QB Drew Lock, NYG (1 Viewer)

Speaking Thursday, Broncos GM George Paton again emphasized the team wants to add competition for QB Drew Lock.

"We want to bring in competition at the quarterback position," was Paton's perfectly blunt response. "We're going to be patient, not force it, but we do realize we want competition and I've said that since I've gotten here and that hasn't changed." No parsing of Paton's language is necessary, though his options have basically boiled down to: 1. Take a quarterback at No. 9 overall. 2. Trade up between Nos. 4 and 8. 3. Acquire Teddy Bridgewater. That's not nothing, but the Broncos were outmaneuvered if they were ever in the hunt for the valuable No. 3 overall pick behind quarterback-locked-in teams Jacksonville and the Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the most sensible free agent option. Paton has realized what everyone has, and that is he cannot go into Week 1 with Lock unchallenged.

DREW LOCK QB, DENVER BRONCOS

Broncos coach Vic Fangio is planning on "50-50" reps for Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater across the offseason program and training camp.

"It will be something that at the end of the day, maybe not at the end of every day, but over the course of OTAs and training camp, it’ll be 50-50," was Fangio's exact quote. Rather than beginning the process of phasing Lock out, the Broncos seem to want to set up a competition he might actually win. If the Broncos needed to win a game tomorrow, there is zero question Bridgewater would be the better option, but the 28-year-old's ceiling has long since been established as hard capped. Lock, for his part, has not hinted at untapped potential through his first two years in the league, but if anyone has it in this quarterback room, we suppose it is the 2019 second-rounder. The Broncos had one of the league's worst quarterback situations before acquiring Bridgewater, and it remains that way now.

Lock has all the physical tools...he's also a gamer and has shown the ability to win games in the clutch. Combined with all those young skill position weapons and a solid OL there is still a very good chance he can make it in the NFL as a top 10-15 QB.

His issue is with processing info and decision-making. He still has not gone through a full training camp as a starter (injured rookie season and Covid last year) and this will be only his second season under Shurmur.

If Lock can't beat out Bridgewater then of course the die is cast...but Lock is no Paxton Lynch...and WAY, WAY premature to kick him to the curb.

Fangio: 'Too early to come to any conclusions' on QB battle between Bridgewater, Lock at Broncos OTAs

The Denver Broncos quarterback battle between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewaterkicked into gear as the signal-callers competed in 11-on-11 drills for the first time this offseason.

According to reporters at practice, the competition included Lock throwing two interceptions and nearly a third while focusing on getting through his progressions and taking more check-downs. Bridgewater, meanwhile, reportedly was accurate and appeared to already have a solid rapport with second-year wideout Jerry Jeudy.

Multiple reporters suggested Lock was the second-best QB at practice. Coach Vic Fangio said he wouldn't make any broad statements after one 11-on-11 drill when asked if Lock was second-guessing himself.

"I think it's too early to come to any conclusions one way or the other -- even a small conclusion," Fangio said, via the team’s official website. "[Quarterbacks coach] Mike [Shula] and [offensive coordinator] Pat [Shurmur] are working with him on that stuff. I'm not worried about it at this point."

Lock was dealing with what Fangio referred to as a "little blister on one of his fingers," which could have affected his accuracy.

The coach noted that part of the team's evaluation of the position is how each player handles the process.

"Absolutely," Fangio said. "That's all part of it. You don't want guys pressing. Two players you don't want as coaches - one that doesn't do anything the coaches tell him to do, and two, [someone who] only does what the coaches tell him to do. There's a fine line of moving on and seeing more than maybe you're schooled to see. You have to find that happy medium all the time."

It remains early in the process, but by most accounts, Lock trails Bridgewater in the battle for the starting gig. With three more days of OTAs this week, then Denver's three-day mandatory minicamp next week, there is still time for the third-year QB to make up ground before training camp opens in July.

Denver Broncos Depth Chart: Is Drew Lock still the answer at QB?

Excerpt:

Quarterbacks

The struggles of Drew Lock dominated parts of the offseason. Should Lock continue erratic quarterback play, we can assume the Broncos will look to shake up the depth chart. On April 22, Broncos general manager George Paton stated in a press conference he wants to add “competition” at quarterback for Lock, but he still believes in exercising patience.

Inconsistent play and turnovers have been the theme for Lock. While dealing with injuries, he tied for the most interceptions in the league (15) and was last in completion percentage (57.3%). Lock was bottom five in several other statistics. There have been enough bright spots for some to think he warrants another year to show his skills. Luckily for us, we will not have to wait long to get our answer.

The addition of Teddy Bridgewater will apply some pressure to Lock if he struggles in camp and to open the season. It does not seem as though Bridgewater will start to open the season. However, Bridgewater is coming off the best season of his career in terms of passing yards and touchdowns.

