PSA: DVDFab domains seized, AnyDVD could be next (1 Viewer)

I thought about posting this in one of the many cable-cutting/HTPC threads, but it might not get noticed:

DVDFab domains seized.

Knowing how creative these companies can get, it's possible/likely they'll find a way to spring to life again.

That said, if you were contemplating the purchase of software like this (e.g. AnyDVD, which I use), or even updating to the latest version of your existing software, best to do it now.

This software was instrumental in allowing me to put my DVD and BD collection on my home media server, for easy library-like access using XBMC. Got the lifetime subscription, and worth every penny.

Looks like DVDFab moved to dvdfab.cn. I know they aren't in the US so it should be interesting to see if any of the seizures are enforced in whatever country they are in.

The article talks about US credit card companies and PayPal being forbidden for processing payments for DVDFab as well. So even though they've offshored their site, they will also need to find a way to accept payment.

Does the program have auto update? Any risk to attempted connections to the seized domains being monitored?

Is DVD ripping software illegal? You should be able to rip your own dvds to digital copies, no?
Stripping the copy protection from BDs/DVDs is illegal. But if the government is going to come after me for putting my own movies on my home server for easier access, so be it.

Note that the government doesn't even go after people that share movies on Torrents. Sometimes the movie studios hire law firms to do that (and extract "payment" to avoid a threatened-but-never-pursued lawsuit) but the odds of that happening to you are less than that of being hit by lightning.

I imagine that they will change their Paypal address as it gets shut down similar to the way those knockoff jersey sites operate. Western Union will likely be an option as well.

Also, I have a lifetime license for DVDFab and was able to update to the latest version this morning, the program had the .cn address so things seem to be seamless so far.
