QB Pickett To Fill "Slash" Role For 49ers? (1 Viewer)

Thought this one was kind of interesting. From the Footballguys News Blogger:

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan recently said that quarterback Cody Pickett might be worked on to the field to play a little wide receiver and special teams in 2006, as well as fill the "slash" role with the team. "We've met with him (about an expanded role)," Nolan said. "Some of the passing days, he went out and played a little wide receiver. We're trying to give him a role of 'slash.'"

So that QB/RB/WR they drafted has a backup now?

 I was actually very surprised to see this little excerpt in Scout.com tonight, so I thought it might be worth a thread to see if other folks were as surprised at this seemingly unexpected quote from Nolan.

LOL, didn't they just draft a backup QB that is a billion times faster and more athletic than Pickett? OK, maybe not a billion because of those rodeo genes from his dad, but this smells fishy.

He played some scout team WR. They're also holding him out of NFLE so he can learn Turner's playbook.

This actually makes me wonder if they are serious about Robinson at RB and now still have a need for a WR-Slash type from somewhere else?

A lot of Robinson at RB had to do with injuries to Gore/Barlow.

Sure, but maybe in the OTAs he's looked good enough that they want to keep him there for training camp and not move him to QB/WR. So they start talking about doing that for Pickett. I think that Robinson could become a NFL RB faster than he can become a NFL WR. His hands really aren't that great, but his speed, power and instincts with the ball are. Long way to go, of course. But it's also not like Gore and Barlow have lit the world on fire.

This is bizarre because of Robinson but also because of the QB convert they drafted last year. Did Picket show them something when he was running for his live during that couple of starts he got last year?

Seeing the PFW Whispers that FamilyMatters posted, I'm wondering if this has more to do with Pickett falling out of favor as the 3rd QB than needing to fill a Slash role?

ever since I saw Hostetler play WR I think nothing of it. Granted I was thoroughly shocked by Kordell but otherwise it's a good sound theory....to ignore it :D ETA no disrespect to orig poster, always appreciate the info and this makes for some fun creative offensive thoughts

Certainly, the opportunity is there for Robinson or anyone at RB or WR. As you say, no one is really standing out at either spot.To me, the telling thing about Pickett is that they didn't allocate him to Europe. There's a spark.
