Public Schools are getting worse (1 Viewer)

We had a lot of very angry parents when the new phone policy was announced in August.
Ridiculous parenting here
It was a small but vocal amount. Mostly out of fear that if there was a school shooting their kids would be cut off from their phones. I think we had reasonable answers to those points but you know how are some people are. I would say 90+ % were in favor or strongly in favor of.

Our schools do not allow phones or similar devices and request that parents don't provide them to their kids until at least 13.

(And we are heavily AI and tech forward btw. Learning science is clear...smart phones are bad for learning)

Our kids are responsible phone users, have busy after school schedules that often requires mid-day-of coordination and also use their phones in school for school stuff...art and music.

All of that is out now because our school felt some of the kids aren't responsible phone users whose parents couldnt figure out how to help their kids reel it back in- which we feel is "ridiculous parenting". So yes, we are against it. My son started college this year and a parent asked at a new student info session if phones were banned...administration had a very curt "no, of course not" answer. For me- it should be banned in the classroom, unless used as a tool, but otherwise accessible outside of the classroom instead of being locked up all day as ours is now.

Not a you thing, but there are plenty of parents that think their kids are responsible phone users who may be a little less responsible than they should be. I know it sucks having to figure out mid day coordination stuff but we all survived for years figuring that **** out without phones. Also it is way too difficult for teachers to have to police students differently and a much easier to blanket approach things like this

Absolutely. Put your bag in the pouch... No looking or access during class- but able to he checked inbetween classes. Our school has the kid lock their school provided pouches so now anything that pops up...and my daughter has booked acting jobs last minute a number of times (which is its own ridiculous thing- who works like that!?) that now makes her unavailable because little Skippy and his parents cant handle not looking at their phones enough to be responsible.

By little Skippy, I am talking about 2/3 of the school. Hardly any of the kids had self control enough. Also the kids have their Chromebooks. They can email and conduct business. One of the benefits I've noticed too is slightly better teacher-student relationships because we aren't so heavily having to be the phone police nagging kids over and over.

This statement sounds reasonable, but it's uneducated. If you saw what we see in the hallways every day you would have a different opinion.

Further, asking a kid not to keep their phone in their pocket isn't reasonable. It's going to be in the pocket, and they are constantly being called to look at it. When this is allowed, the number of kids that ask to leave class (so they can get their phone fix in) is off the charts.

If someone doesn't have experience dealing with an addict, I fully get the misconceptions. What we're talking about here is an ADDICTION. I don't blame a kid for being an addict. They didn't give the phone to themselves. They didn't create the world they are living in, they're just trying to navigate the world we adults handed to them.

.and my daughter has booked acting jobs last minute a number of times (which is its own ridiculous thing- who works like that!?) that now makes her unavailable because little Skippy and his parents cant handle not looking at their phones enough to be responsible.
why can't you call the school office and pull her out of class? Seems like it wouldn't be much different than sending her a text. i wouldn't think that should stop the opportunity as there is a way to contact her if need be.

It's the right question... and mom has the answers. all I remember was that it wasn't an option- perhaps because leaving school for a "job" isnt necessarily encouraged.

I know the schools frown upon it and have threatened us here that you cannot take kids out for vacation or Disneyland or whatever. Only sickness and doctor's appointments are authorized absences. So we just always call them sick if it's a full day or dr's appt if it has to happen midday.

When the LA Kings were in their Cup runs we had to leave our house around 1:30pm to get down to the game on time. So we would call in and say kid has a Dr's Appt and we have to pick them up at 1pm. Worked every time...hahaha

That is odd, if a parent calls to pull take their kid home, we don't even ask why. Not our business really. We won't ask unless it becomes habitual or problematic.

I don't know either. But when you call in to say your kid is going to miss a day or needs to leave early they always ask for a reason.

That would drive me up the wall if our school did that.

We are just happy someone called. Most of the absences in our school go unexcused because parents don’t bother to call in.