Broncos Briefs: Drew Lock’s “high” confidence on display with red-zone touchdown passes in first minicamp practice

Excerpt:

Three red-zone touchdown passes delivered with equal parts velocity and aggressiveness during the final period of the Broncos’ opening minicamp practice Tuesday confirmed quarterback Drew Lock’s mindset.

“My confidence is high right now,” he said. “I’m just excited with where this is going. I see a lot of things we’re building on and we get to focus on minor details now instead of bigger-picture things like last year. That will help us be 10 times better in the long run.”

The snaps were divided equally between Lock and Teddy Bridgewater — 14 apiece in 7-on-7 and 16 apiece in 11-on-11.

The minicamp is the last chance for Lock and Bridgewater to make an impression on the Broncos’ coaches before camp starts next month.

“I think they’ve both done well,” coach Vic Fangio said. “Obviously, they’re getting more comfortable with the offense. I see them operating a little more quickly and a little faster with their decisions compared with the first few days. I think both of them have benefited greatly from the work we’ve done.”

I happened to listen to a podcast with Greg Cosell, who I think is a very smart and thoughtful analyst, and he was very adamant that Lock is signficantly more talented than Bridgewater and that Bridgewater is not a starting caliber QB. He acknowledged that Lock has a lot of work to do but said that he's shown flashes and has the physical tools.  He thinks it's possible the Broncos can "fix him."  From the posts I'm reading in the Jeudy and Sutton threads, people seem to think it's a foregone conclusion that Bridgewater will win the job and be an upgrade from Lock. We'll see if that actually happens.

He is a Jay Cutler. He has arm strength and ability. Not so much a brain scan ability. I’m a hold. But he is my fourth option in a two QBs league. And I have two not prime time rooks to see what happens.

I think Teddy will be named the starter.  Broncos appear to be built for a caretaker QB - play good D, run the ball, quick passes to the outside.  I don't think they want or need a gunslinger like Lock.

That being said, I think Teddy shows his limitations and doesn't make it thru the season, either due to injury or performance.  Bronco QB comes with high expectations and fans will turn on him if the team struggles.  I think Lock takes over midway.  The time on the bench will have been great for him, give him a chance to really digest what's going on.  Lock steps back in and plays well.

It's gonna be a bumpy ride but at the end of the day, I think Lock comes out on top.

Not good for fantasy purposes.  I'm staying away.

Drew Lock will receive the first reps in the Broncos' quarterback competition.

Coach Vic Fangio made the announcement on Tuesday, citing Lock's incumbent status. Fangio has previously insisted Lock's showdown with Teddy Bridgewater will be a genuine 50-50 competition, and he reiterated that on Tuesday. That seems difficult to believe considering Lock's continued abysmal play in 2020, but the Broncos still seem slightly desperate to make Lock pan out. If — likely when — he doesn't this summer, the transition to Bridgewater will begin. We would consider Bridgewater the slight favorite to be out there Week 1.

DREW LOCK QB, DENVER BRONCOS

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said there has been "no separation" in the quarterback battle between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater so far.

Lock ended Friday's practice with a 45-yard touchdown to K.J. Hamler but Bridgewater has reportedly been the more accurate passer (especially in the red zone) through Denver's first few practices. It's an ongoing battle that will likely last until the end of the summer, eventually benefitting whomever earns the nod since the Broncos are quietly projected to face the league's softest schedule of opposing pass defenses this year. It remains an important battle to monitor for Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Noah Fant, etc.

DREW LOCK QB, DENVER BRONCOS

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said the team's quarterback competition between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater is "still even steven."

He also added that "there's been no separation" — the exact phrase he used when asked about the competition last week. The two are expected to continue splitting the first-team snaps 50-50 for the next three days ahead of Denver's off day on Thursday. Their performances during live preseason games will likely help Fangio declare a winner in August.

re: Lock vs Bridgewater: camp reports so far seem to be very much a rorschach test - everything confirms what the analyst already thought.    The only exception seemed to be Teddy throwing 3 picks on Saturday, but later it came out that two of those were batted at the LOS so who knows.

The most telling thing I have heard  - I think it came from Fangio: "how many wow plays make up for a #### play?  I don't know the answer to that."  In context, Lock has wow plays but also #### plays.  conversely, Teddy doesn't have the #### plays but is short on the wow.

I think it comes down to how good the team thinks they are.  If the team believes the defense can be dominant (I think it can be) and if the running game can control the game (depends on OL, IMO), you go with Steady Teddy.  If you expect to be behind a lot and need to play catch-up, Lock is the guy.

Based on the 5-11 record last year, I tend to think the later - I.E. Lock.

