Props out to Mad Cow (1 Viewer)

MC,

I've never worn sunglasses regularly because the bridge of my nose is extremely wide and rigid...so that when i wear any sort of glasses it results in the frame tilting up at a 10 degree angle or so, resulting in me looking constantly surprised. Im a fairly thin guy, and my head and nose is reasonably sized; its just the wide bridge thats an issue.

Is this something that is common, and is there a way to deal with it? Any retailers that make glasses for the wide-nosed individual?
Hmmm, if you cannot find a good plastic frame with a wider bridge, then you may try the Maui Jim polycarbonate sport line. They have a little wider bridge with some adjustability that might fit the bill.

Mad Cow-

A while back you quoted me some Maui Jim South Shore sun glasses. Been a while, so can you shoot me an up to date quote when you get a chance?

Also, do you still not carry Oakley? I really like the Oakley Whisker glasses too. Figured I would double check.
Sending PM now.
MC-Thanks for the quote.

What are the selling points for the Maui Jim's? Trying to decide between them and the Oakley's.
The lenses for Mj are just without equal. The clarity and comfort of a polarized MJ lens is just something you can feel and once you have one, you just never go back to other stuff. It may not have the flashy O on the side, but you will find more people wearing MJ's once they are professionals and care about the lens quality than Oakley, IMO. Their poly sport line brings plenty of fun styles to the table, as well.

Some thread necromancy here. My last pair of Rx sunglasses went up in smoke (literally) so I'm looking for another pair.

MC, what can I expect for Rx Sunglasses? I was looking at the MJ website and the Shoreline 114-02 is something I'd be interested in.

With the MC discount and Rx lenses, what am I looking at?

Also I asked this a while back but just to check again, I still have a thing for the Mosley Tribes Aviatrix sunglasses (Oliver Peoples brand) but I can't find a place that will do them with Rx lenses. Just wanted to be sure you're still not working with these guys.

Finally, what are your thoughts on LensCrafters? I liked the service I got from them the last time I bought but I couldn't help but feel like I was overpaying.

For the Rx suns, are we talking about single vision, or a bifocal of some sort? Shoot me a PM with your Rx and if you prefer the glass or polycarbonate lenses (poly will be a fair amount lighter but will scratch more than glass) and I can get you the discount price.Yeah, you pay a pretty hefty premium to get lenses at Lenscrafters. For a set of polycarb lenses, you will pay DOUBLE to get them there vs my office, and if you need to use their warranty, you actually have to pay a lot more than the lenses actually cost, so they make a ton on warranty jobs, as well. They job ya pretty well, overall.

MC, I managed to scratch one of the lenses on the pair of Bolle Swisher's I bought from you a few years ago. I'm looking to replace them with a comparable pair, mainly to wear while playing softball. I would prefer a bronze or amber lens in a lightweight non metal frame. Any suggestions?

FYI - While I have not been doing any Ray-Ban business, there are 2 interesting developments:

1. I am going to liquidate my remaining Ray-Bans at below the normal FBG price. If anyone is interested, let me know. I am doing this in-store and will extend it to FBG's. If there is a style you like, let me know and I will see if I have it.

2. I am going to be a Smith distributor to make up for losing Ray-Ban, so I lose a PITA company and gain a great line. I know I have had inquiries about Smith before. I should be set up ready to roll in a week or so.

Let me know when the Smiths are in. I love things so I'll have to get down on a new pair when you have them!

Thanks MC. Going to have to put this off for a few months to see how the job situation shakes out.

Mad Cow, do you have any Ray Bans left. I sat on mine over the weekend and am in the market. Not sure what style they were, though. Let me know. Thanks.

I have plenty of Ray-Bans left and would be willing to part with them for less than the standard FBG price. I am leaving town to go to Ohio through Tuesday but will be happy to list what I have when I get back. Or a bit later if I have time.

Hey Mad Cow...can you PM me or reply with your price for some Maui Jim "Peahi's" in Burgundy Tortoise frame w/HCL Bronze lens?

Also, do you handle Vuarnet, or will I have to wait 'til I get to France again?

Generally, find something that you like and I will see if I can get it. I can do Maui Jim and Costa del Mar, along with many designer ones like Dior, Gucci, etc.

Hey Mad Cow, what are the prices on the Maui Jim reader sunglasses? I saw them at my regular optical shop but didn't get a price. You have any customers who've used them?

Honestly, I have not even had the rep mention them at all in a long time and they are not in the catalog. I have to wonder if they are being phased out. If you are interested, I can look into it, but I have not had anyone try them.

