QB Anthony Richardson, IND (6 Viewers)

It wasn't his blind side. AR was looking to his right and that is exactly where the defender came from. He has ZERO field awareness! Kurt Warner was even saying, a good QB, would have rolled protection, scrambled left, or gotten rid of the ball. But AR did NONE of that. AR even admitted that he needs to do a better job of recognizing that stuff. Did the OT whiff? Sure, but it happens all the time in the NFL and QBs have to make snap decisions. This is year 3 and his accuracy MAY have improved some, but his ability to read a defense and make checks at the line is still that of a novice. Yeah, yeah..."but he's still young"...then let him be a backup until he figures it out...if ever. I'm assuming Danny Dimes can do a better job at reading a defense. If not, Colts will be picking top 4 again.

Actually he was looking left and never saw the rush.

I stand corrected. I actually watched the video and he was looking left. I saw a still photo originally and it looked like ARs helmet was turned to the right just as the hit landed. Also, I saw the RB was going out on a pattern...in that case, aren't they taught that if a defender is coming unblocked, you abort your route and at least try to chip the defender? That split second could have allowed AR to escape. Meh, it's preseason. Probably some young RB and OT making mistakes.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports Anthony Richardson (finger) “had all his X-rays come. back clean and will be back on the practice field in the coming days.”
This report comes just hours after head coach Shane Steichen said Richardson would be “day-to-day” with the finger injury he suffered in Thursday night’s preseason game. Richardson himself said he doesn’t expect to miss much time with the injury, so we should expect to see him back in short order.
X-rays clean. He’s fine.

We may now resume watching the saddest QB competition ever.

Let’s go AR - time to step it up.
I hate to disagree, but 2nd saddest QB competition.
Did you forget Cleveland ?

Ouch.

What’s more bothersome to me than yet another injury was his lack of awareness of the defender left unblocked on his frontside. I know he was looking left immediately, but you’d hope he’d have either recognized the blocking issue pre snap/at the snap, or caught the defender steaming down on him through his peripheral vision. The intangibles are just as important as the health concerns IMO.
I’ve watched that play 5x now. Feels like a real stretch to put that one on ARich.

Someone blew their assignment. Bad. ARich did his job. He started on his checkdowns, and the defender came through unabated, and was in his lap in .3 seconds.

All due respect, but there is no possible “AR should have…” statement that is fair or correct to assign to ARich on this one. This absolutely was not his fault. And further, if they don’t get their OL cleaned up, no QB will be successful in Indy. That was a horrific display.
I feel the exact opposite. This play was 100% on Richardson. He called the play and seemed to have no idea what it was.

To me, it looked like the defender was designed to be unblocked (that's why the RT blocked down) and both pass catchers on the right are running 3 step drop routes. Meanwhile the left side is running slower developing routes. In essence, Richardson read the play backwards and was starting down the wrong side of the field, where based on what the other 10 guys were doing, it was designed for a free rusher on the right if the LB came, and then you throw to the space the LB vacated.

This was disturbing to me. You'd be frustrated with a college freshman for reads like this. Probably 90% of the time, if there is a free rusher from the outside, its on the QB to know it, as he's choosing before the play where the hot routes and the protections are. I don't know if Daniel Jones is the answer, but I doubt he gets blown up like this.

Man. I need to get better at watching football I guess, because that play looked like it had zero chance. You’re telling me that screen door was by design? Yikes.

It's by Richardson's design. He's calling the protection to slide left. Why? I can't answer that. But he does, so that should be a quick throw right if both the LB and DE come, they both do, but he's looking in the wrong direction. Based on the protection he called, he should have been staring right at the blitzer.

So, one of two things happened, he either called the wrong protection (possibly) or in the process of calling the protection, he forgot the routes being run (also possibly) either is a problem.

I will add, ideally, the RB will have noticed what is happening and chipped the DE, but he also might be assuming the ball is gonna be out quick, and he's probably high read order. That's asking a lot of a young RB though. Somewhat related, I recall an interview with Joe Burrow a few years back (the Super Bowl year I think) where he was talking about Joe Mixon making those decisions to block a rusher instead of running his route, and Burrow saying, it was great to know that if he were to mess up a read, Mixon would often give him another second to make something happen.

Anthony Richardson thoroughly outplayed Daniel Jones in the Colts joint practice with the Packers yesterday… reports are AR is very CLEARLY looking like Indy’s QB1
Do you find Frascella to be credible? I can't say I'm able to say that.

