I’ve been a harsh critic of Fields. But after the injury to Daniels, I picked up Fields during this week’s WW run and I’m gonna be rolling with him for the foreseeable future. With the Jets being sellers at the deadline, I’m hoping he’s gonna play ROS without having to look over his shoulder. They have nothing to lose at this point.

FTR, I chose him over the likes of McCarthy, Lawrence, Rodgers and Penix. I just feel like I need Fields’ upside to remain competitive.

This has reached absurd proportions. Fields was a very good runner in Chicago. Maybe he needs to be used like Tebow or Hill. It can be extremely effective. I get why coaches loathe doing it (boring, locker room issues) but it’s very effective. And if they won’t do that play Taylor who really deserves a shot more than any other veteran backup QB in the league.

I don’t get to watch the Jets, as I’m on the West Coast. Are they running a lot of run pass option, read option/ zone read, etc.? I just assumed they were. If not, they absolutely should be doing it (a la Tim Tebow circa 2011).

I would not be so sure.

I did have to start him in multiple places this week but did not like it all and forecast a bad week. My reason for negativity is most of his production is second half/comeback mode related and the Browns are the not the team to put you in that position.,

What could not be forecast was the crushing blow to Fields and any Jet's pass catchers fantasy value yesterday was the two special teams TD's. That was a double whammy which cost them two full drives and put them in position to not be in comeback mode.

I view him as a fairly high upside, at least if/when Garrett is healthy, but very risky start for ROS. Most of that risk is associated with the fact that in order for him to do well they probably need to fall behind, and then you got to worry if he gets benched.

But yesterday that game script could not have possibly been worse.

Should they call more design stuff? Perhaps, but I'd guess most of his big time rushing success is when the play breaks down and he escapes the pocket. Would love to see data on his running success in his career on designed runs vs off script. I think when the defense stops respecting your ability to pass it makes running, designed or not, more difficult.

agree but its not just designed runs - its clear hes not a great drop back passer. Id have liked to have seen much more rollouts, RPOs, quick passes - way too many drop 6 steps back and scan the filed where he has shown he holds it too long.

Cleveland D is decent - but an NFL QB just cant put up those kind of numbers.

IDK, it's a Thursday night game so I have a feeling it's going to be Fields again. Even if he's named the starter though you have to believe a change is always lurking ATP. Earlier in the year I was skeptical that they'd bench him for Taylor because they had to see what they had in him. Now? I think we've all seen enough. As the stats @dutch posted show, 4 of 8 games with him under center this season they have less than 50 yards passing. That's not giving your team a chance.

I can't believe the passing stats I'm looking at for Fields, they a truly mind boggling. I'm talking for the entirety of his career and especially this year, not just this game. When you lead your team to -10 yads passing in a game that's something special. Only comp that comes to mind is Nate "The Human Turnover" Peterman and even Peterman may have been a better option at qb.

When your qb is as bad as Fields that may be the right approach.

Why wouldn't you shift the target and include another absolute stinker for your narrative thrust? You could say, "He's been under 75 yards four times!"

Oh, you did use four. Sorry. Total team passing yards includes sacks, doesn't it? Carry on.

You could have also said, "This guy led his team to negative yardage one game! What a maroon!"

here’s the thing…..if you are trying to win some games for the locker room and to properly assess what garbage you have left on offense, you can’t start fields anymore. taylor will last a game or 2 until he dies. i’d just throw cook out there and see if he has any skill to at least be a backup.

but….the goal right now is to lose games and maximize draft position. with that in mind, fields will help them lose.

Yes, Fields had several inaccurate throws, but he didn’t look atrocious. You may as well get the younger QB more reps in hopes he can continue to develop as a passer because you know Tyrod definitely isn’t a long term answer. Fields likely isn’t the answer either, but the Jets may as well see if Fields can progress because they invested so much in him and the Jets aren’t making the playoffs this season regardless of who they have at QB from here on out.

I don't want to assume anything, but im wondering if you have watched him all year? He's been atrocious and last night being any kind of improvement is a sad commentary on where we are with him. As I just said in the Jets thread, he's definitively not the answer either, but maybe Taylor plays almost competent QB and allows you to see what you have in Mason Taylor, Metchie, Mitchell and A.Smith. Fields throwing for 100 yards or less every other game doesn't give you that opportunity.

real life fields simply can’t play the position. he is a wonderful runner. but every play and an nfl offense can’t be built around: drop back, hitch and don’t throw because you can’t, then run. the jets have no passing game, at least not an nfl passing game. fields is wildly inaccurate and has no touch. he was whizzing balls at guys 5-10 yards away. mitchell had stone hands, but fields has to put a ball every now and again where it has to be with the right pace. everyone knows he isn’t any type of answer as a starter and has no future here unless he has a sever restructure for backup money. every then, how can you use him for 2-4 games if needed? i am dead serious, he gives zach wilson a run for being awful. and i don’t think i’ve seen a worse multiple jet game starter than wilson. sure, pat ryan, matt robinson, rick mirer (the gold standard), et al. having taylor play games is pointless too, what are we trying to see from him? also, taylor is a human injury.

he under threw mitchell, but mitchell shoulda had it. i’ll give you that. but it’s the blind squirrel theory, every now and then he’s bound to trip over a nut. he can really only complete passes that travel about 5 yards in the air. his ball is left, right, up, down. his pace is terrible. his anticipation on breaks is non existent. if a guy isn’t wide open, he won’t throw. i don’t think he understands a completion window. blecch
