Punt and Kickoff Returners '08 (2 Viewers)

Didn't realize there was a thread for this, I posted this in the Falcons thread.

Role expanding for Falcons WR Douglas

Sources in Atlanta don’t expect the Falcons to change a whole lot during their bye week. Things are going far better than anyone expected and there’s not much of a need to tweak lineups on offense and defense. However, there could be a change made on punt returns, the way we hear it. Adam Jennings has handled the duties thus far, but he’s gaining just 6.8 yards per return, which left the Falcons ranked 25th in the league as they headed into their bye week. Jennings also has muffed two returns, which is tied for a league high. Word is rookie WR Harry Douglas will get more looks at the position and he’s being groomed to eventually take over full time. Douglas has made his mark as a receiver and ballcarrier on reverse plays this season, but scouts envisioned him as a punt returner, as well, when he left Louisville.

I can't find any other links to this, but will post here if I do.

Any thoughts why Slater took a KR away from Hobbs last night?
I don't remember the sequence of events, but at one point hobbs was a little hobbled, so maybe that's why.

I noticed that A. Rossum injured his groin and Delanie Walker returned the kicks after that. Any update on the extent of Rossums injury would be appreciated. Also, what are the chances that Walker keeps the KR duties if Rossum is out for a while. Having a TE that returns kicks would really help in our league.

Probably pretty good. There haven't been another player returning since Rossum. The only other person I can think of doing it would be Michael Robinson. Considering how much the Niners get scored on, I'd keep an eye on Walker. With the lack of valuable TE's in this league, he'll be something special. Especially if the niners ever plan on benching Vernon Davis because Walker is the better receiver.

Now its probably a good time to reroster Ginn. He's been averaging about 4-5 receptions per game lately and has taken over kickoffs again. Also, he's playing Denver in week 9, so they're getting scored on and he might get a few receptions as well.
Where is this info of Ginn taking over kickoffs?Nevermind, I just looked it up on rotoworld.

Any thoughts on Higgins in Oak? Herman was correct that their regular return guy was back and stole a few looks, but Higgins was phenomenal back there. I am still looking at picking him up in my return league as soon as I get a roster space free (sometime after the Winslow situation is resolved so I can stop carrying two TEs)

My concern of course is which if them is more likely to be the KR guy as that is where the green is.

Branch only averaged only 15 yards a KReturn, Higgins was a beast. If anyone hears talk of putting Higgins back, please post.
I'm thinking about claiming Higgins as well...Fri, Oct 24 Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders WR Johnnie Lee Higgins was practicing with the kick return team this week and could return as the team's kick returner in Week 8. SS Tyvon Branch handled kick returns in Week 7.(KFFL)

"*Still no decision on if Tyvon Branch or Johnnie Lee Higgins would be the primary kickoff returner. Based on performance the nod should go to Higgins, who wasn't doing horribly in place of Branch."

from the sacramento bee yesterday.

Why in the Hell would Branch be returning kickoffs anyway??? Higgins has almost taken 5 back for 6 and averages 25.5 yards a return..Branch averages 14 yards a return?? These are the little things the Raiders keep doing year after year that makes you scrtch your head and wonder

Ginn finally having a good game receiving and he's doing kick returns as well. About time. I was able to pick him up after an impatient owner dumped him. If only I had played him. :goodposting:

Any word on Rossum, and who will be handling kicks for the 49ers? TIA

wooooo 131 yards from Ginn. He only got 32 yards from kickoffs but damn this has to be his breakout game.
Finished with 7 catches for 175 and 37 yds in returns.Scored 40.45 points in my return yardage league. And I started him!! :lmao:

Higgins

Dropped Higgins for Ginn after I found out that Higgins wasn't supposed to return any more and Ginn was.

Today it worked out fine for me, but it would have been nice to have kept both.

Ray Rice has been returning kickoffs for 2 weeks now and is probably only doing it until Figurs is back. He's also getting a lot of 3rd down touches and few receptions per game. I think he's a good bye week replacement and a handcuff for McGahee.

Breaston still doing punt returns though has 0 actual return yardage last 3 weeks.

Just when you get all hyped on Ginn, Bess will be back there again.

(The Parcells way)

(I am one of them inpatience owners gave up on him for Breaston!)

Though I play Washington and he also got me over 40 last week!

Return yardage plus normal scoring.

Ginn got every return for the last two weeks besides one, last week a lot of them got touchbacked. The one KO that he didn't get, was a muffed KO from bess and Ginn ended up recovering to it. I think the team was purposely avoiding Ginn.

Anyone know if Yamon Figurs is still out next week?
"Yamon is iffy. He’s got a chance to be back there. If Yamon is healthy, he’s going to be returning for us in some form or fashion. But we’re kind of excited about Ray [Rice] and we’re kind of excited about Jim [Leonhard]."- HC Jim Harbaugh

Anyone know if theres any value in Dantrell Savage KC if Jamaal Charles doesn't play? He'll be backing up Kolby Smith.

Strange he wasn't drafted, since he was a top 8 senior RB, but like Justin Forsett, the bias is against his size. The other thing to note about him is he's not a real creative runner, one cut and go.Nice job returning kickoffs of late, and he's one of two healthy bodies in K.C. this week, so I imagine we'll find out if he has value.

I heard Higgins ran a KR for a safety or something like that? Anyone know the details and if he is practicing with the KR team this week?

What is the word from TB? Is Clifton Smith replacing Jackson on KR/PR for good?
This was posted in a TB thread. It doesn't necessarily answer your question, but it is semi-related..."I like that. A lot of guys go backwards, and I'm not saying Dexter [Jackson] did or does, but I'm just saying that a lot of guys retreat and go the other way because no one is there. You go forward then everybody is coming at you. It's not a job that everybody is after. There aren't a lot of guys that want to return punts and kicks in the NFL. We're down there on the sidelines and I stand behind players. It's a bizarre scene. Guys are flying down there. It's not for everybody. It takes experience, and you have to acquire the experience. Some of the great returners struggled in their first and second years in this league. We're going to keep working with Dexter, but we do like the decisiveness that Clifton shows and we think he has promise."

- HC Jon Gruden on Clifton Smith's knack for running straight ahead on returns

259 return yards and a TD yesterday. Guess I have my answer! Good news is I picked him up last week and dropped Jackson. Bad news is I didn't play him in my league where he got 30+ points.

This happened at the Oakland game. Douglas was back for most of them, although Finneran was back for one, for some inexplicable reason. He didn't set the world on fire, though. 2 returns for 13 yards, and several short ones he didn't attempt to field. This was his first NFL punt returning experience tho, so can't judge him yet. No word for sure, but I'd expect him to be returning next week as well.
