Punt and Kickoff Returners 2010 (1 Viewer)

A nice article put out by rotoworld a couple of days ago

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/...=36073&pg=1
The Bills have been tight-lipped about their plans, but NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora reported a couple weeks ago that Spiller would be the primary option on both kickoffs and punts. The explosive rookie returned eight kicks for scores at Clemson. ... The Bills do have premier alternatives in McKelvin and Parrish, so they may opt to give Spiller a rest on occasion -- especially if he's filling a starring role on offense. As long as he stays on returns, Spiller is a low-end RB1 in return-yardage leagues.

Confirmation that Percy Harvin will return kickoffs (and occasionally punts) for the Vikings:

Harvin back on returns

With Reynaud gone, Percy Harvin will return to his kickoff return role and also could factor down on the line on punt returns, although Bernard Berrian and Greg Camarillo are expected to handle those duties in Thursday's opener at New Orleans.

Harvin missed most of camp and played in only one preseason game while grieving the death of a grandmother and battling migraine headaches. He continued to express optimism on Sunday that the team and doctors have gotten the migraine situation under control by limiting his stress and examining his diet, down to certain types of salt in the foods he eats.

"I ran all the plays with the ones (Sunday)," Harvin said. "Feel good. I work on my own sometimes as far as conditioning-wise. So, I feel great flying around (Sunday), and we'll see."
Dude just became a monster in return yardage leagues.

Anyone hear anything about the St. Louis return job? Still Amendola or will Mardy Gilyard get the job if Amendola is named a starter at WR?

"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued to make roster moves on Sunday to better their 53-man roster. After claiming running back Kregg Lumpkin off waivers from Green Bay, the Bucs released RB/KR Clifton Smith.

The 5-foot-9, 190-pound Smith has been a fan favorite around the Tampa Bay area since making the Pro Bowl as an undrafted free agent in 2008. Coach Morris said the decision to release Smith was a difficult one.

"That was a touch call," said Morris. "Obviously, one of the sentimental favorites. Obviously, one of those guys that you really have to negotiate with yourself and with what is going on, but with the emergence of a guy like Kareem Huggins, with the emergence of what a guy like Sammie (Stroughter) is able to do in the return game, with the emergence of a guy like (Micheal) Spurlock who is coming back, a guy like (Preston) Parker, and all those different type of returner guys that we have... he really was one of the guys that we had to make a tough decision on."

Even though he was the best return man on the Bucs' roster, Smith was never able to make an impact on the offensive side of ball as a running back. In his only preseason game, Smith had seven carries for a paltry three yards (0.4 avg.). Despite that, Morris believes Smith will find success with his next team.

"There is no doubt in my head that he will definitely be one of those guys to go stick somewhere else and find a way to get back here and do something that I am going to regret," said Morris. "I'm going to have to hug him at the end of the game - win, lose, or draw - because he is definitely one of those guys that you love and care about.""

Read somewhere else that Stroughter is expected to be used "situationally", while Spurlock gets the nod by default.

rumor is that amendola will keep some PR duties, but Gilyard will take KR as long as amendola is "starting".
wonder how that all changes now with the addition of Mark Clayton. my gut tells me that eventually Clayton and Robinson start outside, and Amendola moves back into the slot. I wonder if Gilyard will hang onto KR duties then.

Arenas will be in the elite club very soon. 4 preseason games, a big return in every single one of 'em. Best returner in NCAA history. Lots of opportunities at KRs after teams score and kick.
Correct me if I am wrong...isn't he slated to do both...KR and PR?? Also, how much playing time will he see on Def to make him an early IDP draft pick??

Both, yep. He's the nickelback, as expected (KC's 4th/5th CBs are horrible), so he should see a lot of PT. Not far off starter level with the sheer volume of 3+WR sets NFL offenses are using these days. I don't really know what to expect from him as far as tackle numbers go so I'm not much help with his IDP projections. He's 5'9" so I figure teams will target him early in the season and possibly thereafter if he doesn't hold up well.

