Eyewitnesses told the Daily News that Geno Smith was "was up in (IK Enemkpali’s) face and pointed/touched his face" and "deserved it."

Sources told the New York Post that Enemkpali was furious at Smith for failing to reimburse the $600 that the linebacker shelled out for airline tickets and limos for Smith to attend a July 11 football camp for kids. Geno backed out a few days before the event due to the death of his brother's best friend. Regardless of the circumstances, breaking the starting quarterback's jaw in two places is never warranted. Although it seems some in the Jets' locker room don't see it that way. "That’ll get a man hit every time, especially one that hasn’t earned respect," a source said about the finger pointing.

Enemkpali already has debuted with the Bills. After Friday night's game, he said a number of former teammates have called to wish him well.

"They called to see how I'm doing and called to check on me," he said.

prob want to stay on his good side so he doesn't punch them in the face.

 
Marshall is roommates with Geno and is the only reason he went to New York. I was higher on Marshall with Geno at QB just because they are tight.

Maccagnan allowed it was possible, but "not likely." Maccagnan alluded to Smith missing in the neighborhood of four games, meaning he'd be a good bet to return after New York's Week 5 bye. Whether or not Smith will be coming back as a starter depends entirely on how Ryan Fitzpatrick fares in his absence. Fitz's odds of keeping the job are better than 50-50.

Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will step in during Smith's absence, but what happens when Smith returns? According to head coach Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan, it will likely be Smith's team once again.

"No, I still feel the same way about him," Bowles said of Smith to Mike Francesa on WFAN radio via NJ.com. "We've just got to get him healthy and get him some reps, and we're going to pick up where we left off. Hopefully, he doesn't lose too much mentally, but you've got to be out there to throw, so we he gets back, we've got get him as many chances as we can."

Geno may be the dumbest QB I have ever seen.

He has no concept of throwing the ball away to avoid losing yardage.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said Geno Smith "would definitely be a possibility" at quarterback if Ryan Fitzpatrick leaves in free agency.
"I wasn't here when Geno was a starter, but Geno did have a very good offseason for us last year," Maccagnan said. "The way the season unfolded last year for him, he never really had a chance to go out there and compete for the job. So he's a bit of an unknown, really." Smith can take solace in the fact that a tepid endorsement is better than no endorsement at all. If Fitzpatrick does leave, it sounds like the Jets view Geno as a last resort. Smith is entering the final year of his rookie deal.

I think Geno's better than public perception and the difference between Fitz and him is not that great and certainly not as great as some people think. When he played he really did have crap to work with.  He's made some boneheaded plays and that's probably part of the reason for it.  With that said, public perception does make a difference and if they go with Geno and don't sign Fitz and it doesn't work out, they will look like idiots.

In other words, come home soon, Ryan Fitzpatrick. There's little reason to expect tangible progress from Smith this season, and the Jets know it. That's why they drafted Christian Hackenberg. The Jets know they'll be in major trouble under center if Fitz doesn't re-sign.

Coach Todd Bowles thinks Geno Smith can be the Jets’ starter.
"I think Geno can be a good starter, but he’s got to prove it in training camp like everybody else," Bowles said. "He’s been in the system a year. We’ll see what he does." It’s not more than coachspeak, but the Jets have thrown support behind Smith all offseason. Despite a standstill in contract talks, Ryan Fitzpatrick remains likely to be the Week 1 starter.

I'm really starting to get the feeling that Geno Smith is the team's starting QB this season - I think perhaps Maccagnan thinks its best for the franchise to move in that direction and that he's trying to make Fitzpatrick look like he's being unreasonable (and to some extent he is) so that the team can save some face with the section of the fanbase that is screaming for the team to bring him back.

Surprisingly I think the majority of the fans I know and that call into talk radio are siding with the team and not the player which is very unusual.

 
On Sunday, coach Todd Bowles was noncommittal on Geno Smith's job security as the Jets' No. 2 quarterback.
"Until we make a change there won’t be (a change)," Bowles said. "Right now they’re all playing and we’re trying to see who sorts out what." Bryce Petty is coming off a big preseason game where he threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns in one half of action, albeit against the Redskins' backup defense. If Petty wins the No. 2 job, Smith could be placed on the trade block.
