Racist boss - how would you handle it? (1 Viewer)

Invaded?

My boss is not only my boss, but the head and founder of the company. He is known to say questionable things now and then, and act in inappropriate ways towards women. He's an old codger.

I went to lunch yesterday with him and a co-worker. My coworker and I are white, middle-aged guys. Coming back to lunch we are discussing public transit. He says the following:

You know why we have buses don't you? It's so black people can get to work. Otherwise they'd be sitting at home on welfare or out robbing people.
How do you react?

Ignore him. He's obviously on his way out and not playing with a full deck. Nothing good would come out of you calling him on it.

You are dealing with the founder of the company. If it's a once in awhile type thing, you live it. If it happens all the time, you need to decide if it bothers you enough to look for a new job.

I'd call him a racist ####### and quit my job. Then I'd punch him in the face and write an angry review on Yelp!

In all seriousness, this is life - You'll deal with people that you have to deal with... This guy started your company, you now know who he is. You can keep working for him or you can find a new job, pretty simple way to handle this.

Blackmail. :moneybag:

No pun intended.

I would approach him about it. Do it as casually as you can, with no one around.

Once alone, I'd start the conversation like this....

Mr 11..... Is it OK if I call you Jim?

Say "Well that and so that the Irish can find menial labor as bus drivers". Substitute another ethnic group if your boss happens to be named Kevin Finn.

I think you should record him next time he says another racist joke and post it on youtube and start a trending twitter post and ruin this guys life over it because racism is pure evil. Dont worry about your job if you get fired people will donate to you on the internet and you will become a hero to everyone

I'm guessing the company doesn't have an HR resource or ombudsman. If they do, you can certainly make an anonymous complaint. If they don't and the company is smaller? It would appear you have a moral decision to make and can either sit quietly through his racist comments, say something to him about them or go find another job.

Does your company have any black employees?

Are they paid?

Are they paid fairly w white employees?

If so, drop it... He's old and racist. Oh well. Idiot, but oh well.

Actually no. Small/medium company and they are all white. Maybe one Asian. In my years here I can recall one black and one Indian employee.

I would have gotten in his face and called him a big liar. The nerve of him... suggesting that black people actually work.

What the ####. I'd be more upset that his joke wasn't funny. Tell him to step his game up ffs.
I dont think it was a joke. It sounds like was just trying to inform his employees of something.

If it was a joke, yeah, i would be offended by how bad his joke was.

You can tell a racist joke now and again and not be a racist person, but that sounded more like he was trying to explain something to them. Not good.

But what do you do??? Nothing.

The statement was ignorant and disgusting. And it should bother anyone.

But I also have a mixed race daughter and so immediately my mind went into protective dad mode. If it had been just me and him in the car I might have said something. But I held back. I was just stunned really.

I did look at job listings last night.

Next time tell him this one:

Why do cars have to stop whenever a school bus lets off passengers but not when a city/muni bus lets off passengers?

People riding on school busses have potential

Start hiding bus transfer tickets.

Yeah, that would have been my reaction too. Did your co-worker say anything?

Yeah, it wasn't a joke. Not that a joke would make it better.
Ok... so what do you want?

Him to apologize? So what? He'll still be a racist, even if he apologizes.

The old man is what he is, and he's stuck in his ways.
I don't want anything from him.I was mostly curious as to whether a comment like that in a situation like that would invoke a response from people. And maybe whether people would consider leaving a job in that situation.

There's nothing that can be done from a company standpoint. They are aware of him and are mostly just hoping not to get sued by a female employee before he retires.

What does gender have to do with this?

No he didn't. He is very quiet, non-confrontational, and super religious.
