Question regarding keeper league rules (1 Viewer)

I play in a league where we are allowed to keep one player. We may designate the same player as our keeper two times, so we get him for 3 consecutive years. Everyone's keeper essentially acts as the #1 pick, and we start the actual drafting in round #2 (pick 13). This year we had some legal, but shaky transactions right before the draft. For those in keeper leagues, what type of rules do you have in place to deal with the following:

- Teams basically swapping keepers that will be draft eligible. We can trade any player until it's time to draft, in the case that you have two studs on your roster. And even if you are about to lose your keeper, you can still move him to someone else for a draft pick before the draft starts. This year one guy was losing Brees, and the other guy was losing Manning....so they basically swapped them for one another. Now they can be kept for an additional 3 years.

- Teams basically giving away keepers. LT was traded for a 7th round pick. MJD was shipped for an 8th rounder. After Brees was swapped, he was traded for a 10th rounder because the guy also had Turner. The draft is only 13 rounds, so these players were given away for very little.

TIA for responses.

#1. Make your rules say that a player can only be protected for 3 years. If I protect Tomlinson for two years and then deal him to you, you can only protect him for one year.#2. You can trade your keepers. No trades until protected lists are in.

No on is giving away players. If you can only keep one player you take whatever you can get for the ones you won't keep. A 7th rounder is fine.

I'm in a similar set up (we keep two guys, but can only keep them one additional year). We just have the rule that the keeper tag follows the player even if they were to be traded. So if I draft Adrian Peterson next year, he can be kept next year too, but is going back into the draft pool in two years no matter what- even if he isn't on my team. It's a simple enough rule to put in and will avoid the types of problems you are having.

:o That's the only way to do it. Our rule is that a player's value only resets when he's dropped from a team.

allowing trading of the non-keepers is ridiculous.
:) I would argue no trades can occur until players are kept. Otherwise you are talking about last years team.
This is exactly right. They're essentially keeping more than one player. I have no problem with the Manning/Brees swap, but trading non-kept players for draft picks that will be kept seems like it's clearly against the rules (or at the very least, the spirit of the rules). If, for example, you've got Tomlinson and Turner, and you decide to keep Tomlinson, and you trade Turner for a 4th round pick, then you should then either be able to keep Tomlinson OR the 4th round pick you got for Turner, but not both.

Otherwise, you might as well just keep your entire team and trade draft picks all over the place.

I mean, I completely understand that you should be able to benefit from drafting well and having multiple studs on your team, but landing a top 3 QB for Brees for a 10th rounder in a 13 round draft just doesn't "seem" right. Or MJD (projected #2 back by some) for an 8th. That's all.....

Eliminate the rule that you can only keep a player for a certain period of time. If you want a player on a certain owners team find a way to trade for him.
