That's a lot easier than answering the question!
Making baseless insults isn't a good way to have a conversation

Calling someone a racist, now twice, for having a feeling on patriotism is your opinion, which you're entitled to, I just have no reason to debate something that far off or continue.

well, they were insurrectionists and lost.. so... unless we're calling slavery a lost war and counting black americans as the enemy...
No, certainly not calling black Americans an enemy.  Just trying to see if there is a difference.

The raised fist, to many, simply resembles solidarity among the black community.  To others, including some within the black community, it is used as a symbol for black power.

The confederate flag is a symbol of oppression to a great many people.  To others, it is a symbol of heritage and not meant to be taken as a symbol for white power.

If a player raised a rebel flag the NFL (I'd think) would take immediate action.. and rightly so.

It seems whatever side you might take on this regarding how you feel about it, there are others who will find it offensive.  If it is offensive and has the potential to draw negative feelings towards your brand (e.g. the NFL), would/should you be criticized for removing it?

Kneeling is a peaceful way to protest and while it may offend some people, it doesn't give the impression that the person kneeling is displaying any type of race power.  A raised black power fist... or a raised tattoo of a confederate flag would give the impression of a type of race power.  I'm fine with the kneeling as protest but find that I'm not comfortable with the raised fist.  I was just trying to see if anyone else thought there was a difference.

This is an awful analogy, we aren't saluting one person. Doctor Detroit had a great quote last week about standing for something that is bigger than any one person, which I absolutely agree with.

I don't feel forced to stand, I do it out of respect and appreciation.
Then do it and let everyone else do what they want to do.  Why do you need everyone else to do it?

We don't need everyone to do it.   We are simplying pointing out he is being disrespectful.   Not so sure why that is so hard to understand.

The racism is right there below the surface, in much of what you say about these guys, and I'm sure even you know it.  We're seeing in this country (and others) right now just how widespread white racism still is, even in my own family, people I love and show respect and will continue to do so, but I feel comfortable enough waving that broad brush when I see people waving the flag with such.. sustained fervor, in a clear effort to drown out somebody's message.  Sure, of course by being so crass I'm the ####### here, but I'm also giving you the opportunity to prove me and others wrong.

There is no doubt racism still exists and probably always will yo some degree, but this is not about racism.  There are plenty of African Americans who see this as disrespectful.

Sorry, but I see you do this a lot. How many black Americans do you have evidence of who think what this dude is doing is disrespectful?

It's not all about racism but seeing as how that's his reason for doing it, why shouldn't it be part of the conversation?  This thread has been the same circle jerk for weeks!

I made a general accusation, and I'm sorry but from all I've seen from certain posters here and in other topics I don't think it's baseless

Help me help you. Exactly what doesn't make sense?

You think Rosa riding the bus or Ruby Bridges going to William Frantz Elementary School is the same stance against injustice as Kaep kneeling during the SSB?
i think there's a correct time and place for protest. certainly it should not be disrespectful or disruptive. it shouldn't interfere with my day to day. i certainly don't want to hear about it on the news. it should be peaceful and targeted to a very limited scope. it should involve people that i think have the proper gravitas. it should never be led by someone that doesn't have proper rebellious credentials.

there are, after all, rules in this country that specifically outline who can be outraged, by what, when and how they can express that outrage. we all would do well to remember that our troops fought and died for our right to be free to express our freedoms... in the appropriate manner, at the appropriate times, in the appropriate places.

like when a group of ex-law enforcement officers, who may or may not have been fired for incompetence or to protect the department from lawsuit, join with a group of former military members, who may or may not have been expelled from the military, to protest Obama's (who, i hope everyone knows is actually a foreign born Muslim.. at least the Venn diagram of these two groups is proof of that if you're too naive to understand it already) attempts to disarm Americans so that he can impose martial law.

they're doing it the right way. when they arm themselves with 11 guns, flak jackets, tasers, mace and drape themselves in American flag gear then march  through the farmer's market and point their guns at security guards and police who answer 911 calls.. they're clearly, honestly, obviously exercising their right to protest this  crooked American system that would attempt to strip them of their freedoms.

there's a right way and a wrong way, you're correct.

