Hey guys I am new to IDP.. I see lots of mention of which side a LB plays a weak side or strong.. which is better for his numbers and also is a 3-4 def worst than a 4-3? I understand its a novice question but I have to start somewhere. I have been playing ordinary fantasy ball for yrs and started a idp league this year with the def scoring approx. 50% of the total team score. I need all the help I can get. Thanks!

also.. it is a slow start dynasty...but for the first years purposes we will be able to keep 2 off and 2 def players with the option of one more at either position with a penalty. With the scoring being close to 50/50 how soon would you start drafting defense? From what I gathered most leagues don't start on def players until the later rounds.. but I don't believe its a 50/50 cut for them. The top LB was close to the top RB though the drop off was deeper for RB by the top 24. I am thinking though that a low pick in the first round can counter the top rb by grabbing the top lb...especially since many NFL teams playing follow the leader seem to be jumping on the rbbc and short yardage rbs more than ever. I may be able to get some solid yardage backs in the later rounds. (high performance .1 per yd rush and rec.)...any thoughts??

here are the scoring rules:

Forced Fumble = 4pts

Takeaways = 4pts

Solo Tackle = 2 pts

Assist Tackle =1 pt

Defended Pass = 1 pt

another thing to note here.. and this is the monkey wrench...11 out of 12 of us are new to IDP.. so I have no idea of tendencies with these guys.

I think we get this question newly posted about every two weeks with the exact same title. It like de javu. My advice would be to do a search, there is tons of info out there explaining the basics.

There is a post on the front page of this forum in which a lot of vets have given their opinions on when to begin drafting IDPs.

You can find it here

Without getting into a whole lot of detail, player values usually break out along these lines.

4-3 DE > stud 4-3 undertackle > 3-4 DE > 4-3 DT >> 3-4 NT

4-3 MLB > 4-3 WLB/3-4 ILB > 4-3 SLB/3-4 OLB

4-3 SS > 4-3 FS/Cover2 CB/3-4 SS > CB

Depending on a particular player's skill set and particular defensive scheme and your scoring system, though, there is a lot of variability in the above generalities.

In general, players on the strong side (except the strong safety who's a level removed from the fray) see more blockers and less opportunities to make tackles.

Ask plenty of questions, use the search function, and play around with your league's scoring system. You'll pick it up quickly.

John Norton writes a great article every year about the fantasy value of each position. I don't remember if it's subscriber content or not.