In this case his reporting of the Colts QB batttle does not align with multiple Colts beat writers who I do find to be very credible. And fwiw I wish everything he was saying in that tweet was true.

The Colts desperately want Richardson to be the starter, so that gives him a leg up. I'm sure they would rather not admit failure on Richardson yet. One thing I noticed in the preseason game AR got hurt was that he looked pretty good on those throws to Warren. It was short lived, but good nevertheless.

I agree with the bolded but not sure he'll be the week one starter, feel like that is very much in doubt.

If it's close based on practice play, and I think it is, they might opt to start with Jones on a short leash.

We've seen QB's, like Bryce Young, get benched and come back strong but we already had that with AR last year. It's something else to bench a highly drafted QB like that in b2b years, when you get to that phase it's usually the end of the relationship.

So I can't say with any degree of certaintity what the Colts are thinking, but again would say if it's close they might prefer to start with Jones to begin the season on the notion they can turn to AR later as oppossed to starting with AR to begin the season and if they have to bench him for Jones it's probably over.

That's where we disagree. If it's close I think the Colts prefer to start Richardson, for the reasons I posted in post #3,072.

It's not really a disagreement on preferring Richardson to start. I don't think you are getting the gist of what I'm saying about the timeline of when that occurs. In other words I don't think they are care or are desperate if he starts week one, the bigger picture is that he starts at sometime this next season so that's he's not a lost cause.

I'm not saying the disagreement is who we prefer, but who the Colts prefer. I really believe Steichen prefers Richardson to start. Especially if he is showing improvement, which I think he is. Could he regress, sure, but I believe they want him as their starting QB now. They sure as hell aren't winning many games with Daniel Jones and sure as hell aren't going to improve as a team with Daniel Jones. With Steichen and Ballard probably in their last year with the Colts, they know that Daniel Jones won't save their jobs.

Thanks to Jones' own struggles, AR seems like a cheap reclamation project you can store at the back of your bench. Could be particularly valuable in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

For ff purposes, AR starting boosts Mitchell with slight downgrading of Pittman and Downs. In redraft I don't really want to touch this offense. Drafted AR the past two years and I'm starting to feel like he's the Pitts of QBs right now.

And to be clear, Frascella is not a guy I put a lot of faith in. There are certainly more reputable writers. At this stage with drafts dropping everywhere, I try to share what I'm seeing.

Another and better source with Holder saying he doesn't see an obvious separation.

As always, there will be different opinions.

Stephen Holder, ESPN
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45968016/nfl-indianapolis-colts-anthony-richardson-daniel-jones

But after more than three weeks of training camp -- the Colts wrapped up following Thursday's joint practice with the Green Bay Packers -- there does not appear to be obvious separation between the two players heading into Saturday's preseason matchup with Green Bay...

The starter remains undecided, but here's what was established during training camp: The Colts have two very different quarterbacks whose strengths and weaknesses were further solidified during the weeks of work they put in...

Training camp still showed Richardson to be somewhat boom-or-bust. He routinely showed the big arm that allowed him to lead the NFL in air yards per attempt in 2024 (11.4). However, Richardson also had the occasional inexplicable miss on easy throws, leading to a handful of days in camp when he completed fewer than 50% of his attempts in 11-on-11 action...

Jones was more consistently accurate through camp, as one would expect seeing how his career completion rate of 64.1% is more than 13 points higher than Richardson's. Jones has still not mastered the Colts' offense, given his recent arrival in free agency in March. But his veteran status showed, as he seemed to have good command of the scheme despite being in his first season in the system. But when Jones pushed the ball downfield, results were usually sporadic. To put Jones' passing into perspective, consider the following: Jones completed 90 more passes than Richardson last season. Still, he totaled just 256 more passing yards.

In this case his reporting of the Colts QB batttle does not align with multiple Colts beat writers who I do find to be very credible.

Thanks. Can you share some of the links for what they are saying that doesn't align?
I could post a ton covering duration of camp but I'll try and keep this from last day or two and give on link to 4 different beat writers, all very credible.

Before I do the two comments that was made in that tweet you posted that seems off is the phrasing of AR thoroughly out playing Jones and clearly AR is the starter. The camp reports I read are more mixed with Jones better some days and AR others, and that the competition is very much on.

1. Stephen Holder of ESPN and this is the link with the headline literally reading it's still very much a competition: Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones still vie for Colts' QB1 role

Here is one key reference from the article but he makes multiple references to it being a battle. It's a good in-depth read IMO on how they have played I'd recommend those who care read but the reference below is a direct contradiction to "clearly" AR is the starter.