Rookie CB Javier Arenas, KC (although rookie RB Dexter McCluster should also get some returns)

This seems like an impossible question to answer, but does anyone have an idea of how the KR duties will be divided between Arenas and McCluster? It seems like Arenas is being set up to be "the guy" for KR duty, but if you judge preseason returns, it looks closer to even.

Arenas all the way IMO. Preseason:WK1 -

Arenas: 3 KR, 28 ypr, 42 long (99-yard TD called back on unrelated holding)

McCluster: 0 returns

WK2-

Arenas: 1 KR, 54 yards

McCluster: 0 returns

WK3-

Arenas: 2 KR, 17 ypr; 5 PR, 7 ypr

McCluster: 3 KR, 37 ypr, long 41; 2 PR, 9 ypr

WK4-

Arenas: 0 KR; 2 PR, 23 ypr, 44 long

McCluster: 2 KR, 21 ypr

McCluster got worked in a little, but IMO that was just to get him some live game experience of returning at the NFL level. I liken this to the 8 carries they gave McCluster in the Philly game, mostly out of pro-style running formations. Just experience IMO.

Arenas broke multiple long returns and looked more natural doing it. McCluster is explosive, don't get me wrong, but I think it's Arenas' gig for now. Like Hester in Chicago, I think KC wants to use McCluster much more on offense. Arenas will play a lot on defense, but it's generally considered easier to do that and double-up on return duties.

Rookie WR Dez Bryant, Dal (although not until later in the year due to injury… possibly rookie CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah earlier in the year)
So, what are the odds that Dez is the primary returner in week 1? :shark:He practiced in full on Monday and was returning both punts and kicks in that practice. Without Crayton, he likely takes PR, but would they run him out there on KR's?I think the idea is that he's not really ready to be one of the starting 2 WR's, but can contribute on returns until then....if he can play, I wouldn't be surprised if he takes all the return duty for week 1 against the Redskins. I'm guessing 50/50 chance he is the full time returner this week.

So listening to Jim Rome Show today while at work, Josh Cribbs was the guest, he says he isnt returning at all?

I knew he got an extention and that he wanted to be more of a receiving role but really?

Does anyone see him not returning? (need to know, he was my flex in my return league)

Clifton Smith might be signing with the Packers, per his twitter.
He visited the Packers today. No word on a signing yet, but it looks like it could be headed that way.

Clifton is scheduled to visit Miami tomorrow to work out for the Dolphins, according to Rotoworld.

Wow that would be a HUGE swing in his value in return yardage leagues. A negative swing...

Hes always been a Special Teams player, I just dont see why he would give that up especially after getting a 3 year 20 million dollar contract, IDK if its him or Mangini.

Anyone confirm or deny this? I really dont wanna start Ochocinco against the pats lol.

wow. dude is the best returner on the planet. I don't see how they can take him remove him from that duty.

According to jimrome.com, here are the topics Cribbs and Rome dicussed today:Topics: 2010 NFL Season | His role evolving | Has tremendous responsibility this season with playing wideout and special teams | Miss being a gunner on special teams | Being physical as a wide receiver | Blowing people up on blocks will be new specialty | Still proving people wrong | New motivation | Off-season | Had faith I would be back in Cleveland | Browns fans | Win or lose; Cleveland fans still show | LeBron James leaving town | Getting off to a quick start this season | Jake Delhomme | Delhomme is very accurate and a great leader | Ndamukong Suh’s hit on Delhomme | We didn’t see the hit | Jake’s leadership | Eric Mangini | Mangini being able to relax | Team buying in | Players are so excited to start the season | Offensive packages | Have to bring my all |

Do you think maybe you confused Cribbs not playing gunner on special teams anymore for him not returning?