Kaepernick is fomenting these feelings of anti-Americanism among certain Americans who don't realize how good they have it relative to people in other parts of the world. that's dangerous stuff. when he sits on the bench during the anthem he's sending up a clear bat signal to other people like him that it's time to organize and revolt. this is America and i won't stand for that sort of open rebellion against the country that i love.

my local militia is protecting my right to freedom. when they get together tomorrow and fire the .50 cal at some watermelons, drink 14 cases of beer, fly confederate flags over their tents and fry some meat i know that they have my best interests in mind. they definitely are not there discussing anything like how crooked American government is and how the country is turning against them. they're just there making sure they have the proper training in place to defend REAL AMERICANS from scum like Kaepernick.

we're saluting a symbol. a symbol is art. it means different things to different people. i can no more force you to look at a painting and see what i see in it than i can force my kids to listen to me in the morning when they're getting ready for school.

suggesting that EVERYONE has the same feelings and should express them in this totally jingoistic and nationalistic way is as un-American a thing as you can possibly do.

i think what everyone is missing here is that white people in this country are fine. there's nothing bad about America that anyone should be protesting   as soon as people like Kaepernick realize that everything is fine and stop trying to change the status quo, we'll all be better off.

all these stories about privilege and inequality and racial disparity.. it's just sour grapes from lazy people.

maybe if they tried harder to achieve they'd actually have some success.

we're all playing on a level field. we all have the same opportunity. if people really wanted to "overcome" their perceived disadvantages then they would.

i'm tired of hearing people complain about how hard they had it growing up... as though that's some kind of excuse.... they don't know my story. I had it hard. we struggled. we had to make our own lunches starting in 6th grade. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW TAXING THAT IS????????????????????

Dr Detroit and who else?
20 percent of African American disapprove of his actions.   But the number for finding it disrespectful specifically would be much higher.  Whether you disapprove or approve depends on whether you weigh his right to be disrespectful more than the message he is trying to convey.  I am not even sure why this is a debate.   Of course it is disrespectful.  That is the ####### point.  It is the value you place on his message whether you approve or not.

It's no more unpatriotic than say flying the confederate battle flag.  Which is hilarious since a lot of the same people outraged by Ck are the same racists that fly the battle flag.

Over generalizations never seem to help.  I have done it before and I have made an effort to stop and debate specific points.   The over generalizations usually come across as the biggest d-baggish posts.

OK.  Do you care to address why specifically you don't place any value on his message?

hey, it's right there in the Trump campaign slogan

"we will make America great again!"

1) again? which implies it was once great before and has since fallen off.. when was it great before? when people knew their place and did things the right way? #dogwhistle

2) isn't suggesting that America isn't great disrespectful? what makes it not great? isn't this suggestion that America needs to change, by a Presidential candidate, a little more persuasive and potentially dangerous than a guy sitting on the bench during a sporting event?

seriously. people just don't understand that a little hard work and initiative would make America great again.

it's just these lazy people who think everything should be given to them like a participation medal that think they have a right to whine when things don't go their way. suck it up, buttercup.  my ancestors, not me, fought & died for the right for America to be free and that means there will be winners and losers. the losers don't have a right to complain.. they lost.

now hand me my Confederate flag and my .45 so i can properly salute

Shouldn't he just shut up and be happy with the country that he became rich in? Multibillionaire, doesn't sound like things are too bad for him. If that's "not great," then sign me up!!

OK.  Do you care to address why specifically you don't place any value on his message?
Values are weighted.   They are not an all or nothing thing.  I put weight into his arguement that there are racially issues that are deciding the country.  We see it on the news every night.  It is a difficult issue that nobody seems to have answers for.  But I put more value into the people who fought and died for this country and the ideals on which the country is made up on and choose to honor them during the national anthem.   There is a time and place for both.

Checking out. I was interested in a serious conversation. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice...

That's awful.  I read this as,  "There's a problem and we've determined no one has the answer.  Now stand up for American ideals and shut up."  Can we add, "Instead of offending my patriotic sensibilities, go ##### about it on twitter where nobody has to hear you?"

Thank you for responding, sorry if you think I called you a racist (I called no one in particular that).  Sometimes a shocking action can be used to move the conversation.

Then do it and let everyone else do what they want to do.  Why do you need everyone else to do it?
They should appreciate the fact that they're an American. We have it sooooooo much better than anywhere else on this globe. I feel strongly we should all, everyone, stand together as Americans and be grateful about it.