I have Lock on low buy in for lottery ticket. I’m not rostering Bridgewater. My thoughts are that for a 5th QB in super flex go for upside.

Speaking Tuesday, Broncos OC Pat Shurmur said he has seen the "best version" of Drew Lock in training camp.

The Broncos have one of the most intriguing QB competitions in the league with Lock dueling Teddy Bridgewater for the Week 1 nod. "I've seen both guys getting better," Shurmur said Tuesday. "This is the best version of Drew I've seen. He's done a really good job. ... Teddy's got experience, he's got experience in multiple offenses." With six weeks until the season, the two QBs appear neck and neck.

Thought Lock looked pretty good with the preseason start today. Got an 80 yard bomb TD to Hamler on bad coverage, but he placed the ball well and hit what he was supposed to hit. No throws that were really off target and showed decent pocket presence. Definitely a much stronger arm than Teddy.

Of course that was all against the Vikings 2nd stringers.

At this point him and Teddy are fighting for the #2 spot.  This is Brett's team now.

Jonathan Cooper, DeShawn Williams lead the way for Denver vs. Seattle, as Drew Lock disappoints

Stock Down

The Quarterback play

Last week Broncos Country was treated to some sublime quarterback play. Something they’ve been starved of for far too long.

This week, they once again found themselves famishing.

Teddy Bridgewater led the offense down the field for two fairly convincing touchdown drives, but he needed the help of three fourth-down conversions to have those drives end in points. To be fair, one of those fourth down situations never should have arose — as it was the result of an awful Javonte Williams drop — but still Bridgewater’s drives required a lot of luck.

Despite that, Bridgewater was quite a bit more impressive than Drew Lock, who didn’t appear to carry over any momentum from last week.

On his first two dropbacks, Lock was quickly sacked, leading to a punt on fourth down. It’s very difficult to assign blame to sacks, but it was undeniably a bad look after Bridgewater led two scoring drives.

The two highlights of the night for Lock were an inspiring drive inside the two-minute warning that resulted in a field goal, which could’ve resulted in more, and a nice flip-and-catch on the run to Seth Williams, who ran for a big gain.

However, the night on the whole was still a dissatisfactory performance. Bridgewater had two possessions to work with against a handful of Seattle’s starters and led two touchdown drives, resulting in a 14-0 lead. Lock had five drives to work with, and helped the offense generate nine points.

Can't-Miss Play: Lock's shovel pass ends with Williams' hurdling 33-yard gain

Drew Lock completed 12 of 21 passes for 113 yards and an interception in the Broncos' Week 4 loss to Baltimore.

Lock was his usual erratic self in one half of play against the Ravens. Forced into a pass-heavy game script, Lock had no chance against Baltimore's defense. He ended the game with a bad pick in the end zone on a ball intended for Courtland Sutton, and seemed generally out of sync with Sutton in their two quarters on the field together. Denver's offense is a fragile one that depends on a game manager like Bridgewater avoiding big mistakes and taking timely downfield shots to Sutton and Tim Patrick. With Lock under center, the Broncos would go from a playoff contender to a bottom dweller. Lock should only be considered in superflex formats next week against the Steelers.

There is zero reason Fangio should be starting Lock next week.  WHen are they ever gonna give up on this scrub?!

Denver coach said Drew Lock is expected to start in Week 18 against the Chiefs.

He added that Lock would have missed practice because of a shoulder issue if the team had held a practice on Monday. Lock left Week 17 after taking a hard hit to his throwing shoulder but returned after missing a few drives. All signs point to him being ready to face Kansas City. Teddy Bridgewater remains in concussion protocols and will not play in Week 18. Fangio also expressed optimism for Lock's future, saying, "I still think he can be an NFL quarterback." Lock is likely playing for a shot at the backup gig in 2022.

Seahawks acquired QB Drew Lock from the Broncos as part of the Russell Wilson trade.

Lock only has one year left on his contract. He is unlikely to be much more than a placeholder for the Seahawks' next quarterback. Expect them to look for a quarterback with the first-round selection they acquired from the Broncos, the No. 9 overall pick. Lock threw 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions across three seasons with the Broncos. He came out of Missouri with a strong arm but accuracy issues and never managed to dial in his throws. Lock will be the favorite to start for Seattle in Week 1 but his stint under center will come with a short leash.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that the Seahawks did not consider Drew Lock a "throw-in" in the Russell Wilson trade.

"There's a belief among some with Seattle that Lock's issues in Denver were a byproduct of a revolving door of offensive coordinators and a defensive-minded head coach," notes Fowler. Lock is a "viable fallback option," in Seattle's eyes. His three years in Denver strongly suggest the opposite, but with only Jacob Eason on the roster behind him and a fairly weak quarterback draft class, Lock very well could get another trial with the Seahawks.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the team "loved" Drew Lock when he was coming out of Missouri.

