QB Davis Mills, HOU (1 Viewer)

Davis Mills completed 19-of-28 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in the Texans' 24-9, Week 3 loss to the Panthers.

Making his first career start, the No. 67 overall pick absorbed one bone-crushing hit after another, taking four sacks and nine hits by FOX's count. It was frankly unclear how Mills got up from several of his knocks, especially in the second half as the Panthers pinned their ears back. The box score says Mills committed zero turnovers, but he plainly fumbled in the fourth quarter. Somehow, some way, it was ruled an incomplete pass. He tried to put the ball on the ground several other times. Predictably, the Texans weren't letting Mills so much as look down the field before falling behind by two scores after the break. Mills wasn't awful with the restrictor plate off, finding Brandin Cooks for a few nice gains. The problem is, Cooks remains the Texans' only weapon. Mills has another brutal Week 4 matchup in the Bills, where he will offer zero DFS or streaming appeal.

Davis Mills completed 11-of-21 passes for 87 yards and four interceptions in Houston's 40-0 Week 4 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Texans did not help Mills by putting him in ridiculous down-and-distance situations, and Mills did not help the Texans by constantly turning the ball over. The youngster leads a deeply unserious offense and Houston has now scored 16 points in 10 quarters of Mills starting. You know what you're getting into with Brandin Cooks. The rest of this offense may be a full fantasy fade until a healthy Tyrod Taylor -- or really, anybody else -- is inserted at quarterback. Don't play Mills against the Patriots next week.
Davis Mills is not good football QB person.

Davis Mills completed 21-of-29 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns in Houston's 25-22 Week 5 loss to New England.

This was a beautiful smoke-and-mirrors game from Texans OC Tim Kelly, who doctored up a flea flicker touchdown and an opening drive that lasted 18 plays before Mills spotted Antony Auclair running free in the end zone. Mills' longest pass play was a 67-yard touchdown pass to Chris Moore, who simply out-leaped J.C. Jackson for the ball despite being well-covered. Well, you probably shouldn't expect this kind of outburst often, but it was fun and Mills did (mostly) stop himself from throwing the risky balls that defined his first two starts. Mills will be a bye-week QB2 fill-in at best for Week 6's game against the Colts.

Davis Mills completed 29-of-43 passes for 243 yards and two interceptions in Houston's 31-3 Week 6 loss to Indianapolis.

Mills' first pick was a backbreaker for the Texans, handing the ball to the Colts in Houston territory already down by seven. Indianapolis quickly capitalized and put the Texans in the crockpot on low for the rest of the second half. The stats don't look half-bad, but Mills shriveled up in Indianapolis territory and was quickly pressured on a key fourth-and-short late in the third quarter. He'll be for the QB-desperate at best against the Cardinals in Week 7.

Davis Mills will start against the Cardinals in Week 7.

Texans' HC David Culley stated that Mills will start against the Cardinals, due to Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) not being ready to return. Culley reiterated that Taylor will be the team's starting quarterback when healthy. Mills faces a difficult test in Week 7. Outside of a frisky Week 5 performance against the Patriots, Mills has not looked like the answer in Houston.

The Athletic's Aaron Reiss reports Davis Mills will start for the Texans in Week 8 against the Rams.

Mills will make his fifth straight start for Houston even after Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) appeared ready to return to the lineup. "We just don't feel Tyrod is ready right now," Houston head coach David Culley said Friday. Taylor was shockingly efficient during this one and a half games as starter before injuring his hamstring. Mills, on the other hand, has been atrocious outside of his Week 5 performance against the Patriots. Mills is a downgrade for everyone in Houston's offense, including Brandin Cooks.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Davis Mills is expected to start in Week 14 against Seattle.

Tyrod Taylor is considered week to week with a wrist injury on his non-throwing arm. Mills will reclaim the starting job after throwing six touchdowns and seven interceptions in six starts this season. The rookie was ineffective outside of his three-touchdown Week 5 performance against New England. The run-heavy Texans will play out the regular season because they're contractually obligated to do so.

Texans head coach David Culley said Davis Mills will start for the rest of the 2021 season because he gives the team "the best chance to win."

Culley on Friday was finally honest about his QB decision after pretending Tyrod Taylor's wrist injury forced the team to start Mills. "You've seen the last three games we've played, it hasn't been good enough," Culley said when asked about his rest-of-season commitment to Mills, a third-round rookie. Taylor was mostly miserable in his return from an early-season hamstring injury. The team turns back to Mills, who has seven touchdown passes to eight interceptions this season. Mills is nothing more than a last-ditch option in two-QB formats this week against Seattle.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Texans could forgo a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft if Davis Mills plays well in the season's final weeks.

"If the Texans end up with a top-three pick in next year's NFL draft, they could lock into selecting a defensive end such as Michigan's Aidan Hutchinson or Oregon's Kayvon Thibodeaux," Schefter reported. Named the starter last week, Mills got off to a good start in Week 14, throwing for 331 yards and a score against the Seahawks. A few more solid outings could position Mills as the Texans' 2022 starter, with the team moving on from journeyman Tyrod Taylor. For now, Mills is only playable in superflex formats.

If the Texans stay at 1.03, taking a T like Neal or cross, or addressing defense makes a lot of  sense right now. Mills may or may not have a bright future but there’s no QB in this draft worth giving up on that chance this year.

No way the Texans take a QB that high especially in this draft class. Mills looks like the second best rookie QB of the class. What a find in the 3rd round

I agree other than one bit which is that LT is literally the only position the Texans don't have a need at. That's too high for a RT IMO (although they desperately need one), unless they plan on cutting ties either thru trade or letting Tunesil walk a year or two from now. Ideally they take one of the defensive end studs but Jax or Det could take both of them leaving them looking at Stingley at Corner or Hamilton at Safety. They could use ANYTHING on defense though, especially since they have nothing at Corner after trading Roby. S Justin Reid is a FA in 2022 and there is reportedly bad blood between him and the current waste of space coaching staff.