It's no more unpatriotic than say flying the confederate battle flag.  Which is hilarious since a lot of the same people outraged by Ck are the same racists that fly the battle flag.
More generalizations, you guys are great.

I hate that flag, FTR.

But I'm just a stupid plantation owning / slave riding racist :kicksrock:

I accused you guys of something, and I'm sorry I know it makes you mad but from all I've seen here and in other topics I don't think it's baseless
Maybe you haven't read the whole thread and just feel like making baseless accusations. You should read the thread, or other quotes from some before calling them racist. By your logic, over half of this board is racist based on the poll.

Perhaps you missed comments of mine where I said I actually agree with the premise of the message (especially inequalities amongst minorities, not just blacks either, hispanics too) - I work in a field where communicating and figuring out the best method of making that communication is extremely important. If someone agrees with your message, but disagrees with how you deliver it, strong chance you won't gain their support. Also, I don't think this board is over 50% racist, FTR.

I think your loaded and outdated poll and how much you cling to it is about the most racist thing you've got going

Interesting how you can possibly read what I said as stand up and shut up.

What about the CBS poll? Those numbers lean even heavier against him than this poll and are much more recent.

We can just ignore those as well, I guess. Anyone on the opposite side of JZilla is just an ignorant racist.

Racists hiding behind flag ceremonies, now more American than peaceful dissent

Sure I called you racists last week too

Or maybe mine was based on multiple comments in the last hour? Reading down bud?

The same 10-15 people in this thread running circles around each other, patting themselves on the back, thinking if they just dominate this thread, their point is correct.

Recent CBS poll shows you're still the overwhelming minority.

You've always got polls, I know.  My accusation was a reaction to an overarching attitude in here, and the idea that because a guy's action is officially non-patriotic his message should be rendered unimportant or invalid.  To me that concept is un-American.  I feel like to jon_mx for example, his message is not important enough .. or maybe there is no message important enough.. there's some inconsistency there.  Maybe it's me.

It's a very important thing!  And it's a situation that would really not be too hard to at least improve significantly through existing channels.  But let's not talk about it because he kneeled? Or at first sat? Or pig socks? Or somebody's doing a fist now?  I don't love any of that stuff but it's not easy to move a conversation, that's why people do it.

I got work to do all week, I know you're the OP and you post a lot and I've kept up as much as I could but I can't really reread the whole thing.  I'm sure you are a good dude in life as are pretty much all of us.

So without reading comments, you make accusations of racism on what? Seems to be an overarching theme to your posts, maybe you should step back on that and realize everyone has different reasons. Sure, there are absolutely racists out there that don't support Kaep, does that make them the majority, or even a big percentage? Who knows, but to lump everyone in there without any facts is wildly incorrect.

Polls = data BTW... Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but data is factual.

"Yeah, well my generalizations are true."
Perhaps you didn't read the posts I quoted, perhaps you're just not bright, IDK

My comments were based on the quotes I read earlier (which I posted), yours was based on an opinion, an opinion that didn't read or struggled to understand some basic stuff above.

The irony of the sarcasm in your statement probably escapes you, so I'll point that out too.

I reworded that a little because I didn't mean for it to read like I haven't been in here, I just can't remember who said what. Because I'd inferred from other posts that you didn't respect the message but you straightened me out.

This thread went from zero to insane so quickly.
It was guaranteed to go that way pretty much from the get-go if you saw the original OP (which was edited but still exists in quoted form on the first page) and this poorly constructed poll from the OP who shows his bias against CK not only with his beginning comments, but also with the specific poll choices (which several here thought did not provide them a choice as to how they really felt).

I have never said it is not worthy enough or does not merit discussion.  When the national anthem is being played to respect our Country and those that served and died for it, I am going to respect more than any other issue at that moment short of some emergency.

Do you not consider police officers murdering black people to be an emergency?

It's hard to understand why you are more outraged over the protest than the cause.

you're right black Americans have it better than, say, the Roma or maybe the untouchables in India. even better than Syrians right now.

great argument

if someone kicks you in the face with boots that have the American flag on them you absolutely should stand up and ask for another kick in the face. AND be grateful for it. better than getting kicked in the face by some guy wearing Canadian flag boots.

it was insane from the start. that's the kicker.

finally people who actually understand what's happening started posting and calling out the loons.