I might have thats why I came here, not gonna lie I was in and out of my car several times but he said pretty clearly, he wants to have a bigger role in the team and part of that is not returning anymore, Jim asked him if he was gonna miss returning and he said something to the effect of he has a blast running around and through people and that special teams is nothing like the rest of football.

Been looking everywhere online, Cleveland browns news, Cleveland sports news, fantasy sites, just no word at all, its killing me lol.

Clevelandbrowns.com still has him listed as starting kick and punt returner, so sorry if I worried anyone, even more sorry if he actually isnt returning.

Link: http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/depth-chart.html

Watched the slowest loading 6 minute video on the browns website where they interviewed cribbs, they didnt ask him a single question about special teams so of course he said nothing about it.

I don't buy that for a second. Cribbs does more for that offense on special teams than the offense does itself.

The Cribbs info is huge in my league considering we use return yards and he was one of the top fantasy players last year. Same person drafted him this year hoping he can repeat as champ, so no return duty would certainly be a huge blow to his team.

here's an older interview of cribbs:

Wiley went on to make reference to Coach Mangini's comments that Cribbs might not be returning kicks full-time this year, "Would you be ok with not being a kick returner?" Cribbs appeared startled as if he hadn't heard that news yet, "No, I have goals set, the NFL is all about 'what have you done for me lately?' Special Teams are what got me to where I am today."

I noticed that Spurlock was just named the returner for Sunday, is this a check back every week to see who's returning situation, or has he nailed the job down?

I recommend checking weekly for all teams, not just TB. Seriously. When "they" say "things change quickly in the NFL", they're probably thinking of returners first and foremost.

I asked Josh Cribbs via Twitter and got the following answer:

"@Chainz2007 not true"

So start him with confidence in your return yardage leagues. :)

For what it's worth....

Joshua Cribbs-WR- Browns Sep. 8 - 8:46 am et

Josh Cribbs won't cover kicks and punts this year for the first time in his five-year career.

The Browns really do appear serious about using Cribbs more as a pure wide receiver. However, he won't get enough targets there to warrant fantasy consideration in normal leagues, even with those extra Wildcat packages. Cribbs remains a real asset solely in return-yardage leagues.

When on Rome

During an appearance on Jim Rome’s national radio show Tuesday, Joshua Cribbs:

• Revealed that he won’t cover punts and kickoffs, a staple during his previous five years with the Browns. He said he is practicing with the second units.

• Said his “new motivation” is “to prove myself worthy of being a legit NFL wide receiver.”

• Endorsed quarterback Jake Delhomme, saying, “I didn’t know he is such a good quarterback. I just feel he is gonna take us to the next level.”

• Said “the package” that will feature him and Seneca Wallace will be “amazing.”

Bloom just twittered the following:

SigmundBloom

CLE @JoshCribbs16 on @jimrome - not cov. kicks/punts, wants to prove he's legit WR, package w/ him&Wallace "amazing" - http://bit.ly/bxmajQ

SigmundBloom

Don't sleep on Cribbs - he is one of the 3-5 most dangerous open field runners in the league, has been screaming out for more touches on O

1 minute ago via web

SigmundBloom

Don't rush out to pick him up this moment, but if CLE seems more willing to give him 12-15 touches a game on O, put on WW speed dial
There must be something to this. Chainz you asked Cribbs this:

I have read that you told Rome you won't be in the returning game this season. is that true? If so, who will take over?
So what about sharing the duty? That seems possible given Cribbs' quote on Rome and his twitter response. Involved, but not getting near 100% of return touches like last year.

Very interesting about Cribbs.

Got a quick question, does anyone know if P. Cox is taking over the starting KR and PR duties from Eddie Royal? I haven't found any confirmation and the depth charts still show Royal, but all of the news blurbs hint that Cox is taking over especially since he was the primary returner in the preseason games.

There's a difference between covering kicks and returning kicks. I can't imaging the Browns would not use that weapon for returns, and it makes perfect sense not to have him cover returns.
