QB Jameis Winston, NYG (11 Viewers)

Just for fun, here's a blurb about Peyton's 1998 rookie preseason game against the Chargers and Ryan Leaf:

Manning, playing into the third quarter for the first time in the preseason, was 11 for 21 for 123 yards but twice had passes intercepted.

On the flip side, Andrew luck went 10/16 for 188 and 2 TD's, while Vince Young was 4/11 for 56 and 0. Sometimes, good QB's look good right away, and sucking isn't a harbinger of greatness.

None of this is relevant in any way to determining how successful or unsuccessful Jameis Winston will be.

Personally, after reading about the work ethic of Mariota and Winston, I see this as being the first time ever that two QB's drafted #1 and #2 overall both end up being great players.

Why does one of them have to fail?

No one has to fail. Or succeed. And if they do, it'll have nothing to do with their respective preseason performances. Which is why the inevitable Manning/Leaf preseason nonsense deserves a counterpoint.

I posted the Manning/Leaf "nonsense" precisely for that reason. Your Luck nonsense helps make the point. Lots of people were posting nonsense saying Winston was going to suck because of his first preseason game. I was just pointing out that it's nonsensical to judge by watching one preseason game.
 
Just a gut feeling.....I think he's more Leaf/JaMarcus than Luck/Manning.

I could be totally wrong, but I just don't feel good about him.....and yea I took Mariota over him a rook draft. To me it was simple. Both have tons of talent. Mariotas got more between his ears. We'll see how both react when the chips are really down.....which we're likely to see for both sooner than later. Titans and bucs pretty much suck and both were drafted to be the respective savior of their franchises. That's a lot of pressure. And its not like they got JaMarcus Russell money.

They are, but the over studying thing goes back to fsu. Him and Jalen Ramsey were known to be in the facility extremely late at night.

 
Bucs’ Jameis Winston gets his first preseason start at Raymond James

Now that he is a grizzled veteran of one game, Tampa Bay Bucs‘ quarterback Jameis Winston will try to be a more efficient quarterback.

Winston starts for the second time for the Bucs after an up-and-down first game against the Minnesota Vikings. Winston hit nine of 19 passes, but he had a quarterback rating of only 48.4 yards largely due to a slow start.

In his second game, tonight against the Bengals at Raymond James Stadium, Winston will try to be better, but it will not be easier against a Bengals defense that forced quarterbacks to the third-worst quarterback rating in the NFL and allowed the third-fewest touchdown passes in the league.

“We have to (start fast) as a team,” Bucs’ coach Lovie Smith said. “Of course Jameis is a part of that. Last time we played Cincinnati (last season), we had a fast start defensively – got a takeaway on the first play of the game. So, yes, as a football team, we need to start faster. We had one turnover last (week). We don’t want to have any turnovers on the offensive side. We want to really win that turnover ratio.”

Quarterback coach Mike Bajakian said he just wants Winston to play better.

“Progress,” he said. “Again, making some of the throws that he missed and being on the same page with his wide receivers and tight ends. Things like that and playing the pitch and catch game. Obviously, continued progress in management of the offense and just overall, general improvement. (There’s) a couple things physically he can improve, but again, every day he’s coming out to work. Every day he’s getting better.

“He works hard at it. I would say, again, I don’t really have a baseline to compare it to but I would say compared to other guys, he’s picked up the offense quicker than I anticipated he would.”

Winston was pleased with his tempo for the first week. He is excited, he said, to play his first game at Raymond James Stadium.

“I don’t even know how much of my family is going to be attending this game,” Winston said. “I can’t speak of how excited and anxious I am to get out there in Raymond James (Stadium) and play. That’s one thing me and Kenny Bell discussed before the game: we have one profession where we can actually say we aren’t going to do a job today; we get to go out there and play. Play and have fun and play the game of football that we’ve been playing since we were young.

“I was just excited to be out there playing football. I had high expectations for our offense and we went out there and I exceeded my (expectations) of playing, just being able to be a quarterback for an NFL team and go out there and play against another team. So I was happy at that fact. But, you know, there is always room for improvement and we are going to get better every week.”

His footwork is still a work in progress, but his release seemed pretty good on that sideline route he ripped.

 
As Winston's career moves forward, hoping Tampa continues to invest in that line. 2 rookies this year but the center is nearing the end and a tackle will be important soon. If Sims can become an above average 3rd down back - great, if not that would be a very nice piece to have as well.

 
The good:

@SI_DougFarrar: One thing I'm really liking here is that Winston is throwing with different arcs/velocities. A lot of young guys just rip it.

And the not so good:

@SI_DougFarrar: Jameis had the same issues with A-gap fake blitzes against the Vikings. He's going to see it until he stops hurrying his throws vs. that.

 
He looked really good I thought. I think he's got some issues with holding on to the ball too long, but I'm not so sure that's even a bad thing at this point. He'll learn.

Also, I have 12th pick in a modified keeper league. I'm praying Jameis is still there. If he could do something where nobody else wants him that would be great. Maybe some sort of minor social foe paw which makes old white guys freak out.

Sure, maybe he can get accused of rape again. Old white guys freak out about little folkway oopsies like that.
