Questions for Mark Curnutte - Bengals Beat Writer (1 Viewer)

Mark Curnutte covers the Bengals for the Cincinnati Enquirer, and he also has a blog. He's also an excellent writer who won an award in 1994 for a 7 day series on race relations in Cincinnati. We'll most definitely be asking him about the role Kenny Irons will play (both short and long term), the race for #3 WR spot and future of Chris Henry, and the mess at LB. As always, we want to know what you want to know, and will try to get a few questions in on behalf of the pool.

Will their top draft pick LBers play in 07? chances of

Chatman replace Henry for 8 games?

How's Levi's knee?

Does he think the players will beging to behave better in 07?

As a writer for a team that "always lost" how much better is "always .500" really?

Coupled with Bri's Q of player behavior... Has the front office mentality of BPA shifted to accomodate a player's character given the rising importance of it and does he see the possiblity of future drafts focusing more on character, even if it may harm the BPA philosophy a bit?

FWIW I **believe** he wrote something on that already after Marvin said (more or less) they wouldn't draft any low character types in 07, and didn't. Still an interesting Q for Bloom to ask, just if ya feel like googling.

How does he think their line will shape up this year? How will Steinbach's void affect their offense?

What will they do with Odell Thurman?

Is Chris Perry done there?

Who will start at CB?

How much better will Palmer be this year compared to last year, since he isn't coming off of an injury...and also would like to hear how that affected him last year.

Is Marvin Lewis on the hot seat this year?

As a Bengal beatwriter... how many bailbondsmen, lawyers, courthouses and jails do you have on speed-dial?

Any chance Robert Geathers becomes an every down end or does he stay in rotation with Bryan Robinson?

Hobson has said Thurman will probably be last on the depth chart at WLB when re-instated. Has he seen Thurman? Any idea if he'll be in playing shape? Will the Bengals truly leave Brooks in the middle once Thurman is ready to play?

Ask him about Curnutte's report that Perry is out until October.

Will the Bengals ever switch to a 3-4?

Last year was a bad one as far as injuries go and yet they were still a competitive team. After what appears to be a tough start with injuries this year, is the team able to translate that experience into a playoff appearance this year? Do they believe they win in spite of the injuries?

Does he feel the defense will be improved this year?

:lmao: Really interested in Thurman. Reading between the lines, it seems like he's not going to be thrown away like Nicholson and I find it hard to believe they don't play him a lot if he can get over his apparent alcohol issue. Maybe I'm biased because I own him in a league, but it doesn't seem like his transgressions were as bad as some of the others on the Bengals.

As a Bengal homer, living about 5 miles from the stadium, I'll offer my predictions, which probably aren't that much different than Mark's.

1. Chris Perry is done. PUP list first 6 weeks and far too injury prone. Frankly Michigan used him up before the Bengals ever drafted him. Lots of talent but it was a bad pick to begin with.

2. Tab Perry, as of NOW, looks to be WR3 until Chris Henry returns. He does not have the speed to stretch the field but has as much heart as any Bengals WR, and he's not a jackass like the player he is replacing.

3. O-line IS a concern, for me anyway, at least early on until they've had some time to play as a unit. Both T's have leg problems and BIG Willie is getting up there. With that said, Bengals O-lines are well coached and always above average so there is room for optimism. Witworth takes over for Steiny...he can't pull the same as Steiny but his brute strength makes up for some of that

4. Defense could be the biggest surprise in '07, barring lots of injuries. ABrooks should be the Mike and will be a stud. He seems to have grown up a lot. Odell will, in my opinion, be on the opening day roster and will get plenty of PT BUT has a long way to go...lots of potential but a very addictive personality. Hartwell came over from ATL and should be the Will. Jenty will likely start as Sam. Hartwell's signing was huge and brought instant depth to a unit that looked woefully thin just two months ago. CB's are inexperienced but are very athletic and are playmakers. O'Neal is the wild card there. If he decides to "play" this year, they will get better as a unit as the season progresses. DJax and MWilliams will be fine as the safeties. My biggest concern is a pass rush, which is the case EVERY YEAR! I would not have tagged Justin Smith...just not worth the money BUT they were concerned of a downgrade without him, and the team sees the window of opportunity as now open. Gaethers SHOULD BE the starter on the other side. He had something like 10.5 sacks last year, and didn't start much of the time. Peko, the second year DT played so well that they felt like they could let big ol Sam Adams go.

5. Special Teams lost a lot of tacklers, but coach Simmons has been excellent the last few seasons. I believe he will be able to reload without a considerable drop off.

6. Playoffs by winning the AFC North with a slight shot at the big game

Just finished with Curnutte, and we got to address at least these questions (among others) - Curnutte answered the last one very decisively.
