ProFootballFocus Stats Question (1 Viewer)

I've read their site for a while now and love what they do.

But something was pointed out by a Bills beat writer on Twitter (or rather posed to them as a question) and now it's bugging me.

How in the world do they have grades for all the players from yesterday already when the All-22 wasn't even out yet?

It doesn't seem possible to actually grade secondary players without it. The broadcast tape simply doesn't show enough of each play. It doesn't seem like there's any way that their grades could possibly be accurate based on the broadcast tape.

Do they get early access to the All-22 somehow, or should we be questioning their grades?

I already started to question their grading last year a bit as it seemed like their predictions and previous grades tended to influence their future grading. Whatever narrative they created, their grading seemed to skew that way a bit.

Don't know, but would the new next gen stats stuff they have available in Windows 10 and Xbox One show additional views that could be used? I haven't seen it yet beyond glimpses in broadcasts.

Mentioned in this article, says it has the location/speed info on every player on every play via chips in their pads, but don't know what it includes in the way of video. They use it with video on the broadcasts but don't know if that's just the broadcast creating it, or part of the normal package.

I'm not certain that they use all-22 video.

Last year they were hiring and I applied. They asked me to take a college tape and record formation and who was on field for each play (maybe other stuff too, I forget), but it wasn't all-22 video. I had a planned vacation that aligned with their "trial employment" period so I didn't get to finish. So i'm not sure if that's the process for NFL too.

I don't know but I bought a subscription for the Premium Stats last season for the first time and loved it.

A few days ago I got this email:

We are really excited about the new changes we’ve made to our website! As a part of those changes, we made our grading system much easier to compare players by converting our grades into PFF Ratings, which are presented on a 0-100 scale. PFF Ratings are the product of 96,000 hours of grading tape and tell you exactly how good every player in the NFL is at a given time. We update these PFF Ratings every week.

These are the same grades used by 19 NFL teams to assess performance.

Launching in the next several weeks, PFF Ratings will be available for purchase in both lists and an impressive depth chart tool. These depth charts allow you to quickly assess match-ups and teams’ strengths/weaknesses. You will also have the ability to navigate and rank players both by position and team.

As a part of these changes, beginning September 10, 2015, we will no longer provide new subscriptions or renewals to the Premium Statistics. You will continue to have access to Premium Statistics until your subscription period ends. If your subscription expires before the end of October you will continue to have access through October 31, 2015 at no additional charge.

PFF Ratings will be available soon, and we will be giving them to you for free for the duration of your Premium Statistics subscription.

If you are interesting in using Premium Statistics for commercial purposes, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at contact@profootballfocus.com. We will get back to you promptly.
This is on their subscription page.

My Premium Stats subcription expires 10/1/15. I'm not really clear on the difference between the Premium Stats and the PFF Ratings or the cost. Anyone know?

you'll only get a 1-100 grade for players from then on

paying for pff gold is now paying for fantasy advise from a site that's not fantasy centric

they're more interested in those 20-30k corporate subscriptions now.

sucks, real loss for the inquisitive football fan

I'm not going to get their Fantasy Subscription. I'll buy a PFF Ratings Subscription once it becomes available unless there's a significant cost increase from the Premium Stats subscription.

Case in point this week: Anyone that watched the Eagles/Cowboys this week saw the Cowboys absolutely dominate the Eagles up the middle. And yet, PFF gave both OGs for Philly positive grades this week. Those rankings make zero sense.

You aren't the only one. I have questioned their grades for awhile now and heard others do the same. Ask yourself this, if Evan Mathis was as dominant an OG as PFF says he is year after year would he have had that much trouble finding a job and had to take a big salary cut? I don't think the NFL agrees with their rankings either. All it would have taken is one team in the league to agree with them.

Well, I'm officially done going to PFF. They have Aaron Rodgers a negative grade for last night's game. No reason to waste time at a site when their grading system is that messed up.

ETA: They're getting absolutely hammered for it too. Deservedly

I really dislike PFF's redesign this year. More "listicles" and daily fantasy pollution that seems to have infected every site except for Football Outsiders.

The player ratings are just information. I find them useful for linemen and other positions without many box score stats, and for players who don't get many snaps. I don't need a rating to know how well Rodgers played last night.

However, the PFF stats which break down performance vs. pressure (from left, middle, right) etc. and other very specific game situations are cool. Seems they are drifting away from that, who knows.

So you don't get access to the advanced stats anymore?
Nope. Way more than their stupid Rodgers score, that's going to kill the site. Hopefully whom ever is paying them whatever it is to keep that stuff a secret is paying a ton. What they are offering the general public now appears to be total nonsense.

If you already have a subscription, you still have access to the premium stats until it expires. After that, you're out of luck. They're no longer selling new subscriptions to access them.

The only thing they're selling going forward is player grades on a 0-100 scale. Basically, Madden Ratings. Unless you want to pony up five figures for a corporate account, of course.

Wow, I didn't realize that. I pay for the advance stats (not the fantasy package) and it has nothing to do with the player grades. I literally never look at those.

That's terrible.

I'm seriously bummed out about this. Even with the flaws I loved the site. My subscription expired 10/1. Despite the email I pasted above stating I'd have access through the end of the month, I'm now completely blocked out.

I was thinking about getting their new PFF Ratings Subscription but that's still not available. So I guess there's nothing for me now.

McCown threw for a Browns record 457 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs and completed 70% of his passes. And according to a tweet from Greg Cossell, PFF gave him a horrible grade this week. :lmao:

If they were just quoting box scores then there wouldn't be any service for them to provide.

Their player ratings are flawed. I get what they're trying to do and that it's not all stats, but when Ryan Tannehill is your highest rated QB in 2014, whatever you're doing, I don't have much use for it.

PFF's advanced stats were awesome. I was using them to look up which QBs did better under pressure, which QBs had the best deep ball accuracy, who had the best yards per route run, what the pass/run ratios were for certain RBs in a RBBC, how certain coaches would split up the backfield workload by historical week by week snap count data, ect ect. Absolutely invaluable resource for fantasy if you like to do your own analysis of data like myself. Glad I could use it to learn some things on coaching tendencies before the subscription expired.
