Proposed Legislation Thread: Now Up - Support (or lack thereof) for our Troops regarding "Burn Pit" legislation (1 Viewer)

The vote is Monday. Until then it’s all political theatre

There was a vote yesterday. The legislation could be on the president's desk today and the money in the hands of our long-suffering veterans that much sooner. And none of your partisan posturing changes that.

Yeah, it's probably true that the GOP will change course on Monday after a weekend of political blowback. But it's also probably true that if it was not for the political blowback they'd have no reason to revisit the vote.

The Senate could have approved the funding for veterans yesterday. But they didn't, because the GOP decided to block it because the Dems' reconciliation bill hurt their fee-fees.  End of analysis.

If we don't get angry over #### like this then it will be another 10 years until these cowards bring this up again. This has been making the rounds for way too long and for it to be right there, at the tip of their fingers - only to be yanked away because some republicans are mad at a separate bill - is something that we should all be outraged over. But hey, you keep on providing cover for these guys if that makes you happy.
If it goes down screw em all.

I don’t have any guys. Both parties are pretty much the same to me. Boofsidez looking out for their pet pork projects . Meet the new boss , same as the old boss

The objection is it shifts about $390Bn a year to mandatory spending instead of having it be an annual appropriation. Would they prefer Vets come back hat in hand every year and request their health care benefits continue to be funded?

This isn't complicated. You broke it, you bought it.

The U.S. military caused millions of Veterans to be exposed to toxic burn pits for decades in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. They didn't have a choice. They couldn't opt out. They had to breath that crap in every day and it's caused a myriad of health care issues. All that is being asked is for the government to acknowledge veterans who served near burn pits were indeed exposed to airborne toxins.

Everybody has summed up my feelings on the Republicans who didn't vote for this (embarrassing to say the absolute least).  But I wanted to focus on one other part of this.  390 Billion a year - damn that is a lot of money.  I mean, we should absolutely spend whatever it takes to take care of our vets but am I crazy in thinking that seems like an insane amount?

Except in this instance, we’re talking about veterans’ health, not “pet pork projects.” I guess when you’re conceding that your team is terrible (in this instance), the only possible defense is that both teams are terrible. But that doesn’t invalidate the outrage here which is absolutely warranted.

While the flip-flopping that will likely occur on Monday will be welcome and ultimately a good result, it will be interesting to see the names of those Senators who voted for, then voted against, and then voted for, and the explanations they offer.

Not positive, but I think that’s over ten years, not per year.

I suspect most of the explanations will be "no comment".

Correct. It is over 10 years

Some of these bozos that voted against it were co-sponsors of the bill, including Cruz and Cornyn.   So they'll campaign claiming how they introduced legislation to help veterans.

They just won't mention that they voted against actually helping veterans.

Cruz may be the sleaziest politician of my lifetime.

I just learned that one of the provisions tucked in the Schumer-Manchin deal would allow auto-filing of most simple tax returns. If that gets included in the final bill, it would be one of those seemingly small changes that has a huge impact on people's lives (and also be a major political winner for Dems).

Wow a good thread and I missed it(or it should be havnt read anything yet)about freaking time they addressed burn pit issue.

Maybe someday they will address the hep c issue. Thousands of vets have it thanks to those Air injectors.

While I agree with this sentiment in general, it does NOT apply here.

Though, you aren't fooling anyone with this shtick unless you're fooling everyone with the other shtick.

shouldn’t be a defense at all, but here we are

Kind of got a little "Missionary Ridge" vibe at the moment.  Thomas' army seizes some rifle pits at the base of a key ridge in a minor tactical maneuver, then unexpectedly charges straight uphill in the most goosebumps moment of the Civil War and runs the Rebs right off the ridgeline.  Breaking the Union out of a grinding siege, avenging Chickamauga (Union soldiers CAN fight!), setting up the long campaign leading to Atlanta, its capture, and the re-election of Lincoln.  A reverberating change in tone arising from a minor "procedural" matter.

