If Goff wasn’t good enough to be the QB of the future for him then I doubt Danny Dimes will be.

I still don't really understand the comparison...Rams were starting Goff and knew what they had...Jones would be a backup to Stafford that they could try to rebuild while not having to commit big $ to (or commit to being their QB of the future)...two totally different scenarios.
 
Some of these posts are hard to understand to be honest, he's not good, he's been in the league for SIX years and been given multiple chances, he's not anybody's future. He'll make a decent backup/spot starter. That is it, the end.

What's the source? Is Jones saying this himself or is this some espn writer? They are quoting Barkley so maybe it's hinting at him joining the Eagles? Maybe I just have no clue what nfl players want, I would THINK that if his goal was playing time he'd have a better chance of that elsewhere but if his goal was to try to get a ring then that makes sense.
 
At 27 in the hardest position to play in sports he is gonna get another shot somewhere. Not this year. Maybe not next year, but he will get another shot. See Bryce Young people that already said he is done. NFL landsape changes so quickly and it just takes one team. All my opinion.
 
So is he getting to pick a short term home for rest of this season, then getting released to pick a long term home in the off season?

I’m not sure I see it.

I guess he gives them a solid backup in a season that is headed in a good direction, and if it keeps going that way allows them to make a better decision to let Darnold walk if he pushes far into the playoffs?

Someone tell me how to react to this signing.

Very QB-friendly environment.

Good for Daniel. He can relax, regroup, and most importantly... he's far away from the toxicity of NYG.

I like this move for MIN and DJ.

For MIN .... they get a QB with a lot of starts that can backup Darnold for a playoff run. They also get a little bit of a negotiating toy in Darnold contract negotiations this off season by the threat that DJ could take over.

For DJ ... I'm no fan as my posts will indicate. But I do believe QBs often need a second chance elsewhere under a different OC. It gets him into a team that has a starting QB on a 1 year deal. It keeps him employed. It puts him with a classy organization. Something the NYGs are the opposite of. He can then shop his services this offseason if he needs to.

Good choice by him. It seems a good setup to get yourself together.

IIRC they have Mullens and Mark Rypien's kid too so I doubt he's even doing anything this week on a holiday week. They probably just have him get settled.
 
The back up is Nick Mullens. I thing the Vikings practice is squad is his safe harbour for the season. He can sign with any team from the practice squad with no repercussions. Barring injury I don't think the Vikings put him on the 53.

I think Jones would prefer to work on his game without the stress of starting. I think he wants to continue his career as a backup and doesn't want to end up totally out of football like Ryan Tannehill.

Practice squad basics


  • Practice squad players practice with the team. They do not play in games, unless they are elevated (see above)
  • Practice squad players are paid per week and can be released at any point during the season.
  • Practice squad players are free to sign with other NFL teams, but they have to be signed to the 53-man active roster of the acquiring team. A practice squad player cannot be signed to another practice squad unless he is first released or waived.
  • A practice squad player can not sign with his team’s upcoming opponent, unless he does so six days before the upcoming game or 10 days if his team is currently on a bye week.
  • If a practice squad player is signed to the active roster, he will receive a minimum of three weekly paychecks, even if he is released before spending three weeks with the new team.
  • In order to be signed to a practice squad after being released, a player who is not a vested veteran must first clear waivers, and is subject to waiver claims by other teams.

Maybe we’ll see something like a Geno Smith career arc. Two players not NFL ready - drafted by two NY/NJ teams that aren’t NFL ready -eventually join teams that know what they’re doing. I’m not sure Jones is any good, but it’s hard to evaluate someone in the middle of a dumpster fire. Clean slate is warranted.
 
He's friends with the Mannings, I'm sure they reached out to say that he should find the right fit since he has lots of options (10 teams?).

Raiders were an easy no. He just left an organization that had turnstile OCs, didn't believe in building the OL or provide receiving weapons. Raiders are the same - no reason to leave 1 dysfunction for another. Career killer even if its a starter spot.

Minny is interesting for the coaching history with QBs, dome, and actually has higher end WRs/TE. Good for him to experience the atmosphere and a play-off run.

Don't see a Geno 2.0 with Jones
Been watching him for 6 years
On the tube and live
He still doesn't throw an accurate deep pass
He still forces the ball at the worst time
He still doesn't make the right read on a consistent basis
6 years no improvement
I still say he has a place in the league as an H-back
