Race for the 2015 NFC North Crown (1 Viewer)

First off, How are you?

Fans of all NFC North teams are welcome in here. This is your thread. There should be no telling folks to go back to their team's thread, because this is it, along, of course, with others.

Week 1

I watched the Packer/Bear game. The Bears ran all over the Packers. I was undecided if they were that good, or the Packers that bad. In the end I think it was a combination. The Packers were missing Morgan Burnett, Letroy Guion, and Datone Jones and then suffered injury at Middle Linebacker. This was not the defense the Packers will have out there in a few weeks. That said, the remaining Packers are suppose to be professional football players, but Forte made them look like semi-pros at best.

Alshon Jeffries looked hampered, and Martellus Bennett looked not yet in full form.

Packer stupid penalties made the game 8 points closer than it should have been, putting 4 points on the boards for the Bears, and taking 4 off for the Packers.

The Bears looked improved, but they are not going to be in this race come October. That is not to say that they won't decide the race by knocking off some other team further on down the road.

The Packers are out in front in the race and look the favorite, but a loss to Seattle next week would allow one of the Vikings or Lions to draw even as one of them necessarily wins next week.

The Vikings last night looked abysmal. Dropped passes, poorly thrown balls, not much of a run game, and Packer-like inability to stop the run. The preseason optimism, which seemed to me over the top, is now tempered, and in some circles has already turned to desperation. That said, I saw some crushing defensive hits by the Vike's backfield, Harrison Smith in particular. I saw growth in the game of Wallace who actually ran patterns other than fly routes. I think evaluation here gets set aside for a week. Watching Peterson next weeks for indications on where he stands will be interesting.

I did not see the Detroit game, but the story of their defeat makes one wonder how they will respond against the Vikes this week. I wonder if Stafford will ever make the next step in his development. It seems only a year ago an injured kid showed grit, re-entering a game to throw a pass. Now it is seven years and the round-faced, backward hat wearing jackass seems to have refused to grow. Calvin Johnson's best years are now or in the rear view mirror. Stafford needs to take the step forward this season, right now, or find himself Jay Cutler, but without the whiney face. I keep thinking Stafford will make the jump, but when I do I see him try to throw submarine style, off the wrong foot, into double coverage. the sad thing for him is that he occasionally makes that impossible stuff work which only encourages him. If he stuck to sound mechanics who knows where he would be.

This week the Division looks like it may be handed to the Packers. Who can say though, if Seattle beats them in Lambeau, they get another injury or so, and The Bears and either the Vikes or the Lions look good in victory over the other establishing a three way tie in the standings the complexion of the Division may look very different next week.

Very nice write up, DW. Great idea for a thread.

Can we sum up the division by saying one team has the goods at the most important position, and the other three haven't yet admitted they don't have a championship QB? Grossly oversimplified view but there's an element of truth.

This might be the most settled "franchise QB" division in the league. All four teams have committed high draft picks and/or a blockbuster trade and are saddled with long term guaranteed contracts to the four leaders. It's not even worth debating who is # 2/3/4 in the pecking order because the gap to Rodgers is so wide.

Lots of room for debate at other positions and comparing defenses. I think Detroit's defensive scheme is very good and by seasons end it will once again prove to be one of the leagues best. Not sure it's enough for more than 9 wins & another first round loss on the road.

I do not anticipate the Bears being in contention, but in the up/down schizophrenic NFL, you can't take them lightly. I don't think Minnesota is as bad as they looked last night. The fate of the Lions & Vikings is probably directly related to how well their respective o-lines control the line of scrimmage.

Ameer Abdullah has some serious wiggle. Not ready to send him to Canton yet, and this being the Lions, they'll find a way to give his touches to Joique, Theo & Zach. But he is one fun player to watch. Every single time the ball is in his hands you feel like he could take it to the house.

GD franchise has been breaking my heart since I was in Kindegarten - 49th season as a fan.

Ameer Abdullah looks even faster now than he did at Nebraska.

As for the Division, the outcome looks certain right now. That said, I remember a Rodgers collarbone injury, and a calf problem in years past which both had potential to completely derail the inevitable. There will almost certainly be plot twists and turns this year as well. I will be interested to read the ebb and flow of emotion when that occurs.

I just saw a video of a Viking fan getting kicked in the head while he was down after the 49er game last night. Disturbing.
That's a messed up scene. Drunk, mob mentality, whatever - somebody should be in jail. Hope the guy wearing the Rice jersey gets ID'ed. To be fair other 49er fans stepped in at the end to break it up. Looks like the Viking guy walked but that was pretty vicious.

Towards the end of the Silverdome era fights in the stands were a given. Every game - was not a family friendly environment. Team was pretty bad, guess it gave people something to cheer about. Glad they cleaned it up when they left Pontiac and headed back downtown.

I've never been to a game in Detroit. I've been to Chicago and to Minneapolis. Both had fairly accommodating fans. A few Bears fans were less than friendly, but the few did not define the many.

I found fans at Arrowhead to be very friendly and accommodating when I went to a game there. They took one look at our modest little Beer and Brat tailgating set up and invited us over to their space where they had a pig and a lamb on a smoker. They are proud of their tailgating spreads there and I was happy to let them share that pride. One guy in their group gave me a jersey and a hat to wear into the game. I agreed (he was such an amiable host) if he would wear a Packers jersey. He agreed to wear it in the parking lot but not to the game. He did say he would wear a cheesehead if I had one. I didn't. That's not how I roll.

Oh, the group in the next space over in K.C. had beef ribs, pork ribs, and brisket, and burnt ends. The two groups traded freely. It was quite the meat orgy.

I missed the early games. I would welcome recaps by homers, including perspective on prospects going forward after your win or loss, whichever the case may be.

Time for the Packers to start getting some reinforcements. Hopefully there were no serious injuries today, though it was clear Cobb did aggravate his shoulder injury. Maybe next week they can get Bulaga, Burnett, and Adams back on the field.

The Vikings will compete for a wild card spot, but they are at least a year away from making the Packers sweat.

The Lions are still the Lions and there is no threat. The same can be said for the Bears. There is no reason the Packers shouldn't at least have a bye in the playoffs.

I sure hope the keep their foot on the gas. Kind of excited for the Rams. I'm betting Rodgers nails them with a few hard counts. Matthews vs. Gurley is going to be fun to watch.

I keep wanting to doubt the Vikings but they are clearly improved. Bridgewater is a ways away yet, but there seems no denying he is on a good developmental arch. Peterson, he looks pedestrian right up until he rips off a big one, which he seems to have done each of the last three weeks, that's a pattern.

So, Cutler coming back so quickly from injury, and playing well while still hampered, brave, gutsy, the kind of effort that can rally a team and a City, or has Cutler burned his bridges so much that he can never ingratiate himself in Chicago?
