can see and agree how mind-bogglingly stupid it is.

Like the fantasy concept if you're required to keep this game alive.

Agree the draft will probably be more watched than the game.

I have not watched the Pro Bowl in years, and still won't....but I will tune in for the draft to see what happens.

This is another step closer to the NFL creating a Fantasy Auction Rookie Draft in the future. That would be as big as the Super Bowl ratings wise and would have you glued to the set the entire time if you weren't already. :)

As for the Pro Bowl, I have said all along, the NFL should bring back the "Skills Competition" like they used to do with QBs back in the day but do it for each position. It would be fun to watch and better than flag football disguised as a Pro Bowl game.

This game really should end if it weren't for the fact that it means so much to the Hawaiin economy. Nothing good or entertaining comes of it.

Is this really serious? It's basically just a skills competition. If they really wanted to go this route, they should blow the whole thing up and try out fan suggestions for things they'd like to see, like the long-snapper snapping the ball 50 yards into one lucky fan's crotch.

In addition to these changes, several other aspects of the Pro Bowl will be new in 2014:

No Auction draft? What kind of noobs are they?
Two-team FF leagues are pretty exciting.

The strategy of the draft actually could be interesting and awesome for two fans. Great way for the NFL to advertise it's own FF program.

If the Seahawks don't make the Super Bowl, Russell Wilson should be the #1 overall pick. He seemed like the only guy last year to take the game seriously.

Genius marketing idea for a draft. I will definitely be tuning in for that and I bet the thread on here will be really fun dogging some of the picks. It will be interesting to see who are the last guys picked, IE will it be linemen as opposed to skill positions, will people draft per actual performance dropping the players that got in due to popularity only? Will there be "most hated around the league" guys that the captains won't want to draft? Should make for lots of fun commentary and angles to examine.

Eliminating the AFC vs NFC thing should also appease a lot of people such as the ones complaining about the quality of the NFC QB's this past year vs the AFC QB's that got in.

And to think there was a time when fantasy football couldn't get the time of day from the real thing. Now the tail wags the dog.

The problem is the lack of interest of the players to go to the game and then once they're in the game that they don't try. This gimmick ain't going to change either of those things. I guess the "draft" becomes an interesting event in itself but the game becomes even less interesting because the old "NFC vs AFC" matchup will be gone.

Oh well.

About this garnering more ratings - why would anyone watch this (anymore than the past AFC/NFC games) if they do not actually have players on their own FF team? No one wants to watch a game just because someone else's fantasy player's are involved. People are supposed to care if Jerry's team beats Deion's team?

So does that say more about everyone else, or about Russell "Let His Name Be Forever Praised" Wilson?

We're all gonna be pissed when this thing's super popular and all these ####ing rule changes make it into the regular season/post season.

Chris Kluwe raised a great point about this rule change:

  • Rosters – The rosters will continue to consist of 43 players per squad. The kick return specialist will be replaced by an additional defensive back.
There are probably players who have contracts that pay bonuses for making the Pro Bowl as a returner. Now those returner spots are being taken away. There could be some legal issues involved in making a change that invalidates a contract term like that.

Though the overall idea came from the players themselves apparently. If removal of the returner came from them, I wonder how that would change matters.

I wish Chris Kluwe would go the hell away. Such a complete doosh.

Vegas was clearly getting tired of getting creamed on the over the last four years. This should curtail scoring substantially by cutting number of plays run.
