PS4 sound help needed (1 Viewer)

My bro in law got a ps4 for his birthday this weekend. Hooked it up, plugged it in, signed up, popped in MLB the Show 15. The sound wouldn't work. Menu music and sounds worked in ps4 environment but when he started game it was all staticky/crackled. You could tell it was the sounds of the game because of timing, but you couldn't understand a thing. He ran and bought an optical cable to hook to soundbar since he'd us that anyway. Now, he has menu music and sound through bar, but when he starts game (has tried MLB and The Last of Us) he gets no sound. Then when he backs out of game to PS4 menus he doesn't even have menu music and sounds anymore. Can anyone help????

In the PS4 menu system you have to specfically choose Optical. Double check that that is set before you do anything else

Got to

settings -> sound and screen -> audio output settings

To select your audio output choice

Also, try other discs (dvds, blu rays) to see if you have a system problem or a disc problem.

That setting is correct. Like I said, he initially gets menu music. It's strange...I'm stumped.

Does he have it hooked up to the internet? Maybe it needs a software update?

Yes, it updated when he first hooked it up. That would have automatically been the latest update, right?

I'd assume so. Doesn't hurt to check again. My PS4 used to have an issue where if I turned it on before switching to it's output on my TV the sound wouldn't work. Finally an update went out where it fixed this issue.

Is it a disc? Have you tried other discs? Blu-Ray/CD/etc? If it's a download I'd delete it and download it again.