Huh. From what I gathered, they were new. They are basically sunglasses with an insert like drug store reading glasses, not a specific prescription. So they were sort of bi-focal, but not entirely like Invisiline.Anyway, I was more curious than anything.

Can you get Oakleys?
No but MJ's are better anyway. :)
I love my MJ's (Ka'anapali)... but they are breaking at the bridge again.
Huh. I don't have the Ka'anapali, but I was thinking about going that direction, as mine are developing a crack in the lens that extends out from the screw. I think they're the Ho'okipa, but I've had them for so long I can't recall exactly. They're similar if that's not exactly what they are.

I sent back my first pair for repair of the same crack. They replaced them but it's happening again. I think it's because since I can't hang them from my shirt when I'm not wearing them (due to the hingeless design), I have to put them on my fat melon... which puts a strain on the bridge. I love the glasses, but I will steer clear of that design from here on out.

Dear Mad Cow,

I wanted to inquire about some Ray Ban aviators... maybe RB3293, but it's tough to tell from the RB web site.

Thanks.

I will make a list of the suns I have, model number, color and FBG price, but don't want to take the time to look up all the links. Google is good for that.

Nah, they have been out for a few years. I remember the rep asking me if I wanted to carry them at least 2 years ago. If you are interested, let me know and I will contact the rep and find out.

Hmm, I have had mine for about 8 years now and not had too much problem. They would probably fix them again, but there are a lot of the polycarbonate sport line (400 and 500 series) that might fit the bill. 409 is pretty popular.

I will post what I have for Ray-Ban here shortly instead of replying to all the PM's. If I get time I will find some links.

19 pair of Ray-Ban, 1 pair Arnette. Gonna take a bit to post, but there are some great pieces in here. Maybe even an Otis-esque piece or 2.

Did you e-mail them to let them know what happened or just mail them back and assume they'd figure it out. Write a letter? How'd you handle it? I'm thinking I'll be sending in my Ho'okipa to have them repair them.

OK, here is the format - I will give the style, color code, basic infor, MSRP then FBG price shipped. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

All have RB prefixes on the styles so I am gonna go ahead and skip that. Gonna use F for frame and L for lens about halfway through, as well.

4078 642/57 Tortoise frame, Brown polar lens, $149, $110

4093 642/57 Tort frame, brown polar lens, $179, $130

3343 014/57 Brown frame, brown polar lens, $189, $135

3025 Aviator 004/41 Light adaptive lens, $159, $115

4069 642/57 Tort/Brown polar lens, $159, $115

3194 004/9A Gunmetal frame, Gray polar lens, $159, $115

3218 004/48 Silver F, Gray L, $169, $120

3176 Flight 014/47 Brown F, Brown polar L, $169, $120

3119 Olympia 006/48 Black F, Gray polar L, $159, $115

3198 004/81 Silver F, Gray polar L, $159, $115

3198 New Sleek 014 Brown F, Brown L, $109, $80

3298 012/57 Brown F, Brown Polar L, $169, $120

4089 710/57 Tortoise F, Brown polar L, $159, $115

4096 660 Burgundy F, Gray G-15 glass lens, $119, $88

2016 Daddy-O W2578 Black F, Gray glass G-15 lens, $129, $95

3175 Flight 014/47 Brown F, Brown Polar lens, $179, $130

3296 004/13 Brown gradient shield style sun, pretty cool looking, $119, $88

3269 005/41 Gunmetal F, Light adaptive L, $159, $115

2030 W2175 Black F, Gray glass G-15 lens, $109, $80

Lastly, an Arnette that is still here. Nomad 127-6748 Tortoise F, Brown polar L. I want this bad boy gone. $89 MSRP. $40 shipped

Now it will go is this - post here the one you want and then send me a PM. That way, I don't get 3 PM's about the same frame since you can see if someone wanted it. I can then arrange all the rest. If not, I am just gonna blow these all out in the next month or so at my office.

Enjoy.

I am going to throw that list in its own thread. Please respond in that thread if you want any.

Called to find out the process... sent them in with a letter and a check for $8.95 (iirc) return shipping. They sent back a new pair.

Just a moment of self-promotion. I am now a Smith dealer. Same deal for Smith as with the rest. I am fairly impressed with some of their stuff.

By comparison, I would say the MJ lenses for frills are better - their Anti-reflective coatings, etc. However, the lens technology for the Smith lenses to reduce distortion is better on that end.

Smith has a lot of great interchangeable lens systems. I am going to be ordering myself a pair.

With that, Mad Cow's FBG discount also applies to all Smith suns/goggles/gear.

Enjoy if you care to.
