Processed meats as bad a cancer threat as smoking (1 Viewer)

what exactly qualifies as 'processed meat'
Wondered the same thing,

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-34620617

So what is processed meat?Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste and the main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives.

Simply putting beef through a mincer does not mean the resulting mince is "processed" unless it is modified further.

Processed meat includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces.

Red meat is a darker colour than white meat and includes beef, lamb and pork because of higher levels of proteins that bind to oxygen, haemoglobin and myoglobin in blood and muscle.

They recently said chicken had high levels of arsenic. Fish has high mercury levels.

Wtf protein are we supposed to eat then?

I give up.

Given a long enough timeline I'm going to die.. and seemingly everything causes cancer.

Yea, I mean...I'm going to enjoy my life. I don't eat much red meat (or processed) but I do enjoy steaks and things like sausages occasionally. Way it goes.We primarily cook with ground turkey, which is just the worst.

I've been told red meat feeds cancer cells so after chemo, I have to really cut down. I love a good steak. Before I start chemo hopefully finally next week, I'm going to Black Angus and order the porterhouse! The diet after chemo is basically no fried, processed, packaged, junk type foods. Even dairy need to be non fat or cut way down too.

Dr Ian Johnson, nutrition researcher and Emeritus Fellow, Institute of Food Research, said: “IARC has concluded that the evidence in favour of an association between processed meat consumption and cancer, probably because of the ingredients used in processing, meets their criteria for placing this class of foods on the list of recognised human carcinogens.

"It is important to emphasise however that this classification reflects the strength of the evidence for an effect, not the actual size of the risk.

"Meat consumption is probably one of many factors contributing to the high rates of bowel cancer seen in America, Western Europe and Australia, but the mechanism is poorly understood, and the effect is much smaller than, for example, that of cigarette smoking on the risk of lung cancer. It is also worth noting that there is little or no evidence that vegetarians in the UK have a lower risk of bowel cancer than meat-eaters.”

Speaking before the report was published, he pointed out that cigarette smoking increases the risk of lung cancer around 20 fold.
Huh?

The asian diet is what they look at to follow as that population has one of the lowest incidence of cancer, at least breast cancer. Coincidence that their diet doesn't have much red meat and no processed stuff?

It's what the animal is eating. For chicken buy only organic. Beef, organic only and grass fed. Fish, wild caught and not farmed.

Current NHS advice is to limit intake of all meats, including those which are processed, to 70g a day.The new advice from WHO suggests 50g of processed meat is enough to significantly raise bowel cancer risk, by 18 per cent.
Who the #### measures their meat in grams?

I measure it in inches.

Just wait until Fukushima skews the stats.

I will say though I'd rather take my chances with recurrence elsewhere (my #s are very high for this) than to go vegan. Quality of life has to play a role in your overall health too.

Soybeans. Just eat soybeans. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight snack, ####### soybeans, soybeans, soybeans, soybeans. Boom, no cancer.

Me too.
Why are you measuring his meat?
Don't want him to get cancer!

Best of luck with the chemo. I hope it is as side effect free as possible.

Thank you. Your father is in my thoughts as well. Praying for a good outcome. X

Google recurrence of cancer using keto cycling. Discuss with doctor. And good luck.

Interesting. Never heard of this. Thanks.

The few articles I read this morning emphasized that the WHO was adamant that it's not nearly as bad as cigarettes (which seems obvious).

It's an 18% increase in a very small risk rate.