At this point, I'd trade Watson for as much as possible, take a defensive player at 1.03, draft o'line or WR with whatever 2022 1st rounder you get for Watson or trade down, and then see what Mills can do next year. This is a multi-year rebuild they've taken on, so no need to pigeon-hole high-pick at QB at the moment with nearly zero support around them.

I thought he looked pretty decent towards the end of the year. Doesn't look like they're getting anybody else there.
I like him a lot.  Generally hate the "passes the eyeball test" narrative, but he kind of does.  Looks like he can make all the throws, and more mobile than I thought.  I made it a point to pick him up in a couple dynasty leagues.  Very reasonablely priced right now, but I think he gets more expensive real soon.

Cooks is a very good receiver and I like Nico Collins a lot.  They drafted Menchie in the 2nd, so he has some nice targets.  Wouldn't be that surprised if he finished in the middle of the pack this year.

Davis Mills completed 6-of-10 passes for 58 yards, one touchdown and an interception in Thursday's preseason finale against the 49ers.

Mills played into the third quarter, where he notched his touchdown, a 16-yard strike to Chris Moore. His pick came on an end-zone target that turned into a tip drill. The second-year starter closes the book on the summer 19-of-30 (63.0 percent) for 168 yards (5.6 YPA), two scores and one pick. Not scintillating stuff, though Mills flashed enough during his surprising rookie campaign to earn some sophomore benefit of the doubt. That does not include in fantasy, where Mills will be a back-end QB2 with a skill corps led by Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins.

Most interesting quote from Pep Hamilton yesterday:

"I do think that we did somewhat have a governor on (Davis Mills) in the preseason. Now we feel like we’re going to have to do whatever to go out there and score at least one more point than the opponent"

This comment preceeded the "We're a score-first team" quote that definitely made the rounds yesterday. This may be more important...

I don't think anyone really knows what Houston's offense is going to look like and Pep is sounding off that we haven't seen nothing yet

Davis Mills completed 23-of-37 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns in Houston's 20-20 Week 1 tie over the Colts.

Mills gained 42 of those yards on a wide-open flea flicker that he threw well short of Brandin Cooks, costing the team six points. He also took three sacks -- one on a third-and-22 where only three Colts were within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage -- and lost a fumble deep in Texans territory that started the Indianapolis comeback. The Colts have a good defense even without Shaquille Leonard, but this was a rough watch and the direction of this offense feels not much different than it did last year. Mills will be hard to trust as a QB2 against Denver in Week 2 with no byes.

Sooooooooooooooooo, maybe they should be more aggressive throwing the ball on early downs? :shades:

Seem to playing not to lose instead of playing to win. Their running game isn't stong enough to carry them. Let Davis cook!

Davis Mills completed 20-of-32 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in Houston's 23-20, Week 3 loss to Chicago.

The one thing you could say for Mills' first two games was that he at least hadn't been turning it over. A red zone pick that was a late throw to Brandin Cooks was tipped and popped up. Then, in a tied fourth-quarter game deep in his own end, a checkdown target to Rex Burkhead on third-and-1 was tipped at the line and picked off by Roquan Smith, gifting the Bears free reign to run the clock out and kick a winning field goal. Mills managed some deeper throws in this game as the Bears seemed to focus most of their coverage on Cooks and lose other receivers at times. All-and-all, nothing he's done this year suggests he's an answer, but the Texans don't have a lot to lose by throwing him out there again in Week 4 against the Chargers.

Davis Mills completed 28-of-41 passes for 302 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the Texans' 38-20, Week 7 loss to the Raiders.

Mills' pick six late in the fourth quarter will be a hot topic, but the second-year quarterback turned in a solid performance overall on the day. Mills stood in the face of pressure all afternoon, and turned two pressured throws into scores, finding Chris Moore on a 13-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Phillip Dorsett on a 25-yard score late in the third. Mills surpassed 300 yards passing for the first time all season but needed a season-high 41 pass attempts to do so. He continues to be nothing more than a desperation play in 2QB/superflex leagues but could be in for a productive Week 8 against the Titans.

Davis Mills completed 13-of-22 passes for 154 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Texans' 29-17, Week 9 loss to the Eagles, adding three carries for 18 additional yards.

Although the two-score effort was Mills' second in three weeks as the Texans kept things surprisingly close in the first half, it was not a good performance from the second-year pro. Missing his Nos. 1 and 2 receivers in Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins, Mills kept failing to lead backups Chris Moore and Phillip Dorsett, who were actually freeing themselves into space. Case in point was a 34-yard Dorsett reception in the first quarter that should have been a 40-yard score. Mills' first interception was a blind heave over the middle under pressure, while the second was a miscommunication with Dorsett near the goal line. Mills isn't the worst quarterback we have ever seen, but his qualities are looking more and more like those of a solid No. 2 rather than multi-year starter. In addition to lacking arm drive, he is missing touch. A Giants road trip is on tap for Week 10.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson reports Davis Mills will start in Week 14 against the Cowboys.

The Kyle Allen Experiment went just about as poorly as anyone could have predicted, putting Mills back under center for the Texans' Week 14 slaughter at the hands of the Cowboys. Allen was as bad as he's ever been over his two starts for Houston, completing 59 percent of his passes for two scores and four picks. No quarterback had a lower completion rate over expected than Allen over the past two weeks. Mills is an upgrade for Nico Collins and Brandin Cooks if Cooks decides to play in Week 14.

Davis Mills isn't good but he's a capable QB. I think Houston covers the 17 pt spread with him in there over Allen.
