The thread that will break the FFA.

Simple question. Which iconic genre transcending band is better?

This reminds me of the massive battle of the bands poll tournament I did here 5 or 6 years ago. Maybe it needs to come back minus the major favorites like the Beatles, Stones and LZ.

If Rush wins, I give up.
Vocals alone make this a no brainer, unless you have no brain (or at least no auditory nerve).
Thom has a habit of mumbling out his lyrics live, almost mocking himself, which can be way more irritating than Geddy. Although, Geddy has gotten pretty tough to listen to lately as he spends most of his time straining to reach notes he can barely approximate anymore. That's kind of a bummer, because they are playing as well as ever the last few tours.

This is a tough one. Pretty much anybody who grew up in the '80s in the suburbs playing a rock and roll instrument went through Rush. I mostly ignored Neil's lyrics and immersed myself in the arrangements and playing, which is still completely astonishing as frequently as not.

Playing - while Radiohead are better players than Floyd was, I give the nod to Rush here, even if I think Neil is the most overrated musician in the history of western music. What passes for swing with him doesn't really work for me. The latter portion of the 5/4 instrumental in the Trees is an example.

Lyrics - no contest.

Creativity - push. Both uniquely creative. Overflowing.

Vocals - neither.

Live experience - push. both exceptional, occasionally jaw on the floor good live.

Tough call. Could take awhile.

LOL Checkmate.. Love Both.

Yup.. I remember listening to Rush in 5th Grade on my way to school... Was already a huge fan... Then Moving Pictures hit and it was all over...

To me their Live Shows were and still are the Ultimate Rock and Roll concert - And I grew up with relatives in music seeing concerts since 8 years old to the likes of Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult Concert / Drama Rock shows.....

Rush was always THE concert experience - even after years of not digesting every new CD going to their show is just a reminder of what Rock and Roll concerts are all about....

I saw Radiohead once... Granted it was Radio City Music Hall - and the Music was fantastic - It just wasn't an ultimate Rock and Roll Concert experience... Almost Boring in comparison.

I also play some bass and Drums... Rush gives you arguably the Best Rock drummer of all time along with one of the best Bass players all time... Some even Put Lifeson way up the Guitar God list...

Also I originally thought it was Bush who would have made it a much easier vote

I think Sixteen Stone blows away Radioheads entire catalog

Anyway after giving it some thought I'll give a slight edge to Radiohead because if Creep or Karma Police come on the radio I don't immediately change it like I would with Tom Sawyer or that other Rush song (the one with the grating vocals).

Freewill?

OK tour, with Spiritualized opening? That would be one of my first stops in the time machine. I'd trade all my Rush shows in to have seen that.

Yes that one. Hopefully I can purge the awfulness from my head now

THEY DIDN"T PLAY CREEP!!!!!!!

RCMH sometimes makes concerts sterile..... There were families with kids around us... It was all sitting all the time... Ushers keeping everyone down ; )

Except when PHISH plays there - then all hell breaks loose.

Spiritualized playing LAGWAFIS at RCMH in 2010 was the best sounding show I've seen. Hard to describe how full and rich that was. But that guy is Phil Spector-like in getting sound when he puts his mind to it. I can see that room swallowing lesser acts.

IMO, Timing has a lot to do with the impression Music makes on your life... To me and my friends RUSH was THE band that introduced us to Concerts and Rock and Roll... In an age when you bought the Album and digested every single song and every picture.... Every other album seemed like a Live album loaded with pictures...

I can see a later generation having the same experience with Radiohead.... To me, Radiohead was/is Awesome but, by that time they became just another of hundreds of bands I loved and followed later in life...

RUSH will always remain one of the backbones of my Musical exploration..... Along with Stones, Zepp, Beatles... Then comes Floyd and RUSH.

my biggest issue with rush has always been their seeming need to always be doing something. the is rarely allowed to breathe. they're about the only ones guilty of this i can stand. so many great chops guys dont understand that you need to allow for the spaces between. thinking you need to fill every nook and cranny is a flawed strategy. it's the Favrau calling the the chicks answering machine of music. which is probably why so many great chops guys dont do so well with the desirable ladies. just because you know how to play the notes, doesn't mean that you know how to use them. the guys in rush do for the most part, but just wish the music was more breathable. all imo and such as of course.

I just never got the love of Rush. I compare them to Kiss, despite being horrible, they have a huge following. I dont get it

They took a much needed break when Peart experienced the tragic deaths of both his wife and daughter within a year. From the various documentaries that came out afterwards, that time off is what really seemed to re-ignite Neil and stay busy.

I was referring to the music.

Huh? While Rush is a players band, I think they do a good job of usually not sounding too busy as a band. Heck, look at longer tracks like By-Tor, The Camera Eye, Xanadu, etc., all of which have softer sections where the music breathes quite nicely in between the more rocking sections. Granted, when you compare them to most rock bands, they do sound busy, but I guess when you compare them to more modern proggy bands, they really don't.

Big fan of all those songs for that reason. In the end, as well. But you have to admit there isn't a lot that swings in the catalog.

Okay, I admit it, but I don't care. I don't listen to Rush for swing, and I never said I did.

Are you a real person or is this some music hipster shtick going on?

He's a musician dude can't you tell?.....

That's ok.

You don't need to get it. Enjoy what you enjoy. Us in the Clubhouse that Rush built will continue to adore our favorite band.

They are an acquired taste...not a mainstream act. And Radiohead is a perfect comparison of that. I really loved Radiohead through OK Computer then they went away from guitar driven music.....and it was over for me with them.

I remember seeing them open for REM and I was blown away. I walked out on REM midway through the show and the next day bought The Bends. To this day still an amazing rock album.

Rush......everyone knows me around here as one of the ultimate Rush fans. They are an iconic band in the progressive rock genre. I don't need to talk anymore about it.

R40 is rolling on. Going to see them in Tampa in 2 weeks (with my wife and son who are huge fans as well) and Vegas this July (with my bandmates for a guy's Vegas weekend)!!!

Great times.

plenty of non-musicians are familiar with the concept of swing, though this is probably not a hotbed for that kind of thing. super awareness of some junior fourth string OT of some DII school in New Mexico, but swing? tres hipster uppity blah blah blah.