But after more than three weeks of training camp -- the Colts wrapped up following Thursday's joint practice with the Green Bay Packers -- there does not appear to be obvious separation between the two players heading into Saturday's preseason matchup with Green Bay.
2. Mike Chappel: https://fox59.com/sports/anthony-richardson-sr-daniel-jones-stay-tuned/

Key article reference:
Anthony Richardson Sr.? Or, Daniel Jones? It seems as if the Colts are no closer on Thursday than when training camp opened July 23.

These next two beat writers say a lot of the same stuff as the two above about the state of the QB battle but I'll use them to refute the notion that AR thoroughly outplayed Jones yesterday. More like both were kind of stinky until the last drive of practice.

3. Kevin Bowen: https://1075thefan.com/601153/colts-camp-notebook-day-13-rough-offense-day/

Key article reference: nothing to really link without making this post to long but he gives a breakdown of both QB's play yesterday and says at one point AR had the worst periods he's seen in 3 years but ended on a high note.

4. James Boyd, paywall article: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/65...thony-richardson-daniel-jones-shane-steichen/

Key article reference: again similar to Bowen's report above in how they did at practice yesterday and since this is behind a paywall I'll post some of the comments. Essentially same thing as Bowen was saying, both QB's struggled behind a leaky OL until Richardsons last drive.

The few times when the protection did hold up, both QBs still had their struggles. Jones was efficient on paper, but the offense was rarely able to pick up a first down when he was at the helm. He ended his day by being picked off by Green Bay linebacker Isaiah Simmons in a two-minute drill between both teams’ second units.

Richardson, meanwhile, missed on a handful of the short and intermediate throws that have held him back from being a surefire starter. He was intercepted by cornerback Johnathan Baldwin after making a late and errant throw across the middle.

Richardson, however, pulled himself together to end practice on a high note during the two-minute drill.

Thanks. Those are all helpful to get a full picture. The key one for me was the Holder article I quoted earlier. Should be interesting to see how it goes tomorrow.

From a friend who I think hits it about right:

If we're assuming rational coaching, Richardson wins or loses the Week 1 job this weekend. If he plays most of the game, as Steichen said he will, it'll be pretty hard to go with him (or against him) if he looks great (or awful) in that light, with the last preseason game almost certainly being a non-factor as both Jones and Richardson will sit.

Same I went all in on him last year, took him in the 5th of a new startup 1 QB league last year
Took him over Stroud in others...
:bag::bag::bag:
The good news is, Danny 10-Pennies will almost certainly come out and fall on his face. So we may yet see a redemption arc.

I’m skeptical it will matter beyond this year.

That's just it

They have singaled they are moving on. Without the reps AR is really done

This is what I've been expecting for the past few weeks. Don't think it was ever a legit competition either. Every time Stiechen opens up his mouth about what he wants he keeps hammering away at consistency. Richardson was going to have to run away with the job to get the nod.

It's a terrible short sighted decision but might work out better for AR. Had he been the opening day starter every mistake he made would be amplified. Easier to take over after if/when Jones faceplants, not that the Indy fans don't already prefer AR by a whopping margin. I've said this before but had they started with AR and had to bench him later for performance it would be over in Indy.

To be fair the first part of that is him reporting what Ballard has said publicly in the last few weeks . The second part about needing to make a decision now does not make sense.

So glad I was able to dump AR for a 2nd round pick in dynasty Saturday.

The Colts should have let hime sit and develop and learn longer or at least designed a more "running QB" offense the was the Ravens did for L Jaz at the start of his NFL career.

Riley Leonard starts the most games there this year
Riley Leonard was my pick for the most underrated QB in this draft class. Liked him a ton at Notre Dame.

I think the Colts are making the right call going with Jones. There is certainly a chance that Jones is this year's Darnold (not a prediction, but similar situations) and Richardson just hasn't looked like a guy where the light is gonna come on. I think that play where he hurt his finger was enough of an awful job by him, that I couldn't imagine feeling good starting him, that was a play you'd be disappointed in a college freshman for.

As a heavily invested Jonathan Taylor owner I approve of Jones starting. Ha ha
Jones starting is good news for all the Colts in fantasy, except maybe Pierce.

Yeah, that occurred to me. AR taking over at some point if DJ looks well, like DJ, would be a lot easier PR-wise.

Starting ARich might create a lot of noise from folks who think DJ should start.
