Question about the '72 Dolphins record (1 Viewer)

- If the Pats or Colts go 16-0 regular season and win 1 playoff game which will give them 17 straight victories in same season, but lose in the championship game will that end this record?

- Or do you have to go 19-0 which would include Superbowl victory same year?

What we do know, is that 16 straight wins in same season to tie the Dolphins record is not acceptable to the old farts. Steelers did that 3 years ago in 2004 (lost in week 1 then won 16 straight before losing in Championship game). They kept openning the bottles since.

Also we know that carryover years don't count to the old fart either. Pats (I think) won 17+ in a row overlapping 2 seasons a few years back. That was discredited as well by the Shula and the old farts, althought to me that is tougher to do than "same season".

What's it going to take guys to send them off to "shuffleboard land" and never hear the popping bottles from them again?

My understanding is that it involves a perfect season; culminating in a Super Bowl victory. But I'm not 100% sure of that; just what I seem to remember reading the last time they did a piece on Buonicotti and the Dolphins tradition.

Yawn.Who cares...

Question about the '72 Dolphins record, What will make them stop opening up the champagne?

Eventually nobody will be alive to pop the champagne.

I keep having to post this, but the champagne story's a myth. Unless you count two guys as the whole 1972 team.

Holding court with the King of Miami

On the rumor that [shula] keeps a bottle of champagne on hand to celebrate the end of another team's run at NFL perfection: "That's bull----. [Dolphins] **** Anderson and [Nick] Buoniconti lived across the street from each other down in Coral Gables. When the last undefeated team got beat, they'd go out in the parking lot, pop open a bottle of champagne and toast each other. They were too cheap to invite the rest of us down to the party. But everybody thinks we're a bunch of angry old men who can't wait for that last team to get beat.

"If that happens [a team goes undefeated], I'm going to be the first guy to call that coach and congratulate him. And our players will do the same thing. But until it happens, that's a record we're proud of."

The Bears won all their regular season games in both 1934 and 1942 but lost the championship game both times.

And the 1948 Cleveland Browns went 15-0 and won the title but it was in the All-America Football Conference, not the NFL.
