Question for Football guys.com Users (1 Viewer)

How many of you guys bring a laptop to the Draft? Is it frowned upon? This will be my 1st year bringing one DD baby!!!
In my league that drafts in person, I don't know if it would be frowned upon but it would be ridiculed mercilessly and probably would have beer poured on it intentionally.

I bring one every year now. I think I started a trend. The only thing is, they do not have the DD. They have something else they are using. I guess they think mine might be a magic laptop! :goodposting: What they don't know won't hurt them. I love it.

For money leagues... no way. Dont want to screw up my drafting using the computer.

For some of the smaller/lighter stuff I'll bring one along at times. But its a handicap.

I do make heavy use of the computer leading up to the draft, obviously.

I think I got heckled four years ago when I first brought a laptop. This year, I expect 7 of the 12 owners to bring one.Screw what other owners think and bring it. What's the point of having a tool like the DD and printing cheatsheets out of it?

curious how it screws it up?

There's nothing wrong with bringing a laptop. I know of at least 5 guys who'll bring one this year. Most of the guys who give crap about laptops that I know of are dead money donators who bring 4 month old magazines (and not even FBG's mag at that!!!).

It's your league, your team, your $$$!!!

I bring mine every year and I'd say about half do. I also bring my rankings as a backup.

With the DD though, I find that as others have said, it's kind of a handicap. I mean, it's great to use to track the draft, check bye weeks, schedules, and depth charts; but too often I find myself looking at only the Top 20 "Overall" list in the later rounds. At least a couple of times in my draft I'll take a player from this list, then look at my own rankings that I brought and say "dang, I shoulda taken this guy!". Been seriously debating whether or not to bring it this year for this reason.

On a lighter note; last year the host's laptop was not working properly so he wheeled out is PC. Extension cord, 30 foot eithernet cable and everything. On top of that he had an old school CRT Monitor. Anytime he fumbled/hesitated on a pick we'd needle him asking "got enough radiation over there?" etc..... :ptts:

I find it to be much slower then using my sheets and a pen.I have a faster time staying on top of everything, of which is most important, is who will I take at my pick compared to what the trends are at the draft.I make a very handy 5" x 11" draft binder, that is in small print and has everything listed. Everything is still very readible. On the CPU you spend too much time scrolling/clicking/searching when you play in big leagues with big rosters and full IDP.I also get up and move around at my drafts when we use the conference rooms and big draft boards.I find interaction with other owners is essential for long term success. CPU is very bad in that regard.I talk trades during the draft. Move up and down all the time. People like to talk close and hush-hush when discussing trades.I trade more then almost anyone when it comes to draft pick trades, and everything at my finger tips is essential. Would never happen with a cpu.In all my years (which is many) I start being called over by other owners who have become very comfortable with me and they will ask questions at times (like "whats the status of the GB kicking job" or something like that) and I always can give a very quick and easy answer. Often time I will offer up a better alternative (like "Olindo Mare is still there, just take him, hes better.") and it serves me a great deal in the long term, which again wouldnt be possible with a cpu. If you are an unactive owner who will drone on through a draft, then maybe its for you. Also if you dont have a system in place which works, then by all means a cpu can be a big improvement. Especially if you are just taking a magazine list. Ive used the cpu, its just a big step back for a technique that is "dialed in". The CPU is a really good way to save time for a commisioner or league secretary. But thats not my focus - saving input time after the draft. The focus is winning.

I was the first to bring a laptop to the draft, and was mocked unmercifully. Two years later, the count is up to 5.

This thread seriously has me thinking of NOT bringing my laptop.
How many guys brought one last year? Were they the sharks? If it's a new league, you need to go in there empty-handed and then try to draft Tiki Barber in the first round. That should soften up the picks around you in the following rounds. Then mow them down.

Dont even worry about any ridicule, if thats entering into your decision.
No not at all. My first post in this thread got me thinking "outloud" about how effective the laptop/DD is. Last year was a disaster as I had TWO laptops. 1 to run the draft hooked up to the projector and 1 to run my own draft. I did ok, but was flustered. Everybody jumped in and gave me a hard time for not updating the picks fast enough as well. :lmao: This year they can track their own drafts and place the stickers on the board. I'll be assembling the greatest team to ever grace this 7 year old money league.

Ha, LOL. So far the FBG/DD count is 3 including myself. A few others bring laptops. Others bring mags or printouts from who knows where. Generally though, we have a solid group of owners. Only 1 true guppy, but he always tries to improve his team the whole year so he gets respect. Just not that great of a drafter.

no way can you be faster with paper/pen then using the dd.

Why the doubt?I am way way way way way way way way way way way way way faster. Way faster. And I can do it on my feet moving around.
That's what I'm saying. This thread has me recalling my pre-laptop days. Kickin' back with my hand crafted VBD as instructed by the Mark Wimer article back in 2001! "who has time to shuffle through magazines when there's pizza to eat?" or something like that. I always remember that line!Whatup MW?

i have a lanyard set up where i can have my laptop around my neck/shoulders. shut'er closed (in sleep mode) mosey on over with beers in hand to wheel'n deal.

Two owners use the DD at my live draft. They ALWAYS hold things up several times.

I am without a doubt faster with my pen + paper system than if I use a laptop.

Well ####, then you got me beat.Watching you would be worth the price of admission alone. :lmao:
its a thing of beauty.

I prefer to just have pen and paper. I do all my prework on the laptop but I can see allot more at 1x with the hard copies. The laptop slows me down.

I've always bring my computer, but I have never used DD. I am planning on using DD this year. In prior years, I brought my VBD sheet and computer (just for any last minute tweaking/news searching). I'm still going to bring my VBD sheet this year, but I'll give DD a whirl and if it flusters me then I have something to fall back on.

Nearly everyone in my league brings a laptop but me. The draft dominator is a great tool, but it can be closely duplicated with an updated cheatsheet, depth chart, ADP and VBD rankings.

I love using DD at the draft. I do enough mock drafts and tweak the projections enough that I never "miss" a guy I wanted to draft, or slow down the draft as a whole. I have a pretty good idea of who to watch out for in each round. I also create a spreadsheet with targeted players by round, and "alt-tab" back and forth from that to DD.

We usually wait for the nimrods that are shuffling through 15 sheets of white paper - ADP on one, bye week on another, overall rankings, position rankings, yada, blah, yada...what a joke.

Someone like me who is not very good with computers, would be very hesitant in using a laptop in a live draft where you must type in updates quickly. If you are able to do this then its the way to go, but if not pen and paper is more comfy. I just wish I could test this theory...I have played FF for about 12-13 years now, but have never been to a live draft. Can't find enough people near me that are interested.