The D's are looking likely to charge right up that ridge, pass the Inflation Reduction Act, and reap rewards they didn't even anticipate.  When word leaked, the R's made a rare mistake.  They have made few mistakes lately.  They threw a fit, and voted down the nearest bipartisan bill they could find with snarling vengefulness reminiscent of a Putin.  When their moment of madness passed they saw to their horror that the popular veteran heath care bill was lying in blood on the ground, under their heel, and everyone was frowning at them.  Now they get to spend the weekend contemplating the fact that in a few days they will surely have to pass it anyway.  And now they are angry at McConnell for getting snookered.  Defeat and disunity taste nasty.

On the other hand, the D's have had a miserable year.  McClellan vs Lee bad.  But suddenly, at the end of the summer and leading into election season, a few green shoots are emerging.  They will claim legislative progress on guns, environment, inflation, and veteran health care.  The stock market has found its feet, consumer spending is stable, and inflation should begin to abate.  Most importantly, a feeling of relentless, remorseless losing will have been lifted.  Who knows what the yield will be?  Dot, dot dot.

Of course, they actually have to pass the IRA...

Thank you for your time.  I'm just riffing - not trying to anger anyone.

You’re a good dude HT but this post is too forthright. I prefer the old HT, the guy with love for GG and Father Trump.

It’s $667Bn. One piece is $277Bn and the other part is $390Bn. On a train rn, forget what the different pieces accomplished. I know they’re building 31 new medical centers.

But let’s do some back of the napkin math anyway just to ballpark it.

3.5M affected Veterans rn.

More will be added but that’s the registry as it stands today.

$390Bn / 3.5M = $111K

over ten years so move the decimal

$11K annually per veteran, on average

23 presumptive conditions:

Currently, there are only three presumptive conditions for burn pits (asthma, rhinitis, and sinusitis). The PACT Act will add 23 more presumptive conditions, and most importantly, the new list will include those with respiratory-based cancers. The PACT Act will add the following to the list of presumptive conditions: head cancer of any type, neck cancer of any type, respiratory cancer of any type, gastrointestinal cancer of any type, reproductive cancer of any type, lymphoma cancer of any type, lymphomatic cancer of any type, kidney cancer, brain cancer, melanoma, granulomatous disease (disorder associated with white blood cells), and any other disease the Secretary determines is warranted based on a positive association with certain substances, chemical, or airborne hazard.

(we’re missing a few & I don’t have time to look rn)

The question was: does $11K per Veteran per year too much / high?

I’m a bit biased but I’ll go with no.

Man this just bows me up. Always the same with these politicians Vets come last unless there is a good photo op.

This just reinforces my new voting sop. If you held federal office in any form as of 1/2022 you won't get my vote. What a bunch of Richard's.

Rubio voted yes but would he if he wasn't up for re-election?

In this case it seems your justified anger rests with Republican’s in the Senate who are butthurt that the Dems passed something.

Just wrote Scott an e-mail not that he will read it or care. Stated that I had voted for him 3 times in the past but he would never receive another vote from me. I also stated that as a Vet he should be ashamed of himself for using his brothers and sisters as pawns in political shenanigans.

Wonder if I made a list.

I think we offset each other ;) , but thank you for writing to him and expressing your displeasure.

Toomey is climbing the rankings of sleaziness. Ted Cruz better watch out

Toomey, during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” called Stewart a “pseudo-celebrity” and accused the bill’s Democratic backers of “the oldest trick in Washington.”

“People take a sympathetic group of Americans — and it could be children with an illness, it could be victims of crime, it could be veterans who’ve been exposed to toxic chemicals — craft a bill to address their problems, and then sneak in something completely unrelated that they know could never pass on its own, and dare Republicans to do anything about it,” Toomey said.

Toomey insisted that Republicans don’t oppose the bill itself, but are worried about Democrats using it to acquire funds for unrelated matters.

“Republicans are not opposed to any of the substance of the PACT Act,” he said. “What I’m trying to do is change a government accounting methodology that is designed to allow our Democratic colleagues to go on an unrelated $400 billion spending spree.”
