Question for leagues that have Special Teams (1 Viewer)

How do you assign points to ST?

  • Yes, the worst team in the league is probably the highest scorer. Just the way it is.

  • Only score punt return yards.

So, we've had Special Teams in our IDP league for a number of years, but we've only scored TDs. No yardage...but we want to add that to the scoring system. Someone raised an interesting point this morning - the worst team in the league probably has the most return yards because they're always scored upon. More kick-offs = more return yards. So, how does your league handle it? See above.

TIA

Why have team slots in an IDP? My IDP uses all individual players and each individual player can get return yards/tds. I think it's 15yd/pt for the yardage. Adds value to offensive and defensive players, like Sproles, McGee (not sure this year, maybe McKelvin), Breaston, etc etc.

edit: But if you wanted to use teams for special teams, including yards, what's the difference if the bad teams have alot of yards? Draft accordingly. It's not like you'd be selecting Cleveland for their defense, you're selecting them for their special teams (essentially Cribbs). The Lions might have more passing yards than some good NFL teams this year, I don't think anyone alters their system to adjust for that because the Lions will probably suck.

That's true to some extent, but it's not a rule. While dominant defenses hinder their special teams, there are plenty of bad teams that also have bad kick return teams--and that's one reason they aren't any good. Typically there's a nice spread of good/bad teams in a system that rewards you for having an excellent returner. Our system:

0.06 Yard

1.00 Touchdown

-1.00 KO Ret Attempt

-0.30 P Ret Attempt

2.00 P or FG Block

Last year's teams, best to worst:

728) 56.8 3.6 BUF-9 p

729) 56.6 3.5 RAI-9

730) 54.6 3.4 SEA-7

731) 49.1 3.1 CHI-5

732) 47.5 3.0 TB -8

733) 46.2 2.9 SF -6 p

734) 44.2 2.8 NE -8 k

735) 41.6 2.6 NO -5 k p

736) 40.7 2.5 TEN-7 k

737) 40.3 2.5 ATL-4 k

738) 39.8 2.5 PHI-4 k

739) 38.1 2.4 WAS-8 k

740) 36.9 2.3 CAR-4 k

741) 36.6 2.3 NYG-10 k

742) 36.6 2.3 HOU-10 p

743) 36.5 2.3 JAC-7 p

744) 36.4 2.3 SD -5 k p

745) 35.9 2.2 NYJ-9 k p

746) 34.3 2.1 MIN-9 k

747) 32.1 2.0 ARI-4 p

748) 31.8 2.0 CLE-9 p

749) 31.7 2.0 STL-9 p

750) 31.6 2.0 CIN-8 p

751) 31.2 2.0 DET-7 p

752) 31.0 1.9 GB -5

753) 29.4 1.8 DAL-6

754) 27.8 1.7 DEN-7 p

755) 25.3 1.6 KC -8 p

756) 23.5 1.5 MIA-6 k p

757) 21.9 1.4 BAL-7 k

758) 17.0 1.1 IND-6 k p

759) 15.3 1.0 PIT-8 k

ETA: If you compare these to the actual NFL stats, you'll see that teams averaged 66.1 kick returns and 34 punt returns. The "K' next to a name meant the team had a below average amount of kick returns. The "P" means a below average amount of punt returns. As you see, it's pretty distributed.

Thanks, fellas. I'm personally set, as I have both Chicago and Cleveland, but did think it was an interesting wrinkle.

I have played in leagues which do both. I find I'd rather have special teams as its own slot than adding return points to individual players. There is some small amount of skill involved in remembering to adjust for/include player return yardage in your projections. Unless you have a high points for it (and 1/15 probably qualifies as high in my opinion for individual players, but not for ST units) it is still seldom a driving force though. But when it is its own position, to do well at it you need to make predictions on teams overall return yardage. That often involves making predictions about how good a team's defense will be, since return yardage is driven by kick returns more often than by punts. I'd much rather see people making that whole new set of rankings than tweaking a few players projections scattered across RB, WR, CB and S. Not saying that's the only way to do it, but you asked why, and I think it adds more chance for skill to rise to the top.For the OP, yes, the worst defenses are normally high in our list of ST units. I'm fine with that, as it is something that lends itself to being predicted. Just like we use punters with gross punting yardage and the best punters are often on the bad teams. But that's not a given it's always the worst teams. Great returners like Hester, Cribbs, Andre Davis, Dante Hall a few years ago, etc, can make a huge difference. Last year the bad defense teams seemed to dominate the ST units, but the year before the Browns were #1 for us, Texans #2, and Bears #4. Those teams ranked 16th, 21st, and 23rd in total points against, so they were average to below average defenses, but not the worst ones in the league despite being 3 of our top 4 ST units. Mainly it was that they had great returners that year who had a lot of long returns and a lot of touchdowns on them. And FWIW, our scoring system for ST units is 1/10 for either type of return yardage and 6 pt TDs. Again, I want a system that lends itself to skill being able to make predictions... just scoring TDs or having TD heavy scoring does the opposite. If I was doing the scoring system and was giving return points to individual players I'd probably have it more like 1/30. In my other league which doesn't use ST units, we have 1/35 yardage.I'll also note, my league has high scoring in general as it has higher PPR and IDP scoring than most leagues, and we start 2 to 3 times as many players as each week (26 starters, 55 man roster)... so 1/10 works for us and doesn't make their game to game variation too much nor is a big game by a ST unit going to dominate a week for anyone. For other league setups I might go with less return yardage points to avoid that happening.