GM John Schneider added the team has a "ton of faith" in Lock and are "excited about a change of scenery for him." Earlier this week, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the Seahawks did not consider Lock a "throw-in" piece of the Russell Wilson trade. These quotes are yet another sign Seattle is serious about starting him. Lock was, without hyperbole, one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league in 2020, and he was not a lot better in three late starts last year. Perhaps a new team will help Lock take a step forward, but his first three years in the league do not inspire much confidence.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Drew Lock's propensity for turnovers "doesn't fit with us."

"Unfortunately for him, his play has come about where there are a lot of turnovers in his game and that just doesn’t fit with us," Carroll told reporters Tuesday. "We have to fix that and change his mentality and do the things to help him be his best." Lock was miserable in 21 starts over three years with the Broncos, competing 59.3 percent of his attempts for 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Pro Football Focus graded Lock as the league's 43rd best passer in 2021, and only nine QBs had a lower adjusted expected points per drop back than Lock. There's almost no scenario in which Lock starts 17 games for the Seahawks in 2022. Carroll on Tuesday implied the team is interested in re-signing Geno Smith.

Pete  Carol on Drew Lock:

“The first look at Drew, he’s really athletic, he’s really a confident athlete, you can see he’s got a lot of body control, he’s got quick feet, he’s got a quick arm, he’s got various ways he can release the football as his body’s in different positions,” Carroll said. “He’s got a real knack there. He’s got a strong arm, he can throw the ball a mile down the field. He compares to Geno, and Geno Smith has a great arm. He has a world-class arm, and all that. To match up with that, that’s saying a lot.”

A little more shade was shown towards the Seahawks than the Giants and Texans for going with an unproven QB.  I definitely think Lock’s potential is beyond that of Jones and Mills.  I like underdogs so I am going to be watching this closely.
The 2023 QBs might look good now but expect that the flaws will be exposed when they get under the post season draft microscope.

The Ringer's Steven Ruiz believes Drew Lock would represent a "smoother transition" for the Seahawks' post-Russell Wilson offense.

Physically talented and mostly disastrous as a passer in three years with the Broncos, Lock will compete with veteran Geno Smith for Seattle's Week 1 starting gig after the team dealt Russell Wilson to Denver this offseason. Ruiz argued Lock's athleticism would bring continuity to a Seahawks offense accustomed to Wilson's scrambling and ad hoc playmaking. "In terms of overall talent, there isn’t a whole lot separating Smith and Lock," Ruiz said. "Stylistically, though, they aren’t similar at all. So the outcome of this battle will likely come down to which method Carroll and Co. prefer: Smith’s steadier decision-making, or Lock’s more cavalier approach. ... Opting for Smith would be a bigger departure from the Wilson-centric offense, while going with Lock would be a smoother transition given his ability to create outside of the system." Smith in 2021 was passable as the Seahawks starter while Wilson was sidelined. He threw four touchdowns and no interceptions in run-heavy attacks during his three starts. While neither QB will offer much fantasy appeal, Smith would certainly be better for Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.

We've seen this movie before in Denver between Lock and Bridgewater...so we already know how it will end.

Drew showed marginal improvement last year in terms of decision-making and going through progressions. But three years in you've either proven you have it between the ears or you don't.

Then why did Sam Darnold not only cost a 2nd for the panthers but got his 5th year gaurenteed?  Some guys, like Lock, just keep getting chance after chance no matter how many times they completely bungle an opportunity.

🤣

Old Pete the Cheat.  Got to love his shameless spinning.  My guess is Tennessee and Atlanta wouldn't trade Willis or Ridder for Lock, and I am 100 percent Pittsburgh wouldn't trade Pickett for him.

Next Pete will be pimping Lock as the best QB in Seahawks history and a first ballot HOFer
It's not that far fetched. Obviously no team would trade for him now. But pre-NFL Lock graded out at least as good as Pickett. He would have definitely been drafted over Willis and Ridder. And remember this is the NFL. In 2019, Haskins and Jones were both first round picks, ahead of Lock.

My guess the entire crop of QBs from this draft will be the next Drew Lock in 4-5 years. This was a very uninspiring class.

Drew Lock was basically a throw-in lottery ticket in the Wilson deal so don't really see a valid comparison with Darnold.

On a side note, how awesome is it that Geno Smith is still contending for a starting job in this league. I mean good for him.

Also the Rams made one of the greatest trades in the modern NFL for Stafford. I don't think the Broncos will end up doing as well but a franchise QB that is a potential HoF QB is worth at least 5 first round picks, maybe much more.
